I use bells around the campsite tied to strings for security at night, but I think I'm going to get this.

i have some motion sensor closet lights that run on rechargeable batteries for 2-3 mos. while the lights may not wake anyone, i'd surely scare any animals or intruders. they are great for closets, car trunks, bathrooms, stairs and hallways too.

If you’re out in the “sticks,” there ain’t no LE that’s ever going to hear those alarms, nor are they going to be rolling in your camp at 0300hrs just randomly. You have better odds at winning the power-ball than ever seeing a ranger in a park at oh-dark thirty.

If you’re in a “park,” there’s no need to even have these alarms, as you’re “butts to nuts” against people everywhere.

Battery powered driveway motion detectors. Properly placed, they last a long time (if you're there longer than they last on batteries you aren't camping, you are living there).

There are some really good ones with very long range, setup at different distances you'll know if someone is headed in your direction or just some animal big enough to trip it is rumaging around.

The alarm is at your location so you can tone it down so it's nearly silent but can be heard by you. They pack easily, are weatherproof and they work.

The preferred way though, is a ditch covered with netting and leaves.

too much work to set up a trip wire trap just to scare someone. Better if you camp a lot to get a good dog companion, some motion sensor lights and a reliable gun.

OMG...ROTF!!! That said, I have been places where cartels have groups of people traveling through near the southern border. I don't worry too much about animals entering my camp but unwanted bipeds can be a concern. But I created a very simply solution should I feel the need for a perimeter alarm.

You've seen those small, very loud, portable alarms that go off if moved right? They run on a single AA battery, no WIFI, just old school analog tech.
I used to place em on my pricey Christmas decorations to deter theft or kids placing my deer in compromising sexual positions on my lawn. They are tiny, weigh nothing, you push a button to set it and have 30 seconds to position it. Once disturbed it blasts a high pitch, ear-piercing sound that is upsetting. I run a length of 2lb fishing line around my camp (about a foot off the ground) before turning in for the night and attach one of these alarms to it. If anything disturbs the line, the motion sensor alarm goes off. Hasn't been triggered yet but in areas where you may sleep better knowing your perimeter has an early warning device...this works better than lights. It'll send 2 & 4 legged critters running in the opposite direction.

Ha, I went camping with a buddy of mine right after graduating high school. It was an official campground so there were a few people milling about. There was a friendly sort that stopped and talked a couple minutes, and seemed to eye our stuff. Of course I had my dad's revolver with me.

I brought a tent but my buddy was the rugged type that makes a bed out of pine needles so he could sleep outside. It was a pretty dark night and I imagine that seeing my tent would make people think everyone was inside. My buddy was in his bag about 30 feet away. Sure enough, not long after we turned in there was a little noise outside. My buddy surprised him and he had some lame excuse about being lost. At the least the guy planned to walk off with some of our stuff I'm certain.

this stuff costs about 1/3 of this when you buy like 10pcs of each "ala carte" vs kit.

same looking will say 12v and I'd guess 9v will work just fine.

DIY wiring and contact by drilling hole for 1/8" nut and bolt through clothes pin to make contacts, then put piece of sheet plastic with hole to tie fishing line to insulate until line is pulled. Brass hardware is best and if you want extra quality you can file the heads flat a bit.

But seriously, these are compact, cheap and effective enough to make some for all your family and friends, for use in all sorts of places, like inside your car's driver's foot well or doors, or hotel room doors, or your luggage or bicycle. At a total unit cost of about $3 you can deploy them and not care if you retrieve them and/or don't admit they are yours.

you can tie the pins to tree etc, but for urban parking lot security around vehicles I bolt the pins to big plastic coffee can lid underneath and hack nasty looking hole to run string out, and put some rocks in the can so it will stay put on pavement and looks like random trash. Coffee can housing makes it all weather. I've deployed these and they remained operational for months in rainy season until triggered by landscaper.

Some say "trip wires" are legally problematic because god forbid some burglar claims he tripped and skinned his knee. I suggest hooking the PULL wire to another object that the intruder will be sure to move on his way in or some "prize" he will grab first.


Driveway alarms can also be good for campsite type security but will be triggered by cats or similar size animals, movement and wind on bushes, and in my experience they will work perfect during testing, but will sometimes go to "sleep" and not work, but then will start to work perfect after you wake them up and try to test them.

A good, smart dog of some size (or two) is the best alarm possible---24 hours active alarm not fooled like motion sensors that are set-off by wind or trip wires set-off by local critters...

I've seen some suburban dogs out cold at night on camping trips because they've being going full blast for hours on end in the great outdoors.

I've used motion sensors and trip wires for suburban security and cats and deer will set off Drive Way Alarms but I've never had a critter trip a wire and my wires are only about 8" off the ground. No reason at camp you couldn't set wires higher in the dark among brush. I'm thinking harmless critters like deer will avoid a camp, and anything that wont avoid your camp you like to know about.

I put my kids on 2 hour fire watch. Very effective.
