Renewal started yesterday. Hopefully, mine is as fast as the recent renewals.

I don't know what is going on but I submitted a change of address modification about a week ago and still haven't heard anything back. Only had my license a few months so maybe they think it's shady? Only reason I'm updating is because I purchased a home it's not like I was evicted from my last place for being a delinquent. Sent a follow up email asking if more info was needed and never got a response, maybe tomorrow??

Sacramento News and Review is a marxist trash bum paper. They are filled with racist hate and lies. They need to be held accountable by money and prison penalties.

Agree with assessment of N&R...but they have survived for years, sometimes landing big stories.

In this case, they are confirming the issue raised by Paladin in an earlier post regarding SSD rejection rates of 70%. While I believe in and support the individual right to keep and bear arms, one can only wonder what a pro-CCW sheriff was seeing on applications which caused him to clamp down.

He's not up for re-election for 2 years, and he's tried to quit before, so it's not an election pressure issue.

Had my interview this week....Sheriff's Office folks were cordial and nice, and very helpful in explaining the process and the questions they asked. Apparently the committee is meeting this week as well, so I may know the results soon.

Well, basically what Dvrjon says below is dead on. They asked questions generally the same as the application questions, or the questions you answer when you purchase a gun, but with more detail. No stress, no "gotcha", just simple questions that anyone who has lived their own life can answer. No papers or documents were needed beyond what I had submitted electronically. Thanks for the well wishes....my fingers are crossed as well

Initials take precedence....from Yeravener’s post, the panel met this week, so focus would have been on processing those.

Your day will come....

Had my interview today. It went great. The gentleman who interviewed me was very informative and pleasant. He saw no reason why I wouldn’t be conditionally approved although stated that it is still at the discretion of the committee. I’m hoping to proceed to live scan sometime next week. Think I’ll schedule my range qualification for Dec. 4/5 to have that done and out of the way.

You’ll do fine. Do you go to the range? I did my qualifications when I went to the range maybe once a year. Now I do it once every other week at least.
You’d be surprised how well you do w your non dominant hand.

Two things seem to concern folks the most about the qualification shoot: Timed fire and reloads. Understand the first and the second falls in line.
The Sac Sheriff Course of Fire (CoA) is the CoA for BSIS security guard qualification, and has been around for decades.

The 3 volleys of 2 shots and 2 volleys of 3 shots, along with the six-round increments exist because this was designed for a six round revolver. While it can be run with a revolver, most folks tend to run a modern semi-automatic pistol for CCW. Courses I’ve taken have you load 6 in the mag, then fire the required volleys.

The longest stage is 12 rounds in 25 seconds at 7 yds.: Fire 6 strong hand, unsupported; reload (mag change) and fire 6, weak hand unsupported. Most ranges limit shooting cadence to 1 shot per second, so you should be familiar with that cadence. At one shot per second, your actual firing in this stage will take 12 seconds. That leaves you 13 seconds to aim between shots and reload. But, the 1 round per second cadence incorporates bringing the gun back on target. So, you have 13 seconds to change mags.

Sit quietly and look at the second hand of your watch or a clock. Watch 13 seconds go by.

If you take your time and shoot at 1 round per 1.5 seconds, you’ll shoot for 18 seconds. You have 7 seconds to change mags.

There’s plenty of time to reload and get rounds on target in this phase. The others work the same way without reloads or weak hand firing.

A final note on the weak hand shooting. Take your time changing grips and getting set. The tendency is to rush after the reload and you can pull the first shot. That gets into your head and can mess up other shots.

Good luck.

Update: I emailed and they sped up my modification, likely because it expires on Sunday. However, I think I would still be waiting if I had not emailed SSO. I waited to submit my renewal, because I heard it was taking 24hrs. If you have a renewal coming up, I would consider submitting earlier, because I think they are swamped.

I go to the range bi weekly. Been shooting for almost a year now. Haven’t trained much one handed or with my off hand. I guess the timing of things has me a bit intimidated I just have to make sure to remind myself to take my time.

Ok, I am a bit embarrassed to admit this, but, for the good of the team, I will. It will make you feel much better.

I have been shooting revolvers for 30 years, as a pleasure hobby, in the desert, at ranges, etcetera. Mellow, no-rush shooting. I tried semi autos several times and just couldn't warm up to them.....I am left handed.

