I started in 1990 and I have been issued four firearms in that span of time:
•1990- Smith and Wesson model 15 (bought it from department for $75 and still own it) •2007- SIG P226 .40 cal. (Allowed to keep it upon retirement from my first department in 2016) •2007- Colt AR15 (turned in upon retirement) •2007- Remington 700 .308 (turned in upon retirement) I have also deployed some personally owned weapons: •1990- Smith and Wesson 5906 (transitioned away from the model 15 just after academy graduation) •1996- SIG P229 9mm (transitioned away from the 5906 until I was issued the .40 P226) •2016- Springfield Marine Corps Operator 1911 (still deploying with this one with my second agency) *fun post and trip down memory lane

I was a Glock Armor in the 90's, did alot of the "upgrade" kits on the early guns back then, all my data shows the first batch of 23's came into the country in May 1990 and started with serial number NDxxx. Can you post the registry that showes you 23 is from 1988?
Not trying to bust your balls, but the .40 S&W cartridge was not even invented yet in 1988. It was first introduced in January of 1990 in the S&W 4006. Last edited by G-forceJunkie; 05-26-2022 at 8:59 PM.. |

In 1974, my first Department issued weapon was a Smith & Wesson Model 39. Loved that gun. Then some Department bean counter decided that we should advance backward to 4" Model 66's. Not a fan. The Department allowed personally purchased "Alternate Duty weapons". I promptly purchased a Colt Combat Commander .45 ACP. I carried that gun for six years. Then the bean counters changed to Sig P226 9mm and stopped the Alternate Duty weapon exclusion. I still have the Colt. To be honest the Sig was a great choice, and when it was upgraded to .40 S&W it was even better. Carried that Sig until I retired in 2004.
I still liked the S&W 39 best. In fact, I have two. Plus, I have two Model 59's. The Department has recently switched to the Sig P365 in 9mm. |

Yes the wonderful model 39! I own a 39-2 from 1974 the year you were issued one, and I love mine too! As much as I love the model 66, I will agree from a law enforcement standpoint that it was a step backwards. The 39 was a great reliable pistol, plus it had an 8 round capacity, so not sure why your Department went that route.

LAPD: I joined in 1990 and was issued a Beretta 92F and we had to purchase a S&W 649 as backup. I was never a fan of the 92F and later transitioned to a S&W 4563TSW and used that for many years. Years later as 9mm rounds got more advanced, I switched over to a S&W 5903 and currently carry an M&P 2.0 chambered in 9mm. Over the years, I transitioned amongst many backup weapons, from the S&W 649, S&W 4513TSW and now an M&P Shield 9mm.
My private purchased rifle is a Colt LE6940 and shotgun is a Benelli M4. Just lugging that damn Benelli on patrol is starting to take a toll on my back! Counting the days till I can install a license frame labelled KMA-367. On second thought not a good idea in today's environment so I will just lay low and travel the world unless my back prevents me from doing so. |

I was enamored with the wondernines long before the academy. I used to read the articles by Evan Marshall from Detroit PD and he was big on the Sig P226. If the P226 design hadn’t been so anti-lefty designed, I would have probably rocked one of those. At least the 320 is southpaw friendly.

I’m boring.
First a Gen 2 Glock 22. Then a Gen 3 G22. Now a G5 G17 Colt rifles. Remington 870’s. Told ya, boring. As far as backups, started with a Ruger SP101 (it’s what I had at the time), then a Kahr CM9, S&W 442, and finally settled on a High Standard 22 mag derringer. |

Finding an LAPD marked revolver is going to be an extremely difficult find to be honest with you. You can try auction websites such as Gunbroker, but the only way you can legally aquire these revolvers as they are Off-Roster, is for them to be on Consignment or Curio and Relic status which is 50 years or older. Also check out Lock, Stock, and Barrel Auctions in Simi Valley, they acquire alot of law enforcement trade-in stuff, you may be lucky and find one. Good luck to you in your search.

Model 66-1. Used it in the academy because I had to. Went to the jail and purchased and carried my own Colt Python for 15 years. The department then went to semi-autos and issued Glocks. I then purchased and carried a Sig Sauer P220. They eventually stopped issuing the Ranger .45acp+p ammo because the Glock 21s could not handle the pressures and started issuing standard velocity Ranger .45acp. That ammo wasn't working very well so I transitioned to a Sig Sauer P226 because they were still issuing the Ranger 9mm 127gr+p+ ammo. Carried that until I retired.

