Personally I love a 9mm carbine for the range and general fun. But complementing a 9mm carbine with a 9mm pistol is silly.

I want a rifle to complement a pistol. I don't want a long gun with all the downside of a 9mm and being larger and heavier but being more accurate at 100 yards. I can make hits with a handgun out to 150.

Now an actual rifle caliber yes.

Yeah, having the same ammo a feel good thing. Showing up at the range with your 9mm Glocks and pc carbine is a self atta-boy thing. Hell, I have a 9mm AR upper, but that is for just fun-novelty.

In real life, like for all around defense, who is gonna go with a 9mm carbine over an AR? I'm gonna have my glock 9mms and I'm gonna have my AR in 556/223 for the real thing.

Having matching calibers in your pistol and rifle is a novelty. Why compromise your real world firepower? If you are about minimizing your stuff so it can fit in the front trunk of your Tesla, and impressing yourself, that's cool too.

At that point my choice would be AR10. 5.56 is a fun round, but a larger roiund makes more sense (at least to me).

I enjoy shooting a 9mm carbine more than I enjoy shooting a 5.56 rifle - but I REALLY enjoy shooting a .44 carbine

A semiauto 9mm carbine and pistol is just illogical. Makes more sense to carry a couple mags in 9mm for the pistol and a lot more .223 for a carbine.

The carbine is a primary weapon, pistol is secondary.

Have you considered the person owning them might not be able to readily access ranges that allow them to shoot standard rifle caliber firearms?

I've had to live in enough cities where the ranges are effectively restricted to shooting rimfire, handgun, and shotgun rounds while rifle rounds are effectively prohibited due to limited size and a backstop that couldn't handle anything faster than a .44 Magnum. At that point I'd say the person that actually goes to the range with their pistol caliber carbine regularly makes more sense than the person that has their rifle-caliber long gun but hasn't done more than dry firing it because the nearest rifle range for them is far enough to make practice infrequent or even nonexistent.

As for the .22 LR vs 9mm argument, I'd rather take a 9mm carbine over a .22 rifle; better ballistics and terminal performance at typical shooting ranges. Move up to a centerfire rifle cartridge and then you'd have a stronger argument.

I don’t see any tactical advantage. For simplifying range trips and general plinking, sure. But if it’s TEOTWAWKI a 9mm pistol (Glock 17/19) and a 5.56 rifle (AR15) are the best option for ammo sourcing and replacement parts availablity.

For SHTF, there may be better combinations, but I do like the simplicity for more casual situations.

I have several .22 rimfire combinations. In centerfires, I have .44 mag and .45 Colt lever action rifles and 2 revolvers in each of those.

The rifle is a Rossi model 92. A little rough (sights were loose and fell off in about 10 rounds of full power 454 loads, still haven't replaced them).

But I stumbled on it brand new on-line about 10 years ago and since I had my Freedom Arms model 83 in 454, wanted a companion rifle in same caliber and the Rossi was the only reasonable choice then. It is an unfinished project that I need to finish at some point.

Excellent! I have .22 combos and would love a .357 model 92 to go with one of my revolvers but they are hard to find and somewhat expensive.

BUT, I don't shoot what I have enough and realistically cannot justify buying another rifle (no room in the safe either). So this will be a pipe dream for me.

100%... I want to have more of this. I am a big lever gun fan and if prices ever come down on guns that will be my next craze. I have I think five lever actions right now. Seven if you count rolling block type lever actions. In any case, I want to get a .38/357 lever gun and a .44 lever gun. The .357 to pair with my Vaquero and or a couple .38snubbies I have and the .44 to pair with the Ruger Alaskan Guide I want to get.

The SHTF thing always comes up and one of the favorites is that carbine and pistol use the same ammo so there is compatibility and so on, maybe even the same magazines ala the Ruger and Glock. If you're reloading your carbine with ammo from your pistol, things are probably not going your way and likely won't in the few seconds you have left. If you are reloading your Pistol from the carbine then maybe .....ahhh you get the picture.

But mostly it's just people who like having a carbine and pistol using the same ammo. For some it's just convenient, others like the additional range and accuracy. A similar thing happens with rimfire where someone enjoys a revolver or pistol and a rifle shooting the same ammo. It's not about the power but about one having a bit more range coupled with easier to achieve accuracy and maybe it's just fun.

Take away the fun aspect of guns and this place could probably just close up shop, most people aren't preppers in the sense spoken around here (muh guns) and without fun in it or at least a lot of satisfaction, you could get by with one gun.

You don't see many 10mm Carbines although a soft loaded 10 in a pistol equaling 9mm and a best load in 10mm in the carbine really does give enough separation to acknowledge very different capabilities. The thing is, that once you take the same cartridge and boost it to give the carbine a large capability lead over the pistol then its just as easy to move to a typical rifle cartridge because shooting that maxed out load in 10mm out of a pistol is a big WHY?, if it's just to have the 10mm carbine or 10mm pistol.

I have a Ruger that with the adapter can use Glock mags. I rarely shoot a Glock the same session I shoot the Ruger. The 9mm shot in the Ruger is quite manageable and fun but borders on unpleasant in a pistol, for casual use.

I say who cares? If you like having both a pistol and carbine that use the same ammo, does it matter what anyone else thinks unless they are buying the ammo and guns for you?

There are two elements to this question.

1. What is the relative advantages of having both pistol vs rifle/carbine for a given situation (range, competition, home defense, ranch applications, civil war/SHTF)? Does the inherent advantages of one form factor over the other outweigh the disadvantages of investing in 2 separate firearms (cost, weight, training, time, etc)?

2. Assuming that the carrying a rifle and pistol is worth it, what round is optimal to be used out of both platforms? E.g. are you giving up too much effectiveness at range to use a pistol cartridge out of a rifle or are your incurring excessive blast, recoil to use a rifle cartridge in a pistol?

For combat, I would submit that pistols in and of themselves are of limited use except in very special circumstances. A small carbine, smg or pdw type platform that is aimed from the shoulder is required to make effective hits beyond 100+ meters. Hence the development of the M1 carbine to replace .45 pistols in WWII.

Pistols shine where discretion, portability is required and engagement distances are within 30meters. E.g. concealed carry, sneaking around post SHTF, etc.

If short-barrel rifles were not NFA items, I think this discussion would be moot as most would gravitate to a compact/concealable pdw/sbr with a cartridge optimized for terminal effectiveness out to 300ish meters while being compact for mag capacity and weight for most practical applications.

That being said, .357mag/.38 is a good combo for revolvers and lever guns. You can shoot either in both platforms in a pinch but I would opt for .357 in the lever gun and .38 in the revolver.

5.7x28 would be interesting, especially the Ruger pistol and carbine combo using the same magazines in both. Maybe something a bit more scaled up from that form factor?

If 7.5bk was not a proprietary offering, it would be interesting to see what types of carbines would be offered.

9mm just out of sheer fact that it is everywhere.

If I were going to do rifle/pistol combo in a semi-auto platform, I would want magazine commonality from a cost and logistics point of view.
