Default rubber gaskets

I have some 50-cal ammo cans - some for ammo and others for food storage.

I noticed some of the rubber seals are starting to get small cracks. Any suggestions? I was thinking of a petroleum-based lube or vaseline to preserve the rubber.

Suggestions.

I've always used silicone grease to lube o-rings. Not sure if there is something better for your purpose though.

I got a tub of teflon based food grade grease years ago. I use it on lots of things. Particularly the big o-rings in watering "cans" for my chickens - those things get quite a workout and see weather extremes.

I used to have to replace them every 4-6 months but now with the teflon grease they have lasted 4 years and counting.
