There goes Bonetti shooting area and thousands of acres of beautiful forest. My playground. Probably won't open back up for years.

My thoughts are with those with homes affected. It looks like they're really emphasizing that western boundary to ensure it doesn't overrun Sly Park and Jenkinson Lake homes.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Stanislaus closed down next.

Need an early dump of snow.

The article I saw wasn't clear if it was arsonist behavior or just a retarded methhead not doing safe fire behavior... never mind the fact that camp fires in wilderness areas were shut down.

Bonnetti is gone.
Tried to get back today to rescue a ton of 22lr... Note. Area is closed down. Talked to a couple of sexy sheriff's... They were escorting people in this morning, but then had a bunch that hunkered down and refused to leave, ruining it for everyone.

Thanks for the well wishes... Will try again tomorrow.

The house is still there, the winds are blowing east. If they change to the west, it's gonna suck.

I'm getting a haircut tomorrow so I don't look like a crazy person.
Throughout this, the men of the EDSO remain super professional... Best department in the state.

Praying extra for all of the guys up there on the lines risking their lives everyday for those of us that want to live in a forest.

They're evacuating large areas of Amador County now.

My son is in Red Coral and got the evac warning. I live in Pine Grove and haven’t heard anything yet.

Left Tahoe yesterday because the smoke was so bad. Drove over Echo Summit down to Placerville and the smoke was really bad, and it was just getting going.

The forest needs it, but I always hate hearing about people losing homes and property.

My wife's parents cabin is in the evacuation area north of 50. It also where I deer hunt and that's cancelled until October but that's ok. My dad's side cabin is in Buckhorn off 88 and in the evacuation warning area my cousin is driving up now to get family picture albums.

As far as closing the el dorado national forest north of 50... Saturday is the deer archery opener. If the fire gets over 50 it will roar up the northern face of the American river canyon and trap tons of hunters up there with no where to go except deeper into the forest or maybe out the west vis peavine if they get lucky.

People would get killed or put others in deaths grasp trying to save them.

“I saw an early interview with a resident who'd lived there for 45 years and had worked as a volunteer firefighter in the area and his initial assessment since he was near the head of the fire was campers started the original fire, which was small for a day or more. The news reporter quickly changed the subject though. I don't know whether that footage is still out there or not.”

Similar with Dixie. Painted it with retardant. No ground crew (some road closure for construction). Sent up a drone and declared it a non issue. Next day BOOM.

I've been looking for that interview but haven't found it yet. It was live when I watched it. That guy was known as 'Fred on the hill' or something like that, he was a fixture in the area. Seemed to really know his stuff. I believe the sign he was standing in front of during the interview was for a place that later got torched but some of the buildings survived. It was some sort of a resort or campground. I saw it on a later news report after the fire blew up.

Also, early on, meaning early on the morning of the 17th, I heard numerous scanner calls for resources and there were 'none to send'. I happened to be up at 4am or so checking on the Dixie fire and noted a blob on the satellite runs to the south and checked it out.

I understand that fires in BFE might not get resources or might experience delays but this fire was near a heavily populated and traveled corridor to Lake Tahoe. Something about the whole deal doesn't make sense. Heck, if the winds blow right it could end up in Lake Tahoe. Not much to stop it.

Zoom.Earth has a pretty good live heat map and wind direction feature.

It is interesting that most of Grizzly Flats is now showing pretty cool, but it is still hot to the East, West and North, and the wind is gently blowing Westward. ---> back toward Pollock Pines, Sly Park, Pleasant Valley, Somerset, Fair Play, Omo Ranch...

ROTFL!! Wil on the Hill? (or is it Wil from the Hill? - I forget)

Based on the description in the earlier post I was wondering if it was Wil.

He was apparently interviewed by a couple of different outlets at different locations. He is a magnet for the media. At least one of the video clips of him is getting some national coverage - he is getting calls from friends back east.

He is only on the first few seconds of this video, apparently there are others.

Edited: Searching for the other vids I discovered that Sac Bee bumped into Wil and quotes him extensively, but I have not tracked down these other videos he appears in...

Cancelled family trip next week in Tahoe. Luckily Was able to reschedule the rental property. Really glad we were able to reschedule instead of trying to force it up there.

Thank you! Yes, the man right at the beginning of the video you posted was the man I saw, and the interview I saw was on location somewhere in the area before it really 'blew up' but after the night of the 16th and he finished up with something like 'I don't know if that sign will still be here tomorrow'.

CalFire says 65,500 acres now.

I’m a ways down the road from y’all, but I’ve got plenty of storage space here on the ranch for any vehicles, trailers, or anything else you want to get out of the hills.

As a point of reference, I-5 at Twin Cities road is an easy-to-find point that’s a couple of miles away from my place.

Good luck, and stay safe!

Couldn't get to the house today, but talked to a guy from calfire. He said they're fighting hard on the western edge of the fire to keep it from spreading to my area.

