Default Semi Auto Tommy guns?

is it possible to legally own one here in CA or do our ridiculous laws stop us as they have a pistol grip and detachable magazine?

Some people make it featureless with a grip fin. Of course you would have to arrange for a FFL to make it compliant before it comes to California.

There is a kit for a Ruger 10/22 that makes it look sorta like a Thompson SMG. Since rimfire it can have a pistol grip.
For me a real looking 45cal Tommy needs to be an SBR too.

Get in touch with Deerslayer (Dan Block) over on the Semi-Auto Thompson section of the Machinegun Boards - specifically the post California Modification for Thompsons. Dan does nice work - here is a link to my thread here on CG earlier this year showing off some upgrades he did to my 1927A1 - including his California modification for stick mags (blocked to 10-rounds of course).
You can purchase a Thompson and have it sent to him for upgrades, or he had several Thompson's for sale last time we spoke.

best,

Sure. Depending on your situation, you will have to go with a grip wrap and no front pistol grip though. And hauling around a12 pound carbine to shoot 10 rounds is also a bit of a waste. Now, IF you got drums or sticks during the freedom week, that is different.

Reed's Indoor Range in San Jose has the WW2 style one in stock. There's also a store in the SF East Bay that stocks them I think. And then Wilde Built Tactical in San Diego can make them for you.
