VA CCW VS UTAH OR OTHER STATES?
I, currently, have Non-Resident permit with VA. My buddies have with other state like Utah and etc.
If you are to have one Non-Resident permit, which would be the best (in terms of convenience and usages) for us living in CA? Are multiple permit recommendable? |

I think multiple permits are better. However, if you only going to get one, I would check the state/states that have reciprocity with your non-resident permit that you frequent the most.
For example, Utah gives you Washington, Arizona gives you New Mexico; get the permit that you would often visit. I used to have Oklahoma, Washington and Arizona prior to moving back to Commiefornia. Now I have CA, AZ, FL and will be adding Utah to cover WA since I travel there quite often for my work. I understand that it is costly but the reciprocity laws change quite often between states so my other permits would be honored if this was the case. My $.02 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Arizona and Utah are generally the most common. Both are accepted in 33 states (including the 2 constitutional carry states of NH and ME). Utah gets Washington and Arizona gets New Mexico. Both are about the same price to obtain/maintain. The downside with Utah is the training needs to be Utah specific and taught by a Utah certified instructor. This can make the initial process a little more than Arizona as many people already have the training requirements for Arizona met. However, both are 5 year renewals and Utah is cheaper to renew than Arizona. Florida is generally the next most common. It gets a few less states than Utah and Arizona, but will add Florida. Like Virginia (but unlike Arizona and Utah), the fingerprint cards must be obtained at a LE agency. The FL permit is a 7 (I believe) year permit and is $97. Most people already have the training requirement if they have prior formal firearms training. Virginia is good as you can complete the training online. However, the permit is expensive and not accepted in as many states as Utah and Arizona. I generally recommend getting Utah, Arizona, and Florida. Reciprocity and Recognition is subject to change without notice and it is always best to have extra reciprocity. Please note: I only touched on the mail in permits. There are several other permits like Nevada, Idaho, Washington, Texas, and Oregon where either the training must occur there and/or you must apply and/or pick-up in person.

It really depends on where you travel to. I go to OR, WA, AZ, FL and NV for work and play regularly....so I acquired my non-rez for each of those states.
My advice for greatest flexibility - take the NRA certified class from anywhere in NV, and that will qualify you for all the other states, but mainly NV where you have to take training in the county you apply for. I took a class in CA for my FL/AZ/UT, then retook one (with live fire) for NV. Good luck. |

Why? It is about reciprocity/recognition. For instance, Wyoming doesn't issue to non-residents at all, but accepts UT, AZ, etc (not CA). If I was planning a trip to Yellowstone, why not use a UT or AZ permit even if I did not plan on traveling to UT or AZ?

No problem. I am not sure where in LA you are located, but I am teaching a Utah class in Stanton on the 19th. The class can also be used for other states as well.

What makes you think that we do not travel to those spots? I have OR because I travel through there on my way to visit my relatives that live in ID. Same with WA. I have an enhanced ID because my son, brother and cousin live there, my wife and I own property there and will be ID residents later this year, when our new home there is finished. I also have NV and UT because we traveled through both states when my brother lived in CO. We also have friends and relatives that live in NV. So, contrary to you supposition, I have actually carried in every state that I have a permit in.

Can't speak for Texas but for the others on your list I either had to train and apply there (NV & ID) or apply there (WA & OR).

That is why I didn't touch on those ones. Texas requires the training be completed in Texas, but the rest can be done online and/or via mail.

My VA license will expire in a couple of years. I guess I will just not renew it and get the UT license at the expiring of VA. I don't see VA license having any advantage over UT. Or, am I missing something?

Since you currently have Virginia,
Getting Utah now would add 2 states (Washington state and Delaware) Getting Florida now would add 2 states as well (Florida and Delaware) Getting Arizona now would add 1 state (Delaware) You could also add just Delaware with a Maine permit

All of those except Maine covers Nevada Nothing covers Oregon except an Oregon permit. I personally have CA, UT, AZ, FL, and NH. I had VA and (accidently) let it expire.

I guess I will keep VA and apply for UT later and that will pretty much cover most of western states I visit frequently.
