How many people have you had under your command?
Hey guys Marine here 09-14
I've always wondered if the amount of people I've had to have responsibility for was unusual. As a LCpl (E-3) I had a leadership of two fire-teams for base security (learned a lot making sure they were fed, watch times, weapons, ammo etc..) the other half was managed by a CPL(E-4). Later on I was given a reinforced squad of 28 when I was promoted to CPL (and back in my POG MOS). At the time most of our Sgts were retiring and we had a large gap between Sgts and SSgts so I had these guys for about 7 months. |

As an E5 SGT I was given two Intel Analysts.
Then I commissioned to 2LT into Quartermaster, and got a platoon of 30-40. Then I became company commander as 1LT and got the the whole 160 of them. Of which, my Company is about the same size of the Intel Battalion I left (which was headed by an LTC). My asset responsibility is north of $50 million (that's what really makes me nervous). I suppose these numbers vary largely by service and MOS type.

Army E5 was a team leader in iraq in charge of 4, stateside squad leader in charge of 9. Became part of a cadre for Cal Guard RSP and at any given month between 3 to 40 new recruits, but that was all temporary until they left for BCT.

I was a Squad leader as a LCPL E-3 for awhile (13-24)until I got E-4. Then I was a Platoon Sgt. as E-4 (25-40 plus) for a bit too. It all depended on when we got new NCO’s. Most of the time was spent as a CPL squad leader though, almost 2 years. When I was in (93-97) it was rare to find someone who wasn’t filling a higher ranking billet, I’ve heard it continues.
During draw down between deployments my platoon got down to 12 guys until we got our new boots in. I stood in for Platoon cmdr and even Company Gunny for short stints just because we didn’t have anyone else and I was highest ranking CPL. All very temporary. |

As a FiSTer PSG, 36, including babysitting the LTs. That number should actually go down when I pick up my 8, unless they give my diamond, then it'll go up to around 200.
However as the base defense NCOIC for all of Qatar and soon Bahrain will fall under us as well, I'll be responsible for the safety for probably a couple thousand people and hundreds of millions, if not billions, of dollars worth of equipment. Thankfully I'm not signed for any of it lol.

Highest I made rank in my 4 year enlistment was E-5. When deployed I was in charge of all E4 and under in the colonels PSD detachment which made up 9 joes. Back in the states I was in charge of maybe 4 dudes.

Our unit CDR slot is slated for an O-4, current CDR is an O-3. We are supposed to have 55 in our unit but are short and only have 39.

Yes, but you are highly trained individuals. Where as I have 160 and only a few have degrees. Quantity is not quality.

State of California via the Ryan Act (circa 1970) specifically made Physical Education majors seek an academic or administrative degree before assuming jobs such as Dean, VP or Principal of a high school. Why?
After WWII, there was a preponderance of ex-military who ascended from PE & coaching into positions of authority. Why? Experience! As shown in the posts above. Management skills including personnel, budgets, adherence to policy, working within a regulated environment, etc. So, instead of folks like yourself continuing to lead, California's school system proceeded to sally forth with a collection of academics at the controls. Cause/effect. Thanks for your service to all and... Soldier on.

It isn't how many you lead, it's how you lead. I had an admin department as an E6 with 35 people under me in different offices.
