Tikka T3 in 243, 270 or 308win. All those cartridges will do the job.

I have a Savage Model 10 in .223 Rem. Came with a Nikon 3x9 scope already mounted. I get 1-1/2" 5-shot groups at 100 yards. Other calibers: 22-250 Rem, .243 Win, .308 Win.

I think Savage rifles are a great value for the cost. Worth a look.

There's one in the marketplace right now for$400; it's a 308.

Go to one of the bigger shops (Sportsman’s, Bass Pro, Turners, etc.) who have a wide selection, and shoulder a few to find what YOU like. Many well made rifles to choose from in that price range.

I would agree, and open this up to a Tikka T3 whatever in any .308 or .30-06 class cartridge.

7mm-08 being the obvious best choice

I agree on the Tikka. Very good rifle and action for the price. Unless you are meaningfully recoil adverse, I would go 30-06 as you have off the shelf rounds available for a wide range of animals.

Mosin Nagant, stock iron sights, original wood. Use the money saved and buy good boots & binoculars.

This is very good advice, choose a light fixture or object on the ceiling and point the rifle quickly on that target w/o using the sights.

A rifle that gets on the target would be the best choice all other elements being equal.

A while ago I bought an Arisaka type 99 for about $200. If I was still hunting deer, that would be my choice for a bolt rifle. Love those sights!

Ruger American, Mossberg Predator, Savage in 308win or 30-06 or 7-08 will do the job well. Be sure to put a Leupold scope on it. 3X9X40 or 3.5X10X40 with duplex reticle sighted in 2.75" high at 100 yards and hold on the animal for meat in the freezer.
These are less costly and very accurate rifles. I have them and other expensive rifles. They all do the same thing. I do have a couple of Tikka T-3 Lite rifles and really like them but they do cost more than the ones I stated. Also have other Ruger, Rem, Savage, Weatherby and custom rifles to compare them to.

Savage Axis with mounted scope, well within your budget. Buy it, clean it, go sight it in, ready for hunt.

Any decent gun store will have an entire rack of used hunting rifles, many with optics and all with low round counts. I'd recommend .243 or .260 (6.5mm), although you can't go wrong with .270, 7mm or 30/30. .308/30-06 is more than you need IMO.

I can be a rifle snob myself at times but you don't need a pre-64 model 70 for a first hunting rifle.

Personally, I'd rather have a G series model 70 with the bolt guide and better gas handling capabilities.

It’s the cool thing to say. A pre-64 model 70 is not a first time hunters rifle. It’s basically a collectors rifle at this point.

For the price one would pay for a pre-64 model 70 in solid condition, they could buy brand new (and lighter) rifle with plenty of money left over for a good optic and a sling.

faris, what ever you end up with if it is in one of the more common calibers such as the 30-06, .308 Win, .270 and such the ammo will be reasonable priced. Even the all copper stuff in the common calibers should be cheaper than others. Watch for sales when you find the load your rifle shoots well and buy then, a good deal is always just that, a good deal. If you weren't in Calif. I would recommend a Remington 700 from Wall Mart in most any caliber. They sell here for 379.00 + tax and are just fine for a starter rifle but Wally World doesn't sell guns there anymore.

Due to the fact that Model 70s had CRF and 3 position safety those go for premium ($900+) for those looking to use the actions for custom guns.

Sportsman’s Warehouse has some good deals. Go to the store and see what feels good. .243 is a good cartridge for deer and coyotes. Then search online (they have sales all the time) and have it shipped to the store closest to you.

https://www.sportsmans.com/shooting-...rifle/p/p52615

Get a vortex diamondback 3x9 scope with rings and have the shop mount it.

Get a good pair of binoculars and boots.

Ruger American
All are great accurate rifles at very good prices Big 5, Bass Pro and Sportsmen's Warehouse all have these and usually they're on sale, well within your budget.

I suggested the Tikka because I own one. The stock is fine for a plastic stock and the bolt is smooth. I don't own any of the other 'entry' rifles. I did handle a Ruger American once and wasn't impressed, the tupperware was really 'tupperwareish' though I hear they shoot great. I wouldn't turn one down if someone handed one to me, that's for sure. However, and I can't believe no one else has mentioned this, the one Remington 783 I played with in .30-06 seemed like a fine rifle for $300.00 bucks. If I needed an inexpensive rifle right now, I wouldn't feel bad walking into Big 5 and buying a 783.

Savage Axis in 308 will get the job done. Nothing more accurate than a Savage for the money.

Keep in mind that if you are hunting in Ca. you must use non lead bullets. This can be a problem if you wander to far from the more popular calibers and you don't reload.

.243, .270, 30.06, .308, 7mm, 7mm/.08, should be easy to find. . 25/06 great caliber but not as common. I believe there are nonlead bullets for a lot of the 6mm and 6.5mm. as well.

If you're in the central valley than most deer you may encounter are 2 pointers at most but maybe once in a blue moon you can bump into a 3 pointer. However they are to smart for most hunter, 6.5 creek, 243, 7-08, 308, to 270, & 30-06 would do the job. Anything else bigger like 7mm mag and up are over kill for them 2 pointers that's why I went back to a standard 308. But if you're hunting bear too than it's ok to upsize to a bigger caliber.

This. I shoot everything with a .308, simple old green and yellow 150g Core Lokt ammo. Every single store that sells ammo has .308 and when you get out of state places like corner markets sell it. Ruger American, Remington 700 ADL, Howa 1500, Savage... none of it matters in the least bit. All in the budget. Every single animal you shoot though the lungs with it will do a nose dive about 20 feet from where it's shot if you hit it right.

If you are an adult male you buy your hunting rifle in .270, .308. or .30-06, and if you never want to buy another hunting rifle you'll never need to.

Sportsmans warehouse has the TC compass on sale now $230
Howa are usually on sale for around $400
Certainn Winchester and browning rifles are in the $400
Sportsmans has quite a few Nikon's on sale right now also.

TC compass in 7-08 and a 4-12x40 Nikon should be had for a little over $400

Mauser action rifles can be found cheap in the used market . Look for one in 270 or 30-06

Hahaha well to be fair I only own 2 out of 3! My point was just that all three are ubiquitous choices for anyone not recoil sensitive and not looking to reload etc... You can buy any one of the three and be good to go. The phrasing of my prior post is a little off, as if those are your only choices if you are in fact a full grown man.
