from vague memory: as kids, we got a ziplock full of primers from (somewhere, i forget where). popped some with a hammer, popped some by setting them on the lip inside the water meter cover, and slamming the lid on them.
definitely less loud than hitting a roll of the paper caps with a hammer. |

pistol rounds have six or so grains of shotgun / pistol powder (re: weak). I think a whole lot of the sound is probably the primer.

1 primer not bad at all. 100 +/- at once is deafening...
Recently had an almost full tube of primers detonate at once while using Federal Primers in my Dillon 650. Apparently this is problem with Federal Premiers since the cups are quite a bit softer than other brands. The hearing in my right ear has yet to come back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It is louder using a revolver than a semi, many more ports to push the noise through. So my assumption is those that say it isn't loud used a semi and those that say it is loud used a revolver.
And yes, it will back out against the back plate and lock up your revolver cylinder, but you can remove it....eventually. |

I've used a hammer many times, never bothered my neighbors (live in north San Diego) but it sure does get the ears ringing. Even had a piece of something shoot out and hit me in the hand, now that stung.
One time I was using a bullet puller hammer type since the primer was upside down. on the second wack, the primer went off. Maybe it was me but it seemed way louder and got my heart racing at about 10x, holly frick that scared me Be safe out there Rick |

If not for Federal primers I would be out of primers. When I load a tray or tube I fill the tube and or tray. I know, some reloaders insist they have to tip toe around Federal primers; not me. F. Guffey |

From experience, I can say a primed and otherwise-empty case fired in either an AR-15 or a 308 AR-10 is LOUD. Enough to make my ears ring (and get me running back inside to establish plausible deniability.) I cannot recall setting off a primed case in a pistol, but I suspect it would be equivalent. That said, if you've ever beat an unsupported flat piece of wood with a hammer, you're probably in the ballpark for noise generation. |

Yea, but it does bring back memories... I had a primer ignite while hand priming. My wife to this day accuses me of trying to shoot her.
Was I the only one who took a whole roll (25 I think) of paper caps for a cap gun and hit it with a sledge hammer? Ears rang for about an hour.

I used to shoot the plastic dummy rounds through one of my revolver in 44 Mag and they weren't that bad. I would shoot them in the garage up against the hard wooden plank and the primer would cause the plastic dummy round to fire through the gun fast enough to shoot a clean hole in a piece of paper

I had a 7 yd wax bullet range in my garage in suburban San Diego. With all the doors closed the noise outside wasn't attention getting wrt to neighbors.
One asked me what he had heard and I told him it was a pneumatic staple driver I was using on a furniture project. So the furniture project and the stapler stayed on the work bench for all future wax bullet range work. 10 down, 12 to go. Last edited by sofbak; 05-29-2019 at 9:06 AM.. |

It was as loud as my 380 backup in an open field when I fired it and forgot to put on my ear protection. |

It depends on what you discharge them in. A rifle? Not that loud. A pistol? Very loud. It will make your ears ring. Don’t do it. It’s stupid. If you need to deprime a case, deprime it. The primer won’t go off.
