Hopefully I'm wrong. The Senate should just take and pass the House version as-is that way it'll be on the Governor's desk. I don't know what the rules are in SC but I think if a bill gets to the Governor's desk before sine die then it can still become law.

"We are putting a loaded weapon on main street," Sen. Marlon Kimpson (D-Charleston) said.

There are already loaded weapons on Main Street. Most are in the hands of criminals. This legislation would restore the balance by allowing law abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families.

The CC drama in SC continues….

https://www.postandcourier.com/polit...f919c974c.html

ETA: 2023 June 01 is likely the ultimate deadline for CC in SC this year.

With the CC bill being attached to an enhanced penalty for illegal possession and a fentanyl bill I'm actually now thinking they'll FINALLY get it after years and years of Senate committee chairmen blocking it.

So far this year we?ve seen two states adopt permitless or constitutional carry, not only with the support of lawmakers but with the backing of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen. If Louisiana is going to follow suit and become the 28th state to recognize the right to bear arms without a government-issued permission slip, however, legislators are going to have to overcome an anticipated veto by Democrat Gov. John Bel Edwards, who previously killed a similar measure back in 2021.

We're one step closer to that becoming reality today after the Louisiana House voted 70-29 on Tuesday in favor of HB 131, just enough to override Edwards veto at least if no one changes their vote.

That "at least" is an important qualifier. There were enough to override a veto last tie too, but they changed their minds and the measure failed.

It was 3 members of the LA senate who changed their vote AFTER the veto, of course deferring to law enforcement

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) ? A bill that would allow people to conceal carry a firearm without a permit or training is advancing in the legislature.

State Rep. Danny McCormick has brought his so-called ?constitutional carry? bill for the last few years and was previously vetoed by Gov. John Bel Edwards in 2021. Now the bill is finding easier support through the legislature.
Quote:
The Senate Judiciary Committee added an amendment that would raise that age up to 21 from 18 to be able to concealed carry without a permit. A representative from the NRA showed their support for the bill. Some people retracted their support after the amendment was put on, claiming it is unconstitutional to limit this law to just people over 21.
IMHO, .... screw the amendment, get it passed. Then get it changed on constitutional grounds.

Elect a Republican for governor in Louisiana, and easily pass constitutional carry without having to keep the entire state legislative caucus together to override a veto.

Louisiana voted for Trump by 20 points in 2016 and 19 points in 2020. Whatever Republican ran really dropped the d*mn ball to have a Democrat sitting in the governor's mansion over there.

Louisiana has state elections on odd-numbered years like Virginia, so the voters better pick right, pun intended, this November.

Is CC officially dead in SC for this year or is there still time?

Definitely. They can raise their objections now while the numbers are in their favor.
After the veto they need all the votes they can.

Angry Louisiana CC died in their Senate

LOUISIANA Constitutional Carry died in their Senate Finance Committee over possible massive loss of permit revenue, plus LE was against it.

It is absolutely evil that loss of revenue could be cited as a legitimate reason to block a constitutionally protected right.

Let's enact a $100 tax on registering to vote! The government needs its revenue, after all.

I seem to remember that SCOTUS ruled the issuance of CCW reasonable under 2A. But no mention was made of FEES charged for exercising an enumerated right.

Them cajuns need to drag their AG into court to prove [THT] for 2A FEES at time of BOR.

Police officers themselves may support constitutional carry, but police unions are some of the biggest opponents of the policy.

Back when the Indiana and Ohio state legislatures were in the process of passing constitutional carry, police union representatives were out in full force testifying against the bills. Constitutional carry died in Indiana as a result, although thankfully it was resurrected and enacted in a later session. In Ohio, Republicans held the line.

Anyone know if the SC legislature is still in session or if the governor will call them back in (another?) special session?

My local source has taken a leave of absence.. ..

The special session is still rolling, but I read that the constitutional carry bill failed to advance in the state senate and is effectively dead until at least 2024.

Better luck next year.

IIRC next year is still part of this session so it does not need to start over from square one but rather picks up from where they left off.

Virginia would come into play if Republicans manage to flip the state senate this November. The GOP already holds the state house and office of the governor.

I would absolutely love for this to happen, but realistically, I acknowledge that this would require good fortunes and favorable political winds.

Even that wouldn't be enough in Virginia, when you have 2 GOP senators, including the Senate minority leader, voting for an assault weapons ban.

Correct, but this has happened before. The Senate could have passed this easily every year...yet they don't.
I don't put it past them to find some excuse next year and then claim 2025 will be the year.