So, enter this year. I determine I want a semiauto and a revolver for CCW, so I rent one, and then later buy a used HKP2000SK. Left handers will know this is just about the only on-roster pistol with LH slide release and mag release.

I made plans to get to the range, check the sights, and get familiar with the firearm, determine if it likes 115g, 124g, or 147g ammo, etcetera. Work is super busy and I never made it.

So.......I show up at the 16hr with a pistol I have never shot, except for a similar rental one day two months ago, with the 147g (hoping it likes it), and not much shooting of any kind lately due to workload.

I passed. 30 years of shooting, and the required course of fire and it's associated time frames, worked out. The amount of time the course of fire allows is plenty. The trick is emotional control to not shoot too fast, drop shots, and leave time unused.

Relax, know your time and COF for each round, and use your time. If you are nervous you may not remember the COF and time allotment the instructor just told you. Repeat the COF and time allotment back to the instruction to get it in your head, if necessary.

I did not do all this perfectly, but it is clear from the experience that this is the right way to accomplish the qualification. Situational awareness of rounds and time, and mental control will win the day.

Also, on an unrelated topic, you folks may all know this, but you can check your livescan status here: https://applicantstatus.doj.ca.gov/.

Cheers!

Folks,

A substantial portion of the 16Hr COF is designed around 6 round volleys. Has anyone taken the 16 HR COF with a 5 round revolver? I would think that where the COF requires 6 rounds, that a person will just have to reload after 5, and shoot one more, then transition to the next step. Is this the case? That would make it a bit more complicated:-)

Don’t sweat it...there’s so much info scattered out there that sometimes the search doesn’t help. The Sheriff’s instructions to trainers provides the Course of Fire and has modification guidance in the second page footnote.

You don’t have to kneel:
Quote:
ADA accommodations can still be made at the discretion of the instructor.
Lower capacity guns can be accommodated:
Quote:
Additional, instructors may make reasonable accommodations based on the weapon(s) being used to qualify their student that may have a restrictive capacity for the course of fire.
I ran the revolver before that guidance came out.

The first time I ran it, on the 12-round stage, the instructor had me load 5/shoot 5; reload 1/shoot 1. Reload 5/kneel/shoot 5; reload 1/shoot 1. That’s inefficient.

Second time around, I loaded 5/shot5; reloaded 5/shot 1; Knelt/shot 4; reloaded 2/shot 2.

One less reload; Much faster and smoother.

Big hint with revolvers....dump the brass on the floor. Pick it up later. (That’s how semi-autos work).

ETA: if you really want to get bored by detail, try this.

I got my CCW Certification at 'Best CCW Training' in Lincoln. bestccwtraining.com 916-744-6969
John, the instructor is a vendor here, or at least was when i went a few months ago.
Great instructor, and he walks you through the whole process with ease. the two days goes by faster than you know.

There even is a Calguns discount, though i dont remember what it was- I'd just mention a discount and he will give it to ya.

How long do you have if you get approved at the interview to get the training done?

You don’t have to kneel: Lower capacity guns can be accommodated:

I ran the revolver before that guidance came out.

The first time I ran it, on the 12-round stage, the instructor had me load 5/shoot 5; reload 1/shoot 1. Reload 5/kneel/shoot 5; reload 1/shoot 1. That’s inefficient.

Second time around, I loaded 5/shot5; reloaded 5/shot 1; Knelt/shot 4; reloaded 2/shot 2.

One less reload; Much faster and smoother.

Dvrjon, thank you for the info source..it is good to know the official ground rules.

Had my interview today which answered that question (6 months in case anyone was curious). Went pretty well I'd say, interviewer was friendly and just asked the basic questions, when he asked me why I was applying for a CC permit he pretty much stopped me when I started to elaborate and said 'self-defense is all we need to hear'. I was approved literally hours later, going to try and knock out my live scan and classes as soon as I can.

It’s funny, my LEO friends told me similar- less is more and more is no good: just answer the question and don’t volunteer anything they didn’t ask. I heard them complain about while they’re on duty and the person they’re questioning just word vomits everything and the LEO thinks “ah **** now I have to put that in my report and it will take longer”.

Good to know they do the same during the interview.
