Default CA Deer tag question: Countersigning tag after take (kill)?

New hunter question:
1. Who do you use to countersign your deer tag?
2. Can I go to my local fire station (seems to be the easiest I can think of)?

From the California Fish and Game Commission website:
https://fgc.ca.gov/regulations/current/mammals

Fish and Game Code, Section 4341
and
Mammal Hunting Regulations 708.6
• (a) Any person legally killing a deer in this state shall have the deer license tag countersigned by a person authorized by the commission as described in subsection (c) before transporting such deer, except for the purpose of taking the deer to the nearest person authorized to countersign the license tag, on the route being followed from the point where the deer was taken (refer to Fish and Game Code, Section 4341).
• (c) The following persons are authorized to countersign deer and elk tags.
(1) State:
• (A) Fish and Game Commissioners
• (B) Employees of the Department of Fish and Wildlife, including Certified Hunter Education Instructors
• (C) Employees of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE)
• (D) Plant Quarantine Inspector, Supervisor I, and Supervisor II
(2) Federal:
• (A) Employees of the Bureau of Land Management
• (B) Employees of the United States Forest Service
• (C) Employees of the United States Fish & Wildlife Service
• (D) All Uniformed Personnel of the National Park Service
• (E) Commanding Officers of any United States military installation or their designated personnel for deer or elk taken on their reservation.
• (F) Postmasters & Post Office Station or Branch Manager for deer or elk brought to their post office.
(3) Miscellaneous:
• (A) Firefighters employed on a full-time basis, only when the deer or elk carcass is brought to their fire station.
• (B) Judges or Justices of all state and United States courts.
• (C) Notaries Public
• (D) Peace Officers (salaried & non-salaried)
• (E) Officers authorized to administer oaths
• (F) Owners, corporate officers, managers or operators of lockers or cold storage plants for deer or elk brought to their place of business.

I use whoever I find first. Usually I run into a CADFW person in the field or go to a fire station on my way home if I don't see any. If you use a butcher they can also sign your tag.

Long list, no problem finding someone. Good hunting!

You can have fire personnel do it but I had a bad experience with a fire
station on Green valley rd.

It was about 30 years ago and he said he needed to take my tag,
license and DL into the station for some premise.

The dumb .... was sure my deer was out of season and I spent about an hour with my deer in a hot truck while he called enough people to be certain that X8 archery opens up the week before D5 archery.
(which is the zone the fire station was located in)

Another time I drove well out of my way to a DFG checkpoint with my first deer, a forked horn.

The warden had no qualms about remarking that I had shot Bambi.

After checking the teeth it turns out it was an older buck that had regressed but still.

I have no intention of not complying with regulation including the computer requirement now but let's just say "FU, just sign the paper" will always be on the tip of my tongue.

If you do go to F&W office make sure it's your first stop before going home.....they will fine you at about 450.00 if you go the next day.

You can also call the cal tip line and ask to meet a warden for sign off........my local forestation said they have no right to sign a tag even though they read the regs.

I stop by highway patrol or any cop shop. Years ago I stopped by HP station on desoto in Woodland Hills and had in back of pickup lowered tailsgate and female chippie signed tag. Some tree hugger saw it and went nuts in parking lot. I laughed my *** off and the female chippie thoght funny to.She was from Michigan and hunts. Kudos to her. She chose to come out and validate tag. I took to Green Acres in Simi for processing.

I've only had to do it once, but I was able to get it done at a ranger station. The older lady was pretty stoked and was complimenting my buck.

I use whomever I find first. If I harvest a deer at home, I'll go to my local fire station because, they know me but, I've considered going to the post office in the middle of town just to see how long it would take to convince them that it's alright for them to sign it.

Pretty plain language. You go to the closest person authorized (on the list) to sign it off.

One time I came out of the field at about 10pm and there is nothing open.
I go home to sleep, the next day I drive to F&G luckily one of the bios came out and gave me a lecture on how the wardens love to site you for not going direct to the warden or cosigner.........letter of the law verses intent......he said call the tip line next time. the warden will meet you to sign off
