Default LAPD CCW INTERVIEWS

LAPD ARE RESUMING INTERVIEWS FOR CCW. YOU HAVE TO LIVE IN THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES THOUGH. THEY UPDATED THE WEBSITE AND ARE CALLING PEOPLE NOW.

Default LAPD CCW

That's great. On 9/28/22 insent my application to Hall of Justice with the $30 check after a Sheriff's deputy told me that they were supposed to discourage applications but that they would not reject them. I didn't expect LAPD to get on board with the Bruen decision anytime soon. Plus, seeing how Chief Moore doesn't seem to favor this decision very much, I kind of expected better results from the Sheriff's Department. I guess I'll find out when they cash that check...

If you do not mind, could you please share your timeline and how you submitted your application. I emailed and I was replied that I would be called as well for an appointment and would need to submit my application at the time of interview.

Thanks.

@uglyd,

Please let us know your timeline so the rest of us who applied can know what to expect.

How did you apply? Did you mail in the app or email to get on the list? If you emailed, did they respond to your email with the interview date or did they call you? I want to insure that any email response from the CCW unit doesn't go to a spam folder.

Thanks!

No application was submitted. I was called after sending an initial email only. An interview was setup then I was told to bring in the application and details around it.

Just received a call. My initial email had my contact info and I listed that I currently have CCW's for other states. Call was between 7-9am

Can anyone who has been to the interview share what questions were asked and their thoughts on the overall experience?

I called back in July and I was called back for an interview October 10th. I had my interview on October 24th. The questions that the detective asked me were yes or no questions. It’s an expanded list of the ones you answered on your ccw application. The whole interview lasted only about 10 minutes. I filled out my application on the computer and they just had me sign the three signatures. Hope that helps.

i emailed lapd sometime after the sheriff's cut-off in august to see if they had a procedure in place, but was given a cookie-cutter response of 'we're working on it'. i decided to just leave it be. fast-forward two months and i get a call from lapd asking if i recently inquired about their ccw process and if i was still interested. told them i was and they set me up for an interview sometime last week. went to the interview and it was super simple. all i have to do now is get my livescan done and wait. during the interview, i asked how long could i expect them to take to contact me after the livescan and was told 3 months. i'll post again if i hear from them sooner

Could you talk about the interview, what they asked you, what they didn't ask you, did they give advice, etc? Thanks

Congrats!

Did you do your livescan before the interview or after? I interviewed this week but did my livescan right after I got the call mid Oct. Was told to expect a letter in about a month

Thank you!! They gave me the live scan form at the end of my interview. I got mine done at my local ups. They definitely seem to have the process down once they contact you. My investigator told me they have 1500 backlogged applications and interviews are booked out to February. They are in the 400s of that 1500. She said that once I take my course to email her a scanned copy of the certificate and then around two weeks later they will have a group of people come in to get their license.

I'm guessing your livescan came back quick then. Seems like they're getting the process down pretty good, especially compared to LASD. I'm just itching to get that call already!

I'm kinda surprised only 1500 backlog in a city of 4 million. Either people simply don't know about it, or very few want to carry in the first place.

I imagine it's because everyone who wanted a CCW before August 2022 knew it was a lost cause going through LAPD pre-Bruen and instead went through the Sheriff. Since it was common knowledge LAPD would auto-reject during the pre-Bruen era, I assume everyone is still thinking the same, even post-Bruen.

That, and most people already submitted their apps with the Sheriff, which is why they're so swamped

As far as the interview questions, I can't really remember since it was so mundane but it literally is just a detailed extension of the application questions.

Keep answers short and simple, let them ask you for more info. Remember that anything public record and tickets/arrests are all available to them, but don't give more information than is necessary.

As far ask a mask goes my investigator and nobody else in the interview room had one on. But it may be at interviewers request. Yea it’s hard to believe that only 1500 people are trying to get their ccw.

Alright guys wish me luck today I sent an email to get put into the line for an interview for ccw as well. I am going to play it safe so I have 2 applications 1 where I had signed several pages and the next I will print out and fill everything out no signatures as I see in some cases this caused issues.

Also has anyone called the number lately, it says that they are seeing how to proceed.... has it always said that?

thanks again

12/14/2022 9:28 am - Request for CCW interview emailed
12/14/2022 8:29 pm - Received answer to email as follows

"Good evening,

You have been added to our CCW appointment list. Due to the high demand of CCW permits, it can take some time before you get a call back to set up your appointment for your interview. Thank you for your patience.

