I am probably out of date in my knowledge of what is currently popular in 9mm, so I am curious of the guys that carry 9mm what is the approved ammo in your department or is there more than only one option?
Do you have a different choice of 9mm ammo for your personal guns when off duty? Any pros and cons and personal experience as to what ammo you trust or don’t like would be appreciated. Thanks.

Current state contract that many agencies buy off of (usually better price than they can get on their own) is for either 124 gr HST +P, or 147 gr HST. There are also contracts for Speer FMJ, and frangible rounds, but I don't think anyone will be using those for duty, then again stranger things have happened, when the bean counters get involved.
It takes some digging but the contracts can be found at the Ca general services website. |

Federal HST 147gr
The Ranger T has mostly gone away here due to logistical issues and Winchester apparently going to agency sales only (dept only issues a few mags worth, so you're on the hook for the rest) |

Issues 147 gr HST, but also authorizes 147gr Ranger T’s.

Speer Gold Dot G2 147gr JHP or Federal HST 147gr for on-duty and qualifications.
Speer or Winchester 124gr FMJ for training. What blows my mind, is agencies that send thier guys to training with a thousand rounds of this ammo instead of cheaper FMJs. |

I thought that too, until the range master explained that it was better to practice with the same ammunition you carry in your duty gun. Fewer surprises, and if you're involved in a shooting, the department can testify in the future lawsuit from said event, that you were trained with the same weapon and the exact ammunition used in the shooting. My department doesn't permit firearm modifications, or the use of any ammunition not issued by the department. Makes sense from a legal and training standpoint.

I issue RA9T Winchester Ranger-T 147gr JHP for both on duty and off duty, even with a personally owned off duty weapon, only the issued ammo. No other round authorized.
Like a lot of other agencies, we are satisfied with that round. It performs good in short subcompact barrels, full length duty barrels and the longer MP5 barrels We qualify 4 times a year. 3 of those quals are in the underground range, so it's leadfree training ammo (expensive). 1 qual is at the outdoor range, so it's actual duty ammo used for that qual. If I send an officer to a class or a recruit to the academy, I send them with inexpensive ball ammo, usually Winchester 124gr FMJ. We are one of the few agencies that qual every quarter. I find it strange and almost offensive that a handful of cops complain about shooting too much. I just shake mu head in disgust The only mods authorized on our weapons are sights or grips and even those need to be approved by a dept armorer or the Range Master. |

I forgot to mention the other “issued” rounds for other approved calibers within my agency :
.45ACP: 230gr HST but also approved Ranger-T 230gr. .38spl: Gold dot 135gr +P .380: 99gr HST 12Ga. Federal 00Buck and Federal 1oz slug, both in 2 3/4” shells. 5.56/.223 ….was Federal 55gr SP for the longest time, now I think they switched to the HP. I haven’t carried an M4 in a long while since my latest assignment, so I’m not exactly sure on what’s issued these day for the line-swine.

147 HST Standard Pressure for those opting to carry 9mm.
Prior to ~1 year ago, it was up to the officer to supply their own defensive ammo if they were carrying 9mm (we're issued glock 22's with 180 HST).

I'm not LEO... At a few Classes LEO and anyone with JHP were told to train with FMJ.... Should an ND occur, its an easier recovery... less tissue damage with ball over JHP

I am not LE but I write for Police1. Many agencies use 147 gr JHP for its stopping power over lower weights and they train with it for two reasons —
1. Different bullet weight/powder combos have different POI. 2. If a gun or mag has issues with duty ammo, it’s better to learn about it on the range. Last edited by ronlglock; 09-26-2022 at 8:10 PM.. |

Yes, it would be less expensive; but, for us, the issue is ensuring that the FMJ never accidentally makes into a weapon for duty use. At our academy location, they can use FMJ because none of them are going off the lot with those weapons. For everyone else, we have JHP for all quals and duty use. The agency doesn't want anyone to accidentally grab a box of FMJ from the armory when they meant to grab JHP. Therefore, they only buy fancy.
