Being as it never rains in California Southern California, The main use of an umbrella is to protect from the sun so a reflective makes more sense than black. Actually reflective makes even more sense than black if it is in the rain especially at night so you don't get run over by cars. Also because if it's reflective on the underside you could dangle a little light and that would help light your way and generally be much more visible.
But why not make a interior reflective umbrella also function as a solar oven? This would involve minor tweaking of the shape of the umbrella To focus on the food but will still be basically an umbrella for umbrella use. Could also serve as a photographer's reflector for those outdoor glamor shots lol. To me this seems like a no brainer and could sell for big money at REI et cetera. Maybe I'll mangle up some of my unused umbrellas and used some of that cheap cheap emergency survival blanket and some tape for a prototype proof of concept. Will also post this idea on 4 Chan /DYI/ shortly. |

3m glass bead reflection tape is awesome.
I have seen a few celebrities with reflective clothing to ruin paparazzi photos. If you can find that reflective material and test how it works after being folded 40 times- it seems like a solid concept.

Great tips, Herm
Maybe it would be a framework that would accept a cheap space blanket. I guess There would need to be some folds to get a dome shape out of a flat blanket without scenes but that doesn't seem to be a deal breaker. The extra material would be folds flapping around up on top but I guess that could be marketed as a stylish feature. |

Here in northern california the sun shines from the sky downwards towards the ground, not upwards from the ground. Maybe your idea will work in Australia since they're upside down?
