Watsonville man killed breaking into tent
Be careful out there camping.
Watsonville man shot and killed after breaking into tent TUOLUMNE COUNTY, Calif. - A Watsonville man who entered a pair of campers' tent was shot and killed, according to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office. The altercation occurred at Deadman's campground in the Stanislaus National Forest early Thursday morning. The Sheriff's Office says a couple was sleeping in their tent when a 36-year-old Watsonville man entered the tent around 2 a.m. The woman woke to the Watsonville man on top of her. Her screams woke her boyfriend, and in the ensuing confrontation, the Watsonville man was shot. He died at the scene, authorities say. https://www.kion546.com/news/watsonv...OGQK06Gf1iR_Pg At least it was a happy ending.

What, the shooter was not automatically arrested until everything could be investigated and sorted out? Impossible according to some Calguns members. Obviously the shooter must be a cop and the media is hiding that fact.

Wow. What a harrowing experience for that couple. Glad things were handled the way they should have.
Curious to know exactly what he used. I don't do as much tent camping as I used to but I would always keep my Glock 21 .45ACP with a light on it right next to my sleeping bag loaded with some kind of defensive rounds - usually Hornady Critical Defense. Could be an interesting thread..."What Is Your Tent Gun?" I still have that Glock 21. Second photo was from a backpacking trip a long while ago. You can see her in the tent right above my hat & shirt. Last edited by jonnyt16; 07-15-2019 at 9:47 AM.. |

I live in Tuolumne county and have been following this story on our local news. There was no update today, but if I see one, I will post.
btw: The actual name is Deadman, not Deadman's. It's named after Deadman Creek that flows into the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus River. The creek was named that after a man who was bitten by a rattlesnake on the east side of the Sierra passed away in the canyon above and east Kennedy Meadows. His grave is somewhere in the canyon. --P

Tent gun could be any handgun that I own but backpacking it's the LCRx3.
I also like it to have a DA first trigger pull as I keep it unholstered beside my head, something I won't do with a Glock. |

No, irony would be if it was called "Alive" or "Living" campground.
Yeah, being in CA he probably assumed they would be unarmed. I hope he lived just long enough to regret things. |

Not a very accurate headline. The guy wasn't shot for breaking into the tent, he was shot for assaulting the woman that was in there. More accurate headline would have been Man Shot After Assaulting Woman.
This goes to show how you just never know when trouble may come. |

I have just started another thread about my recent experience while camping in Joshua Tree where we had to draw on an intruder at 2 am.
People do stupid things and we have to be prepared, but we also have to be smart enough not to overreact.

Tent gun?
Any one or more of three .44 Special* single actions with a .45 auto 1911 in the wings. Oh, and a shotgun, because shotgun. I like camping! *Heavy .44 Special, either Buffalo Bore or handloaded to this specification: 250 grain LSWC @ 1000 fps. It will easily dispatch elk and black bear at handgun distances. (I'm looking for some published data for a semi-jacketed load using a 270 Speer Deep Curl at similar velocity, between 1000-1100 fps from .44 Special brass. I know Brian Pearce has mentioned such loads but I might have to write him for clarification.) Caliber and ballistics should be elevated to even higher levels when in grizzly country. I don't know how folks got by in the days before .454 Casull, .500 S&W, .475 Linebaugh, etc... But back in Callahan's day the .44 Magnum was "the most powerful handgun in the world..." To be worthy of consideration today as grizzly defense, however, that .44 Mag should use at least a 300 grain slug.

When we camp/hunt, I keep my 629 handy and my AOW tucked away somewhere inside the tent. I've had bears walk right up to our tent before and stick his nose against it and grunt. Never had to deal with two legged predators though.

The fire fighters basically 'herded' the Donnell fire around the Kennedy Meadows area. They did a great job!
Regarding the shooting incident, the local meadow has been quiet about it. Nothing new in the last few days. Edit: Posted a few minutes ago. The person who was shot has been identified... Quote:

9mm Shield, 9mm 1911 or a .45 1911. It's good to rotate the defense guns. Usually I sleep in the back of my Jeep Wrangler JKU. I also keep a 14.5" AR-15 inside.

Fire burned 50ft or so away from the cabins along 108. Other than Dardenelle's, they protected a lot of structures. The gas pumps survived at Dardenelle's, not much else...... |
