Blem Harrington & Richardson 723 Style Carbine 5.56 Rifle, Black $985.99 Not bad, usually these are over a thousand, aren't they? If I was going to buy an old crappy AR, this is probably the one I'd pick. I don't know how faithful a copy they are - a buddy had 2 of these and they were about 5.5 pounds. I couldn't hit a barn door, too muzzle light. ![]() Forward assist but no case deflector. Ordinary looking lower. |

There are more and more matches that have an "old and crappy" division that were hard to get into, because the rifles were so darn expensive. They wouldn't let you just slap a carry handle on top of a Pic rail. Now I'm starting to consider this thing because I have an old Colt carry handle scope...

So I am now a member of the get and have a crappy old style AR eh ? Rock River old style carry upper, stainless match bbl, and a Superior lower and A2 stock. Uhh maybe I finally fit in eh. Maybe so, maybe not.

To me the photo resembles a 653 more than a 723. The main reason is that the 723 had a C7 upper.

Aren't the other retro guns on the market more expensive? I thought it was a relative bargain.
After I watched it, I wanted to buy one, lol. Larry Vickers is a cool cat. |

I like the og ARs for the same reason I like Garands,Carbines,FALs and M1A's in wood. They aren't work guns. If for some reason I needed to go back to work I'd choose a modern rifle with a modern optic, but it's just a tool, not something I'd give a **** about owning or ever taking to the range.

I thought if funny that they got the buffer tube nut correct but then used a round FA instead of the tear drop... I like both..but that just me...and who has a buffer nut tool to fit that anymore.. (I do..lol)

Round FA is normal on the 723. Tear drop style was used on earlier style rifles/carbines.

My M16A2 never let me down and didn't have a bunch of crap hanging off it. You could still mount scopes, etc to carry handle if needed.
I can appreciate some modern AR-15/M4, etc, but sometime kiss / retro is better. |

Hey, hey, you guys are being too picky. Just be happy they have an actual carry handle upper not a flat-top with a detachable carry handle. And a pencil barrel profile, not the M4 or A2 barrel profile.
Those always make me vomit when I see some guy's "retro" builds with flat top uppers and M4 or A2 barrel profiles. This is the best I could do for a "featureless" retro carbine build, upper is a Colt LE carbine upper: I'm interested in another retro build using a gray PSA H&R A1 upper and 16" carbine pencil barrel assembly.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it came from a 6520. I got it used from Armsunlimited and replaced the flashhider with a fake A2 style thread protector.

got the same upper , great shooter... I put a AIM A2 closed end comp on mine...looks the part but Ca. compliment ...(ugh)
Attachment 1169312 if the H&R were for sale in Ca. like the photo...I'd buy one and "fix" it up a bit...

I have both retro and modern, but prefer the crappy old AR due to how lightweight and handy they are.
Modern AR’s are getting to be like Honda Civics

There's nothing inherently wrong with "old" and "crappy" is largely a personal perspective.
In fact, "new" may (or may not) be "in," but "new" AND "improved" is also a matter of perspective and is actually not much, if any, 'improvement' and, too often, a seemingly inappropriate descriptor. What always amuses me are those who claim they'd never carry a Garand due to it weighing 9.5 lbs. and having 'limited' ammo capacity. Yet, these are the same guys who lug around a 'modern' M16/M4 with all the techo-stuff which comes in at nearly the same weight to 'shoot' at distances that used to be the bailiwick of a Thompson at 'almost' 10 lbs. The bottom line is that while the theme has always been to 'lighten the load,' it hasn't really been accomplished... U.S. Army & Marine Ammo Loads During WWII. Instead, weapons have been developed in relation to tactics 'invented' by the Old Guard, using those 'crappy old' weapons to increase the effectiveness of the tactic and/or account for a general decrease in marksmanship going into the military. |

I guess I'm something of a dinosaur because I like the look of the retro AR's much more than the modern ones.

It's not the original H&R that made M16s for the military back in the day. It's the H&R brand that PSA bought to market their "retro" line of ARs. Which makes sense for an authentic rollmark on a retro AR. PSA bought Nodak Spud (NDS) to become part of "H&R" since NDS was probably the leader in retro AR receivers.
