Rods or snakes?
Hello,
this might have been discussed in the past but, here we go: I have only used bore snakes to clean the barrels... i just bought a rod for my new shotgun but i didn’t like it pushed all the gunk into the receiver. What do you think? |

I use either/or and some time both. It depends on how grungy the barrel is which can be ammo type dependent.
Respectfully Kyle

Snake for quick cleaning, rod for thorough cleaning. Why are you not taking the barrel off the shotgun to clean it? I was always taught to clean in the same direction as the bullet travels, breach to muzzle. Of course with a revolver this is difficult, but that's where Otis kits come in.

"Rods or snakes?"
What ever she wants to call it is fine with me But seriously, I use both. Once in a bluemoon I give my barrels a deep cleaning with a rod and patches. Yes, when ever possible, to prevent possibly damaging the crown of your barrel you want to run the rod from the breach end. If the firearm doesn't allow for this you can buy a rod guide to help protect the crown. I have a couple of guns that can only be rod cleaned from the muzzle end, I just have to be prepared for a longer cleaning session with lots of paper towels and q-tips on those days. Most of the time I just run a snake through it and clean the action and put it away until I'm in the mood for a deeper cleaning. LOL, remember when you used to love clean guns? |

Rod, like the snake should go from chamber to muzzle (back of gun to front of gun)

I have and use both, but mainly snakes. I have dirty and clean snakes for all calibers. I use the dirty snakes with solvents, and light oil with the clean snakes.
