Default Boat Tail 9mm Bullets

The only near 9x19 boat tail bullet I am familiar with is the Hornady XTP 147g. Anything else even close to this shape ? Yaeh, the image is huge. Feel free to re-size it.

I’m a brand new reloader and picked up some Zero 115gr JHP as a less expensive alternative to Hornady. The Zero 147gr bullets have a similar taper and shape to the XTPs.

Lots of 9mm bullets have a "bevel base". Its not quite as tapered, but they load easier than flat base.

Sorry to make assumptions, but generally when these questions are asked its really a flaring issue. If you're trying to do something unrelated to flaring, apologies in advance. Even flat base bullets will center and load well with a good flare.

The 147 gr bullets are “boat tailed” because they are so long. Case brass usually gets thicker towards the bottom. It allows the longer bullets to be loaded without causing the brass to bulge.

Thanks Tom. That makes a lot of sense and is helpful. I will pull a few and evaluate, but . . . . . . I used the crimp die so not sure if a flare will be evident. If my powder through die is set up correctly, shouldn't the flare be a given ? Big if I know.

Flaring is your friend, flare just enough so that the bullet sits in the case upright.