They are. They have a chopper doing runs all day with water/retardant that can be replenished quickly as I’m told.
I came down the mountain on Wednesday and the smoke and ash made me dizzy. No visible fire activity from 50.
The plan is to head back up Monday if 50 is still accessible. I’m at 6403’ elevation SLT.

Fingers crossed/prayers for you and the bunker.

Hey Jason, I've noticed that too from the map. I may have missed it but where is your home? Pollock or the Sly Park area proper?

Noticed an update to the orders/warnings, they've now pushed the warnings into the Lake Tahoe region. There are also warnings/orders not covered on the map for Amador County

I saw one report this crossed Highway 50, but didn't elaborate. Can't find anything else.

Air activity over the fire today has been brisk. Currently there's a mapping aircraft working the fire...

Sounds like they're looking to line, fire and cover the north side of 50 pretty far east as a first line of defense with a backup plan a few miles north. IDK though, looking at this afternoon's satellite, and the wind gusts, Highway 50 is fast becoming untenable. The GPS coordinates cover the bottom of Lake Tahoe at top right.

I saw that but then there wasn't much said about it. It looks like Pinto linked their Twitter feed.

Thanks!

We went to Tahoe turned around and left. The smoke is so bad you would think the fire is there. Virginia city was nice.

I'd just like to point out, I was the one saying we should all wash or cars to make it rain.

What happened today?

It rained. In August. ON THE FIRE.

toot toot... That's me tooting my own horn.

Taking my truck to Splasherville tomorrow to get her washed... Let's keep this going!

Any air tracking sites that are set up with detail maps of what they are flying over? I was trying to figure out exactly they were dumping water, but the way the map was configured I could not make out the landmarks that would tell me where they were flying.

The flight tracking comes from this site:
https://globe.adsbexchange.com/
I'm not certain where specific aerial mapping fire data being collected can be viewed publicly. AFAIK it's proprietary information for firefighting managers to use in planning. The results may be able to be found in their planning documents, these days a little tougher to access IME than in the past.

The map shown in my sample is one of many templates which can be used, and can be coordinated with the SAR map, also very customizable, to provide specific data. I run on a mobile hotspot 24/7 and often in poor reception so use simple templates which load faster with my connection. Someone on a fast connection won't have such inhibitions. The second map is found here and can easily be slaved to GPS to provide precise links and zooms; sample:

Fire update from "Wil on the Hill"

I was on the phone with Wil for almost an hour this morning.

He has been staying in the evacuation zone at a Ranch on Grizzly Flat Road just a few miles down from Grizzly Flat and has a lot of freedom of movement Between his history in the county, and everyone he knows and the names of folks he is hanging out with in that no-go zone it is not really a surprise.

As we were talking he was giving an account of vehicles driving by on Grizzly Flat Road - dozens and dozens of fire trucks from cities across Southern California and the Bay area, many trucks with transformers, and several Governors Office of Emergency Services vehicles. (He added the editorial - So now Newsom is going to pay attention to this poop.)

The fire is continuing westward in the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River canyon. Last night there was a spot where it flew up the canyon hillside into properties in Somerset a couple miles west of Grizzly. Fire crews stopped it right at some houses that had HUGE fire breaks on them, but this fire is very active still. The fire is continuing to head west down the canyon and they expect it to run back up the hill to Grizzly Flat road at some point. Wil was on scene last night where and when the fire ran up the canyon wall into Somerset forcing him to flee - insane story.

Hopefully we'll get someone on my property today that can get a report back to me.

A report from a neighbor (about 150 yards away) is that there were fire crews surveying our yesterday, but no details as to what they saw. (My neighbor is a part-timer and has security cameras on battery back up with cell connection)

Some very close friends up in Grizzly had their home miraculously survive the initial fire on Monday/Tuesday, which was cause for celebration... but a flash up later in the week took them out. I was/am crushed. Every day I get more confirmations of friend's homes being gone, but that one hurts the most.

It sounds like this is far from over... we all pray that prediction turns out to be false.

I sent an email to Wil's son this morning trying to track down that video of Wil that some of you mentioned. LOL - Wills couple of interviews are being picked up by outlets all over and people and media outlets are reaching out to him. He is laughing at all this hooopla he has created by his big mouth and wants to parley it into opportunities to explain how screwed up our forest management programs are and what we need to do to fix it.

There is more, but this is all for now - there is a lot of controversy and politics going on regarding how the fire was managed after it started and was at 30-40 acres for a couple of days. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Thanks for the update.
I for one, am expecting to start seeing a LOT more people showing up to the Placerville City Council meetings. As of late it's been just a dozen people, most of which are old Karens and the few libtards we have running around whining about stuff.

If people don't go and hold them accountable, they'll continue to think it's just fine to do things like not fix the roads, clean up the forest, and not remove the noose from our town's various signs.
