I just picked up a Rem 700 .300 win mag and I want to find a decent 1,500 yard stretch in the desert where I can legally shoot.

If anyone knows of such a place, I'd appreciate the info. Thanks!

How much elevation do you have built into your mounting system?
How much elevation does your scope have available from your 100yd zero?

Man, I JUST got the rifle. Now, I have to set away some funds for the glass. But, to answer your question, I'm not sure what I'll go with

Well, to shoot to 1500yds, you are going to need 50 MOA of elevation.

The most common rail you will find with elevation built-in will be 20 MOA.

Here is a quicktarget pass for a 300 win mag:

Code:
 Tabular trajectory data at Non-Std. Atmosphere
 Gunsite altitude : 3700 ft.
 Air density      : 0.072982 lb./ft³
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 Gun / Ammunition : .300 Win. Mag.(W)
 Bullet           : .308, 190, Sierra HP MatchK 2210
 Bullet weight : 190 grains or 12.31 Grams
 Muzzle velocity  : 3102 fps
 Crosswind speed  : 5 Mph
 Ballistic Coefficient(s) (G1):
 C1=0.524@V>2100 fps;
 C2=0.516@V>1600 fps;
 C3=0.506@V>0 fps;

 Optimum trajectory information :
 Optimum sight-in range (X) = 235 Yds.
 with max. ordinate above LOS at range (M)= 140 Yds.
 and max. point blank range (P)= 273 Yds.

 Sight-in clicks, 1 click = 0.915 cm/100 yd. or 0.36 in/100 yd.
 Height of sight above bore axis = 5.0 cm or 1.969 inch
 Gun is zeroed-in at 100 yds,

Look closely at the mounting system and scope to be sure you can get that kind of elevation.
Most common Leupold MK4 scopes will only have 30 minute of elevation so you will need at least 30 more in the base.

Learn to read wind.
Get a serious laser rangefinder (usually $3K+ to get you past 1200yds)

Ran,

He isn't as SERIOUS as you at this point... he just throw out the 1500yds question WITHOUT know WHAT he will be getting himself into...

lol

ShooterMcGavin: go shoot some 600yds, then 800yds... then 1000yds first.... don't try to START from 1500yds.... you will be wasting ammo... they are EXPENSIVE these days...

To get back on track with the original post, you might want to start out by looking at: www.socalcamping.com/shooting/shoot_info.html

For BLM shooting areas, do a general search for BLM/Southern California. From there, you can link to the various BLM field offices.

Shooting on BLM land is often "iffy". Right now, most of the authorized shooting areas are open, but it's a good idea to get up-to-date info directly from the BLM field offices. Besides the fire season closures and restrictions, they will sometimes close or restrict certain areas without much of a warning (2 years ago, there were vast regions of BLM land restricted for recreational shooting, due to a "massive" amount of desert tortoises having been shot to death....even though the "massive" amount turned out to be only ONE!). You may need to visit the BLM field office(s) of your choice, to pick up current maps and current info (Some BLM land is leased to private businesses).

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm not looking to go out and think I'm johnny sniper who can shoot the wings off a gnat at 1,500 yards. I just want to set my rifle up to be able to do it. Of course, I'll have to start with less range and increase as I can do so accurately. I just don't want to have to buy another scope and rail setup later down the road.

I'll hit up the BLM offices and if I hear anything good, I'll post the findings here.

Slab City is a great place for this kind of stuff if you don't mind the long drive out to the Salton Sea. There was a military base built for defense in case the Japanese invaded the mainland during WWII. After the war everything war torn down to the concrete slabs and concrete storage tanks. If you have 4wd vehicle you can drive to the end of Tank Rd and setup along the small ridge and have miles of safe shooting with good visibility. I'm not 100% sure if it's state or federal land but someone I asked said it was state owned.

Last time I was out there we brought some tannerite and had a blast! We camped out there for 5 days and nobody bothered us about the explosions. The vegetation is so sparse out there that there is 0 risk for fire so tannerite and bonfires are no problem. One day was exceptionally calm and the sound carried for miles but it's near a bombing range so the random hippies and snow birds living on the slabs aren't phased by some little tannerite explosions.

If you do decide to go search for "Slab City" and read up on the history and the people who live there. It's an incredibly interesting place to visit.

Standard rifle range is 200 yds.. but remember to ask them about their "Long Range." It's there, you just have to ask.

Also, free stuff here that's very informative. If you input the correct data, the output is really close to reality. You can even format and print out range cards too. You can then secure them to the rifle stock or put them in your range data book for field use.

Finally saved up the dough for my glass and got a Leupold ER/T Mk 4 6.5-20x50mm FFP with the TMR. Great scope, love the FFP. I've got it zeroed for 100 yds for now, holding 3 round groups less than the size of a quarter. The scope's sitting on a Badger rail with 20 MOA rise and Badger Max-50 rings. The scope has 70 MOA elevation adjustment, so I should be good to go for 1,000 yd+ ranges eventually.

Looks like I'll be headed out towards Barstow next month or so. If I find a good spot to shoot decent distance on, I'll report my findings.

Take that 70 MOA and split it in half (half up, half down) and you have 35 left.
Then subtract 5 moa UP in order to get the gun zeroed and you have 30.
Then add in the 20 from the rail and you have 50 MOA of usable elevation.
Remember that as you get to the last 10 MOA of travel, that you will lose most of your windage adjustment so you really have a good 40 MOA of elevation if you choose to dial for wind or 50 if you hold for wind.
