What are the best "cheap" on roster handguns to "STASH" for SHTF?
What are the best handgun options on the roster to stash for SHTF?
Requirements: 1. Cheap <$400 preferably around $200. 2. Fairly reliable, doesnt need to last forever just needs to get you out of a jam. 3. Fairly accurate up to 10ft, not going to be used for combat, only as a last ditch effort to save life if accosted by looters/thugs up to no good. Most likely discharded at pointblank. 4. Won't be missed if it gets lost or confiscated at the FEMA camp. 5. Must be in 9mm, .38spl, .40, or .45 only. No .380, .32 or 10mm. 6. Bonus if its compact and relatively easy to conceal. 7. MUST BE ON THE ROSTER, DONT SUGGEST OFF ROSTER GUNS! Here is what Im thinking: M&P Shield SD9VE XD9 HiPoint C9 Armscor/RIA M206 Charter Arms Magpug, Undercover Taurus 605, 85, 85 polymer EAA Windicator Not really that knowledgeable about cheap .38 revolver options so would like suggestions on those with 2"bbls. Again, the purpose is something relatively affordable, compact, reliable, and accurate to 10ft in 9mm or .38spl that can be stashed and only used in a very up close and personal SHTF situation.

HiPoint 9mm
Armscor revolvers 38 Those would work great IMO.

I'll start off with suggesting you stick with 9 mm or maybe 38 Special revolver.
Right now, even outside of California, the best Quality bang for your buck is the Smith & Wesson Sigma now called The SD9VE. It's made by a quality company that will fix it if it's broken and it was such a close copy to a Glock (in all of its Glock Perfection and utter reliability) Smith & Wesson was sued. I see them in the marketplace here all the time for around $300. People complain that its trigger isn't as good as Glock and needs an upgrade aftermarket trigger, which you can quickly install yourself, but for just stashing a gun you can rely on I don't think you would even have to do that. I'm sure high points are okay too but even if they're working correctly the quality of parts and complaints about magazine issues causing malfunctions makes me think I wouldn't want to rely on one when someone's life is on the line but I would buy one for fun shooting days. My last $0.02 is if I had to only spend $200 or less AND I knew the handgun was going to sit unused for long periods of time I would look into a revolver. Charter Arms has switched hands a few times and there were some bad quality years. Taurus and Rossi also had the occasional quality issue right from the brand new box but I think they I've been working on resolving them. The Armscor is a six-shot compared to most small revolvers that are 5 shot and although that using a very close copy but not exact clone of a Colt detective style revolver I personally would much prefer a used ugly but functional Ruger or even a beat up finish Smith & Wesson if someone's life was going to depend on it to be working all the time and maybe for a long time. Those are good handgun choices, but not throw away "button man" handguns. Too pricey for my taste.
Let the low cost yet reliable stuff be confiscated. Keep the good stuff hidden, but accessible if possible. *even the low cost guns need to be wrung out before being stashed away for emergency use. They MUST work.

My SD9VE has never had a malfunction. Have shot something like 500 rds. through it. It's my house gun.

This. You'll find better and you'll find cheaper but i think you'll be hard pressed to find better for the price or cheaper for the quality.

I don't see Ruger P89 or P95 on your list. If you come across them they're usually ~ $300 and will do the job.
Heavy, ugly as sin, but they work. Kinda like an upscale Hi-Point.

Armscor M206 SD9VE Taurus 85 Ruger P89/95 Khar CW9 I’d trust any of those listed above and they’ve worked fine in my experience.

What do you mean by "stash for SHTF"?
If you mean: I want a gun for myself that I can load, store, retrieve, and shoot; then your best bet is a revolver with a couple speed loaders and 500 rounds. All the ones listed above are OK, but I am partial to S&W and would be willing to pay more for it. If you mean: I want to buy 20 handguns, and 10,000 rounds to outfit your own private "army" then affordability is a bigger issue. Hi Point is $179 and the S&W SD9VE/SD40VE is $399. If you can afford 20 x $400 then go with the S&W, if not then go with the Hi Point. I think it's worth noting that in the second scenario you are not betting your life on a cheap pistol, you are betting someone else's life on a cheap pistol. I don't know about you but my life is well worth a $500 Glock, but someone else's life . . . $179 is plenty! In all of these scenarios I would recommend buying the gun, clean the gun, lubricate the gun, shoot the gun until you are satisfied with it's reliability, clean the gun, lubricate the gun, seal in a sealer bag with O2 absorbers. |

