UMD, I think you are taking a risk to your health if you are up there cleaning up broken glass, sharp, shredded metal and plastic, wire and splintered wood in shorts, tennis shoes or flip flops and a t-shirt. But hey, it's your body and you are signing a liability waiver for the Forest Service so come on out anyway.

Bet you could stop by a thrift store today and get what you need for $10.00 to $15.00, but it's up to you.

It's just not something that even occurred to me. I have hiking shoes I was going to wear but nothing I would call boots. I'll see what I can dig up after work today.

Every time I go shooting up there, to put out my steel targets, I have to traverse "no mans land" to put my targets up on the hill at 100 and 150 yards. I wore tennis shoes once, the sole of the shoe ended up with a big gash in it. Now I only wear heavy duty boots at the GF, there is so much sharp stuff out there, it's not even funny.

Sometimes. For me, not usually at the range but at the road, or just on the other side of the road. A good rule of thumb is that you can get reception if you can see the city.

P.S. I found some pants

My wife's pretty pregnant right now, guess I'll have to periodically hike to the top. I usually get pretty good coverage with AT&T

Well I got some great news today! Our day should go a lot smoother and faster. We have a tractor coming out to help courtesy of the forestry service. Thanks Larry!

What can we say? We had a strong turnout of 59 volunteers to help us turn the Glass Factory into a beautiful piece of National Forest again. A good time was had by all. We removed approximately TWENTY TONS of garbage left by inconsiderate people who don't clean up after themselves. We shared lunch, we gave way lots of cool prizes. An amazing day with lots of new friends made and old friends caught up with. If you didn't go, you missed out!

Special thanks for Marborg for providing the drivers, trucks, dumpsters and Porta John for us, we really couldnt do the cleanups without you. Thanks to Goleta Valley Gun & Supply for the great gun accessory prizes. Thanks to Calgunners Gtturborex, SoCalMountainMan, RedMonkey and everyone else who helped to organize and run the event and for the food and drink donations. Thanks for Calgunner Canthavenuthingood (Vick) for his incredibly generous donation of dozens of Calguns hats, t-shirts, polo shirts and sweatshirts, Calgunners Capybara and Dougolupski for the donations of the ammo and shotgun prizes.

Most of all, thank you to the Santa Barbara and surrounding community for coming together to help us clean this place up and make it beautiful again. You never cease to amaze us with your teamwork, good spirits and generosity.

Yes, I think we made a difference in how the Glass Factory looks

This is what we began with at 7:30 AM

Yep, we shut it down

Trucks pulled in, Our good friends at Marborg dropped off our first dumpster

Man! Some people are messy

Where televisions go to die

Lots of raking was needed today

Climbing the hills to remove debris left by inconsiderate shooters. — at The Glass Factory.

You wouldn't believe what people leave out here

The crew, hard at work!

Two of our friends from Santa Barbara City College's Phi Theta Kappa. Thank you gentleman for your hard work.

The Forest Service was kind enough to rent a tractor. Unfortunately it broke right up the road from the Glass Factory. We sent our best to try to repair it but it couldn't be repaired without a computer and diagnostics.

Lots of hard working young people came out to clean up and show us old people how it's really done.

THANK YOU to our friends at MARBORG for a place to answer the call of nature besides in nature

Youngest guy at the cleanup and one of the hardest working. — at The Glass Factory.

We filled two 40 yard dumpsters to the top.

Working Hard!

Bringing down a load of garbage from the hills

Surveying the scale

We had volunteers combing the hills, what an amazing job they did.

Entire families came out to help!

Our Finnish friend found Katness' arrow

Just amazing how much garbage people leave when they shoot at our beautiful range

Getting ready to drag it down the hill

Ranger Larry surveys the cleanup

This is how we dump 300lb wheelbarrows of garbage when our tractor breaks

These guys were awesome!

Marborg dropping off our second dumpster

These were our foreign exchange students from Santa Barbara City College's Phi Theta Kappa fraternity. They were all super nice, very cool, fun and helpful. Thanks guys for helping us out!

Enough wood for many bonfires was removed

Getting ready to take it down the hill

[/IMG]

Lots of heavy metal!

Oh my gosh, did our saviors from the PAINTED CAVE FD bring in their front loader to help us?

Why I believe they did! THANK YOU to the Painted Cave FD, you guys saved us so much time and backbreaking labor

A man with a rake and a mission

SoCalMountainMan was a cook extraordinaire

Even though we had a front loader, we still needed lots of people to help

We are not allowed to scrape the earth with the front loader so every load is still put into the scoop by hand. We want to keep the GF as pristine as possible

We even had to volunteers to hike waaaaay up to the top to bring down some garbage

There will be some sore backs tonight from all of the bending and lifting. Thank you volunteers!

Organizing it is nothing, it's you guys who volunteer to come out and work your rear off who are the real heroes. Thanks for making it out to help us UMD. Hope you had a good time.

We just got a nice write up on Ed Hat, the local Santa Barbara-centric website for last weeks cleanup of the Glass Factory. Now I am just waiting to hear feedback from Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and Congresswoman Lois Capps

Glass Factory is closed. Will stay closed until December or whenever there is enough rain fall to reduce combustible material throughout the entire National Forest to below 50%.
