Default CaPRC Marksmanship Clinic "A" - March 22, 2015

Come on out and join us at Angeles for our new precision rifle shooter orientation on Sunday March 22nd.

We will teach how to get behind the gun/scope, attaining proper eye relief, using the features of the scope and natural point of aim.
Then we will check your zero at 100yds and get the knobs set to zero and work on the basics of marksmanship.
The course curriculum was written by a former USMC scout sniper instructor.
This is a beginning precision rifle shooter clinic so we will concentrate on basic marksmanship as it is the basis of all future learning.
This will be shot at 100yds.
Fees are $75 for non members or $50 for club members.
The entry fee covers the classroom session, cold drinks and BBQ lunch.
We will limit this to 24 shooters.
Plan on a full day as the schedule has us shooting until at least 4pm.
You may attend the classroom portion as a non-shooter and then observe the shooting portion of the day for a reduced $25 non-shooter fee.

Tentative schedule as follows:
8:30 Sign-in at hunters education classroom
9:00 Classroom session at hunters education clasroom
11:45 move to the rifle line and safety briefing
12:00 verify, correct and zero knobs at 100yds (10 rds)
12:30 BBQ lunch break
1:00 open shooting time with instruction

Some things to bring:
Precision bolt-action rifle wearing a scope with target knobs, eye/ear protection, sunscreen, chamber flag, 80 rounds of match quality ammo, shooting mat or blanket, bipod, some kind of rear bag or sand sock, small notepad and a pencil or pen to take notes.
Bring what you have, don't worry too much about what you don't have.
We always make do with what we have.

This is a Precision Rifle event so if the gun/scope/ammo is not capable of shooting tight groups, it will detract from your overall experience at the shoot.
If possible, please have your rifle zeroed at 100yds and your knobs set to zero.
We will verify a correct zero at the shoot, but it takes time that is better spent putting rounds on targets.

RSVPs for the Clinic "A" will not open until March. We are posting the notice now so that interested persons can mark their calendars. At the appropriate time, you can RSVP here:

I did this course as well as B and maybe C about 3 - 4 years ago and am trying to get back into precision shooting. Does the A course include shooting using a sling? I always get tangled up in mine and struggle with that.

Clinic A is fundementals, breathing, trigger control etc... all at 100yds from a bipod and rear bag.
Clinic B is 100 to 600yds, spotter/shooter and using a ballistic calculator, all bipod and rear bag.
Clinic C is slings, positional and improvised positions behind props.
Clinic D is 800, 900 and 1000yds, prone and rear bag.

Does it have to be a bolt action? I have an AR .308 with a 20" barrel that I consider a precision rifle.

Yes.
We have let semi-autos do this in the past and we run into a few problems.
First, the semi-autos rain brass down on the other shooters.
Second, the semi-autos are never as accurate as the bolt guns.

We have limited room in the clinics and too many people trying to get into them.
It's only fair to reserve those spaces for people committed to the most precise guns, which are all bolt actions.

I am excited for this class. I just shot my new bolt gun for the first time today. I know I have a lot to learn, but after shooting today I realized just how much learning there is to do. I am already going to be in Anaheim on business that week, so it's a no brainer to extend one day for the training on Saturday. Great stuff.

Also looking at your link it seems you state every person must be an NRA member. Is this true?

There is probably no cell reception at the range so I'm guessing this won't work for you.

We are a 100% NRA club.
This is for insurance reasons.
If you want to join the CAPRC club, you would need proof of current NRA membership with your application.

No problem.
You just won't be able to join the club.
You don't have to be a club member to attend our shoots.
Club membership just gets you reduced entry fees and priority registration.

It is possible that the clinics will fill up with club members alone so that's the chance you take by not being a club member.

No problem... I just wont support the NRA now until they fight for the rights in CA. That had no problem taking out money in the past, but left us hanging with things got bad here. I support other gun right organizations now

We got around 25 new members to our club this year and the the new members generally are signing up to get priority clinic registration.
There is a good chance that the A clinic will get filled by CAPRC members before the public registration opens.

Randall:

Any chance of a second A clinic if (new) members are left out of this one or is there no guarantee joining, at this juncture, gets you in?

There are almost always last-minute cancellations.
We will do our best to make sure that all club members get to shoot the clinics.

RSVPs for non-members will open at noon this Thursday (03/12/15).

If you're planning to attend the Clinic "A", mark your calendar so that you can get your RSVP in.

I just missed this class. How many times a year do you have the clinic "A"? Would I be able to get into clinic "B" without taking A if I had formal training in the past?

Anyways, application is in the mail. Looking forward to meeting everyone and having some fun!

We do one set of clinics a year.
Clinic A is a prerequisite for the other 3 clinics.

Sounds good.....I'll take my chances at a local match. I figure the best way to improve and learn is to jump in with both feet. Is there a prerequisite for participating aside from the membership which is in process?

Nope.
Membership is not even needed to shoot the matches.
Membership just saves for $20 off each month's match fees.

I hate that I keep missing these.

Do you have a rough estimate of when the next Clinic "A" would be?