At a pawn shop where my lady bought a Phoenix Arms .25ACP for about $175 out the door. I was looking at it before she purchased, it looked unused. It has not jammed once since the first few mags, but with 2 safety's, and the mag disconnect, it's a PITA, but can be modded to not be. You can get these in 22lr also, for about the same price.
I wouldn't put a .22-.25 in my list of what is in the bedroom for a HD gun, but I have no problem with my Ruger MK-III 22lr as my stashed garage-gun, once she's clean and lubed... Butterscotch. |

Good guns but sadly not on the roster, per OP's requirement. I have a P95 but my Kahr CW9 is a better pocket gun.

If buying for myself, a bunch of G19s sounds about right. The Shield and SD9 are solid options though. Don’t forget holsters, belts, mag carriers...
If I’m stashing handguns, you best believe that I’m also including a longarm with every handgun. A Maverick 88 is under $200, and is a better weapon than pretty much any handgun ever made. Those Ruger 9mm carbines are pretty neat as well, and would be a good pairing to a G19. Bonus that they are takedown... — Michael |

If the surplus Makarov's weren't so stupid expensive, that would be a great stashable/ditchable for the under $200 range.
Given the OP's original criteria the Hi Point and Armscor are still the hot tickets IMO. Sent using a long string and 2 used soup cans

I'd think as many cheap revolvers as possible since they'll just be sitting and not being used waiting for SHTF. Mostly .38 , lots of good cheap 9mm auto's around too.
And I know you said handguns but i'd grab a few single shot shotguns as well , Midland got a new cheap one out that will eventually have barrels in other calibers. Maybe get some adapters and YES I know adapters are booty but wouldn't hurt. |

1. I would want a new working firearm for a stash can. 2. 605 with the right FFL would be cheaper OTD then that Glock. 3. It would need a rebuild n mag 4. Some FFL don’t count the Gen 1/2 Glock’s to be on roster Not a S&W SD9VE fan but that is your best bet. Little more you can have a XD9

Thats a pretty cool concept. I fondled an SD9VE over the weekend. It seems like a good basic gun with a really long trigger pull. The trigger break reminds me of the M&P but with a much longer pull. Not really a dealbreaker. Maybe I'll pick a used one up if I see a good deal.

I think you're going about this the wrong way. If you are presuming that you will need a firearm(s) then selecting a cheap firearm of dubious reliability does not seem to be a well thought out survival solution.
A better option could be a sks (or 3) with a few spam cans buried in the right spot. You can pick up beat up but functional law enforcement/military surplus firearms for relatively cheap as well. Do you really want to be in a tight spot a know you're going to rely on a junk gun? |

I wouldn't consider an SD9VE or an M&P shield a "junk gun". Maybe the Hipoint, but I've never owned one and everybody that does have one, swears they are just as reliable as Glocks. This exercise is about handguns. I already have the SHTF longgun situation figured out. Dont need any input on that, thanks. Just to reiterate I never said anything about wanting a "junk gun" to rely on in SHTF. That was not the purpose of this thread. If it is your opinion that all of the guns that have been mentioned are "junk guns", then so be it. Obviously I have nothing to do with the reasoning of your opinion.

I am liking this thread because I have been trying to answer this same question myself but from a slightly different angle. Instead of a stash-away SHTF gun I have been wanting to add a firearm to my Get Home bag that I keep in my car. I keep a bag in my car with enough supplies to handle a 40-mile 1-3-day hike. Hopefully, I will never need to touch those supplies.
My requirements... costs ~ $200-300, and won’t disturb me too much if someone god forbid broke into my car and stole it. |

Poll added
Added a poll just for fun. Yes, I left the Hipoint off the poll on purpose just to vex all the guys who believe they are not only equal to Glock but actually "better" than Glock. Multiple choice choose, as many options as you want.

+1 for the agency trade in Glocks. They are run through before being sold, are generally in great condition and lots already have night sights. But like Deckhandmike said the 442 is a solid choice. The 442 is my 98% of the time carry gun, to the point I’m considering selling my Glock 43. I love those little 442’s.
