S&W revolvers on roster - "-A" model number?
I am interested in buying a 629 with the 5" barrel. On the roster, this is listed as model 163636A (see https://www.oag.ca.gov/firearms/hand...ic-sku-163636a). The roster also says that "Smith & Wesson revolvers currently on the roster with the letter ‘A’ after the product code, will be engraved with the letter ‘A’ on the underside of the top strap of the revolver."
But online I cannot find model 163636A for sale; it seems everyone is selling 163636 (without the A). The S&W website only lists 163636, and lists it under CA compliant. So are all the 163636 CA compliant and have that "A" under the top strap? Or am I going to run into trouble if I try to transfer in a model 163636? Thanks in advance! Gary |

Maybe call/e-mail the online seller to determine if it is a roster approved model?
Not sure were you are, but I assume you have called local shops in your area to see if they have it in stock or can order one for you? Last edited by DEPUTYBILL; 10-04-2019 at 3:40 PM.. |

Just went through this. Bought a “California legal” 617 off of an out of state gun shop, had an A marked on the box, but the A wasn’t on the gun. Ca Doj said no. Had to get a refund from the shop and reorder the gun locally. Same gun. Just with an A this time.

If your FFL is willing they can convert a non-A stamped revolver to single action for the DROS then you can convert it back. You just need to remove the DA dog from the hammer.
If they wont convert it for you, have the revolver sent to Audiophil in AZ and he will do it then ship it on to your FFL and it will be DROSd as a single action, roster exempt revolver. |
