Default CCW Renewal - Orange County

Hi folks,

My CCW permit is set to expire in April and I wanted to get set for my renewal. I've checked the PC Sherriff's website and it states that I need to take a 4-hour course.

I live in north county (La Habra to be exact) and am soliciting recommendations for a good instructor/class for my renewal.

Also, I had a question about changing the firearms on my permit. Currently I have three guns on my permit, but find that I almost never carry two of them. Do I need to qualify with the ones I don't want to continue to carry on my permit anymore? What about addition of a gun I did not have on my permit before? (All of my guns are California-legal, without modifications)

Thanks in advance!

Fast OC or AllSafe in Orange.

You can drop those two on your application and add the ones you want to qualify with.

I can vouch for All Safe. All Safe is located in Orange, but I believe its CCW renewal class is iat FT3 Tactical range in Stanton. I took its regular CCW class and it was top notch.

I’ve used FTA out at Rauhage’s in Corona … I like that the range is outdoors.

I also have a couple pistols on my permit that I rarely carry concealed, like my G17. Why? To give me the option to legally carry any of them loaded within my car and/or NOT in a locked container in the trunk while traveling on a trip without having to worry about navigating to avoid the whole 1,000 foot “school zone” restriction. OC doesn’t limit the number of guns on your permit … so its just involves the investment of addition time to qualify with it and a small extra fee with FTA.

I renewed before with Allsafe and it was a good experience, but my last renewal was at FTA as the schedule was better for me and I like the outdoor range. Both are good.

I use https://oconlineguncert.com/. The course is entirely online. You just watch the videos and then meet up at the range to do the shooting part (if necessary).

Side note, neither AllSafe nor FAST OC charge an extra fee for additional firearms, unlike some other trainers.

I'm also from La Habra. I like training with Greg Block. He's no nonsense and to-the-point. He works out of Insight in Artesia. It's a little longer drive, but worth it.

If you don't want to renew some of the guns, you just won't list them on your application. If you want new guns, just list them on your application. Whatever guns you list on your application are the guns you'll have to qualify with.

Since your current permit expires in April, you should file your renewal application soon... real soon.

Second Greg Block, zero fluff, in, out.

I thought they were still advising 90 days and getting it done faster?

I live in San Diego county and used the Permitium web site to renew my permit. I tried to upload my application 60 days before expiration and the web site advised me to submit my renewal application no more than 45 days prior to expiration. Not sure what the timing for renewal is for OC.

I would keep the other guns on my permit, just for the convenience of when you take them to the range, you just keep them loaded. And in the event that you need to send your EDC in for some work, etc., at least you have the others on the permit already.
Due to the workload OCSD CCW unit isn't able to accept amendments like adding a pistol onto a permit unless there are unique circumstances.
https://www.ocsheriff.gov/commands-d...ds/ccw-license

" In order to process the recent surge in new CCW applications, we will only consider amendments during the license term for the following reasons:

Change of address or legal name change
Lost or stolen license with a completion of a lost license form (download below under Related Files)
In the event a firearm malfunctions and is replaced by the manufacturer
In the event of a damaged/lost/stolen firearm, a different firearm may be added if that firearm is the only firearm listed on their license. Licensee will need to contact OCSD for approval at ccwpermits@ocsheriff.gov.

All other amendments will be processed at the time of application renewal. This is a temporary measure that will allow staff the opportunity to process the large volume of new applications in a timely manner. "

I did my NRA instructor class through T.J. Johnson, I think he's really good, he also does the CCW classes and has several more advanced courses as well.
T.J. Johnston
AllSafeDefense.com
His office / classroom is in Orange and he uses Orange County Indoor Shooting Range in Brea and FT3 in Stanton ranges.

I will always recommend Elite CCW in Fountain Valley (near the RifleGear). You can do it in person or online. They are currently building their own shooting range in-house so you can do qualifying right there.

I have used Artemis a few times over the years... for my initial permit and also for renewals.

Part of the renewal class is online via Zoom; part (qualifying shoot) is at Prado Tiro. Classes are typically split between Saturday (class portion) and Sunday (qualifying portion).

You can also do multi-state (AZ/UT/FL) with them if that is of interest.

OC is not accepting add-ons currently so if you don't include a firearm on the renewal, you cannot add it later.

I started the renewal about 115 days before my expiration, approx 30 days later I get an email request for additional info. The email states that if I don't get in the additional info and the training cert in 10 business days my application will be withdrawn. Hmmm... I'm still literally 3 months from my expiration, its the holidays, Greg Block seems to be on vacation. Oh well, it'll all work out I imagine.

I tried calling but their message basically says "hey were busy, send an email"

Edit: they didn't actually say "10 days" but from the receipt of their email to the deadline they listed, it's 10 business days.

Yep, they give you a deadline as to not hold pending applications (I’m guessing with the COVID rush, many people didn’t follow through).

Get the training done.

When I applied, I had my training done the week after I submitted the app and uploaded it soon after. I got approved about ~30 days from application as well (after a minor DROS hiccup).

Not sure why you waited on the training since it’s a renewal, and no GC is required.

I have been out of the state visiting family, just got back Christmas day and received their email two days later. Based on past experience, I didn't think they'd be moving this fast and i would have time early January to do the training.

I was surprised too. The OC thread said they’re about 30-40 days out for renewals compared to a year ago.

Hopefully you can schedule something in before their deadline. Not sure if they’d extend if asked (haven’t tried it).

Happy Holidays!

Made the deadline! Took the class today w Greg Block and uploaded the certificate. Met some new people while waiting in line, one was a calgunner although I didn't get his screen name.

Will update with turnaround time on license issue when I get it. I'm assuming they are mailing like last year or do we have to go in?

Edit
sent training cert 1/10
received email approval 1/11
paid via phone 1/11
CCW being sent via mail
Edit
CCW arrives 1/14 The start date on card is the expiration date of old card 3/26

My CCW expires this June 2023, and recall last year people saying it took 4-6 months to get their renewal and some people's expired before it was officially renewed.

Is this no longer the case? According to psssniper looks like it was super fast. I just checked the Sheriffs website and it says do NOT begin until 90-120 days out.

Apply in the 90-120 day window before it expires.

I just renewed recently and it was about a 30/40-day turnaround.

I recommend Artemis in Lake Forest. They do their live fire at Prado.

I usually use Artemis in Lake Forest for my renewals. I like the people there, have a good relationship with the owners too.

Thanks for posting this. Been wondering how long renewals in OC have been taking lately, post COVID.

From what I gather on your posts, it took about 45 days to receive your Permit.