Started in 1998, issued Beretta 96D Brigadeer .40 S&W. I had three guns break because of the hot round issued, so I purchased a Sig P229 DAO .40 S&W and carried that gun until I switched agencies in 2002, where I was issued a Glock 19 Gen 3 with NY Trigger, S&W Model 60 as a backup, and a Steyr AUG as my issued rifle. In 2004 our firearms policy changed and I was able to purchase my own Glock 26 Gen 3 that I still carry today.
In 2008, my agency took away our Glock 19’s and issued us Sig P229 DAK’s in .40 S&W. I despised the DAK trigger, and in 2012 my agency changed policy again, and allowed us to buy Glock 17’s Gen 4, but the gun was way too big for plain clothes. In 2015 my agency finally allowed us to carry Glock 19’s again, and have been carrying the same Glock 19 Gen 4 POW since. In 2018 we again transitioned to different firearms, Sig P320 Carry Models in 9mm. I stayed with Glock 19, and recently purchased a Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS after it was finally approved for duty use. Got a free RDS from a friend, so will transition to Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS after I take the transition course soon. I will also retire the Glock 26 Gen 3 for a Gen 5 model. For all my duty guns, the Glock 19 paired with 26 have been the perfect one-two combo. The guns just run like Honda; boring guns and nothing special about them, but they just work. I own a lot of different guns, and if allowed, I would carry either a HK P-30 or VP-9 optics ready, but the Glock will do until retirement |

I joined LASD in 1960. We purchased our own weapons using the Departments guidance. I used a S&W Combat Masterpiece 6" Revolver, and carried it throughout my career. CALOSHA forced all agencies to issue "Safety Equipment which included firearms. In 1974 I was issued a S&W model 14(?) .38 special which I never fired. It was marked on the frame with a serial number prefaced by LASD XXXX. S&W had already placed their numbers on the Butt and frame. I retired in 1989 and was allowed to purchase the one that was issued. I subsequently gave that one to my oldest son. I gave the other .38 to my oldest daughter. I presently carry a S&W 39-2 which is always within arms reach. I'll be 87 in a month or so. and qualify annually for HR 218 but maybe I will not next year.

So sounds like you carried a 6" Smith model 19 and were later issued a Smith model 15, which was .38 special and a 4" barrel. The Smith model 14 was a .38 special with a 6" barrel only, it was called the "Target Masterpiece". |

1986: Issued a Smith & Wesson model 67
1990: Dept change the issue firearm and issued a Beretta 92FS 2013: Dept changed the firearm again and issued a Smith & Wesson M&P9 (1st version) Everytime they changed the issue firearm, we were allowed to purchase the issued handguns. And, when I retired, I was allowed to purchase the issued M&P9. Toward the end of my career, the dept switched the shotgun from Ithaca to Remington 870. We were on the lottery, and I was lucky to buy an Ithaca modle 37. Now, I have all 3 handguns that I was issued and an Ithaca shotgun that I used in the department. I like it. |

It is 6" only. Standard Sq Butt Grips. And a target type Sq frnt sight. ![]() Last edited by pacrat; 06-13-2022 at 12:59 AM.. |

![]() The 14 has standard "square butt" grips. And a flat backed, patridge type front target sight. Watch an old "ADAM 12" rerun. Both guys carry 6" Md-14s. Lots of guys didn't like the Md-14 target frnt sight. Because the square top gouged into their holsters. Making for very jerky awkward draw. |

This is a S&W M15-2 that was carried by a L.A. County Deputy Sheriff in the 1960s. The grip was shaved so speed loaders can be easily used. It also had the T-grip (this one is made by Pachmayr)

First gun issued was a S&W Model 66 4"bbl 38/357
Second gun was a Beretta 96D 40S&W Third gun was S&W Model 66 4" bbl 38/357 Fourth gun was a S&W 4046 40S&W Fifth gun was a Sig P229 40S&W Sixth gun was a Sig P228 9mm Seventh gun S&W M&P 45 45acp. All the changes in the guns were from just 3 Federal Agencies. Some were changed because of wear on the guns and one was changed because of a flaw in the metallurgy of the gun. The seventh gun is getting worn but the agency doesn't want to spend the money to get newer guns so they are having them refurbished as they wear out. |

1982 Issued a S&W model 66 4". Turned that in and carried my personal 586, until we transitioned to autoloaders at our expense in 1991. I initially carried a Styer GB, until we switched to sub-sonic ammo, that the GB didn't care for at all. Switched to a Sig P226 until we were finally issued H&K USP's in .45 in 1997. Carried that until I went to a UC assignment and switched to my personally owned Sig P220. Carried that until I went out on an injury.
Still have the 586, P226, and P220, wish I never sold the GB, but mags were hard to find, and really really expensive. |
