Chabot is one of the first ranges I visited in California.
I remember the Shoot 'n 'Cues. Great time to hang out with friends. Being the sentimental sort I took some photos and video shortly before Chabot closed. An odd mix of happy memories and angst over the fact of closure whenever I look at them. I wonder if anyone has been by in recent times. Is the old range building still standing?

I was also sad to see it go. It was the first range I visited when I moved here in 1983. I saw a flyer at the old San Francisco Gun Exchange for it and asked about that range called "Cabot", as in Henry "Cabot" Lodge. They laughed at my pronunciation, as did I. I shot PPC and silhouette there in the 80s, PPC, tact handgun, tact rifle and 3-gun there in the closing years. Brought my son there for his first time at the rifle range. At least they can't take away the fond memories.

Ranges wouldn't be closing if CA was Shall Issue or if SFBA counties accepted SD = GC. There would have been a TON of CCWers practicing on both the square ranges and in PPC, IPSC-USPSA, and IDPA, like I used to before focusing on 2nd A activism to increase CCWs.
Too bad most CGNers refuse to organize to influence sheriffs and especially sheriffs' election campaigns. Other than San Joaquin, Merced, and San Diego folk (and mostly folks NOT posting regularly on CGN), most CGNers are AWOL.... ![]()

Lease was up for renewal. Official reason was that they were afraid of a lawsuit over lead despite the fact that the range presented lead mitigation measures.
In reality, a few people within the Park system started a campaign against the range a year before the lease was set to be renewed - using noise as the issue. Despite a huge outpouring of support, the park board members basically went full Pontius Pilate and washed their hands of the situation. It was all rather disgusting...to the point where much of what goes on in the Bay is mired in corruption at the end of the day.

I think the liberal zombies using the areas around the range were outraged by the sounds of small arms fire, whereas, those same sounds provide me great comfort. The lead thing was just the way to get Chabot closed.
Missed but not forgotten. I'll never forget holding a nicely accurate lightweight 308 with matched ACOG and having to cease fire because deer were crossing the range. Or all the times we went into cease fire because of the damn turkeys. Or the time my dog barked from the truck for the whole three hours I was there because he wanted in on the action. Or the sound of my rifles' bark echoing around the horseshoe-shaped area, it always sounded great. RIP Chabot you were good to me. |
