With Orosco Ridge seemingly permanently closed, I'm looking for a new outdoor area where I can go throw clay pigeons and shoot my steel targets out to a few hundred yards. I'm in the Rancho Bernardo area and wouldn't want to travel too much more than an hour to go shoot. I'm looking for someplace that is 100% legal and not some sketchy area ie BBM. Please help a fellow San Diego shooter out with either a PM or a reply in this thread. Thanks. -Chris

If you shot at orosco ridge, I would think these others would be fine, at least there isn't the threat of crossfire at all times. |

I'm up for helping with anything that brings more outdoor shooting areas to san diego. I described BBM as sketchy only because of all the threads I read about boarder patrol and private property concerns. I didn't feel orosco was sketchy at all because I went at times no one else was there and there was signs designating shooting areas. I'd hate to drive all the way down to the boarder, shoot for 10 minutes and be told to leave by BP, therefore, sketchy.

I'd be perfectly willing to help. I guess it depends on what kind of help, though. I don't have any connections, but physical help...sure. I know of one or two others who would just at the chance as well.

I shoot in Ramona, which has been closed lately. But I like the In-Kah-Pah exit off highway 8 even better. From La Mesa it's a 48 minute drive. Pull right off the freeway and shoot.
Drive another 30 minutes and the desert is wide open shooting for free. I also belong to South Bay Rod and Gun. It's 30 minutes from La Mesa in Dulzuro. $75 a year and you can shoot for free whenever you want. They have four outdoor ranges. |

I spoke with the someone at the ranger station today and she said that it would be around a year before Orosco has a chance of opening again. They said they are going to have someone from the NRA look at it to determine if its a viable range. She also mentioned environmental tests that need to happen.

Why does the NRA need to look at it? Maybe they're planning on getting a sponsor for the area and turning it into a gun club type range on NF land? Kind of like WCGC in Santa Barbara.
I can understand the environmental testing. The forest service does that with WCGC as well and I would assume for other "shooting areas." |

Orosco should be closed down IMO. Too dangerous. I've been there on crowded days and bullets and ricochets were flying every which way. There's just too many places to shoot, mixed with some idiots, and it makes for an unsafe range IMO.
My brother-in-law is a Captain of the fire station in Ramona. So he goes there all the time on calls and clean ups and hikes. You'd be amazed at how many people have been hurt there. I love shooting outdoors, but don't particularly care for Orosco. Last edited by XDRoX; 10-26-2010 at 8:58 AM.. |

cjskalka...thanks for the info....did that also apply to the "new" area they were looking to set up? I think I'm going to call and talk about that aspect...I think the old spot, is toast!
XDRox...people get hurt at ranges, hunting, driving cars, getting out of bath tubs\etc....maybe we should shut it all down?!...including sporks (ya know..half fork\half spoon), as they can be pretty dangerous too!! ![]() ![]() sorry...I'm not ready to give in just yet ![]()

I understand you and the others who post in this thread are just trying to find a place to shoot. That area already gets alot of traffic on weekends. While I can't stop you from posting directions for all to see, It would be nice if we could keep it open for shooting by keeping the directions to PM's and remembering to pick up everything we leave out there. I don't mean to sound like an *******, I just think its better for everyone if we don't post directions on an open public forum. |

I, for one, am happy that the directions were posted. Ever since Carrizo Ridge closed, I have been at a loss as to where I could take my boys shooting. While I have been to the Gun and Rod club's range, I never realized that there was one beyond that. Now there is a place that I can take my boys. I agree, though, the actual directions could have been a PM only thing with a teaser thread saying that they exist for any member who would like a PM about them. Oh well, I can't wait to check out the range.

What does the law state?
If we load up 4 wheel drives and find our own place thats not pvt ppt, can we just set up and shoot? I've seen many unpopulated ares with natural back drops for safety on the way to AZ. I always wanted to pull off the 8 and blast some rattle snakes. |

The last time I was out there was right about the time this thread was posted or just shortly after. I'm not blaming the thread, but the word is getting out about the spot. I brought along four friends to the spot and we were in two vehicles. We got there just before 11am and caught a group just as they were packing up at the better spot in the area. As soon as we started unpacking, three carloads of people rolled by on three separate instances... I'm assuming they wanted to see if anyone was already set up at the good spot. By just after mid day, we heard about 4 other groups of people in the area and saw two jeeps go by in the direction of the otay truck trail.
Word is getting out about the spot. It is getting alot of traffic. Some of these people are bound to be pigs about what they shoot and how much trash they leave behind. It doesn't help to have the directions posted publicly. Not only can everyone who has access to the internet see them, but its rude to the people on this forum who actually use the spot frequently and clean up after themselves and cooperate with Ranger Funk when he asks us to not use steel core ammo or shoot trash. Myoconstruct may think he/she is doing a service to the Calguns community, who knows. In all actuality, this should have been kept to PM's. |

I have been going to this area for a little more than a year, but have never been to the destinations outed by the the above post. Good place to go, rarely see other, and the BP is usually pretty cool. The only bad part is that it is hell and gone from north county.
On another note, I was told by a friend, a guy at Parallax told him that he has been shooting at Orosco for the past few weekend. Not certain if it's been reopened or if he's going on his own will while still being closed. |