Respectfully,

The LAPD CCW Unit"

LAPD CCW TIMELINE (UNDER BRUEN STANDARD)"

6/23/22: Supreme Court Bruen Decision came out. Called LAPD for appointment. (mailed my LA County Sheriff's app same day; still have not heard a word of acknowledgment from LA Sheriff. Was seeing which agency was faster)

10/5/22: LAPD interview and submitted revised application (no good cause needed. I also had a speeding ticket that I took care of with traffic school in 2020 but the interviewer did not mention it; also I listed my 15 non resident CCWs, the interview saw it but did not say anything either). Interviewer said I was the First to interview under the new standard. Live scan submission same afternoon on way home I found a place that does it.

10/9/22: 8-hr training class completed (technically I should have waited until I was approved but took a risk to get it out of the way and get the CCW faster)

12/6/22: LAPD officer called me and said I was "approved" and now I can take the CCW course. I said I took it already. She said email me the certificate. I did.

12/15/22: Received a letter in the mail (signed by Chief Moore or probably someone else designated to sign for him) repeating the 12/6 phone call I got from the LAPD officer. I am approved based on (1) resident of LA (2) good moral character and now I need to fulfill (3) firearm training which I did already and on the 12/6 phone call provided the officer with the proof of training. The letter has the Captain of the Gang/Narcotics unit phone #, probably not direct but some station's #. So it's official and wow, never thought I'd see this day when I get an approval letter from the L.A.P.D. for CCW.

Here's the LAPD approval letter: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CnW...sF7qH-nCO/view

12/18/22: still waiting for a phone call to come in to pick up my CCW. The ball is in their court as I have fulfilled all requirments.

Picking up LAPD CCW in JANUARY 2023!!!

Received this email from LAPD 12/19/22 at 9:34AM after I inquired if I am squared away with training since I received a letter about doing training but when she called me on 12/6/22 she said she has the training proof needed:

"Good morning

Yes, the letter is a formal letter that is sent to all that are approved . You’re good as far as training. We will schedule a date and time in early January to pick up your CCW card.

Thank you"

I would advise applicants to carefully choose your CCW firearms to list since once it is on there it'll be a hassle to update until the next renewal since LAPD is so busy with CCW issuances.

I have 3 fairly flat firearms selected based on caliber and concealment to use in no particular order depending on circumstances but deliberately with forethought chose these 3 to list:

-Colt Combat Commander 45 ACP
-Kahr PM9 (9 mm)
-Kahr P380 (9mm short or .380)

So if I am gathering this correctly it sounds like the same day you interviewed you went and did the live scan and also got on about getting the training out of the way? I want to get a head start if you will and possibly get the live scan and training done. However I dont know how beneficial this may be.

I was the first to interview w/ LAPD under the new Bruen standard so they were still refining the process. At the interview they gave me a live scan form with LAPD info on it, so you have to wait for the interview for the live scan (+ the State is backed up so that may take some time too). As for training, at the interview they were not sure, the interviewer said take the training, then someone else there said wait until you get approved. So my interview was Wed, I took the training 8 hr training that weekend (Sunday); I chose not to do the 16 hr version since 8-16 is the standard. So if they rejected my training before I got approval, my defense was the interviewer said I could do it and being the first to interview, no one was sure. But when they called to approve me, she accepted my training before getting approval. But NOW, if you look at the LAPD website, they said wait for approval before proceeding to training. So in your case, to not have your training and live scan rejected, (1) do the interview (2) do live scan (3) wait for approval then do training. There is a well defined process now.

Then we shall follow the process no biggie, not their fault I lagged it on getting my process started!

Default GOT CALL FROM LAPD TO PICK UP CCW PERMIT

Got the call just now, 1/11/23 at 10:26AM from an Officer Garcia:

I did.

1/11/23: LAPD Officer Garcia called me and said if I can come in Jan 17 between 10am and 12pm to the police academy. To the left of the guard shack there are bungalows, go to classroom #3. Bring a CA Driver License ID and the $215 remaining payment via check.

I'll post a picture of my LAPD CCW when I have it.

By the way, I still haven't heard from LASD since mailing in my CCW application on same day when I applied to LAPD on 6/23/22.
