Once notified that it is ready for pickup, you can go in on the designated pickup days without an appointment.

Anybody have experience renewing after expiration, but within the 60 day grace period? Things had been crazy at home and work (essential workers get no rest), and I let my permit expire. I’ve now done all training and submitted, after expiration but within the grace period. Has anyone else don’t this, and did it effect your turn around time? I also saw on the site that the CCW unit is going to be closed on the 18th through the first of the year.

You are welcome. I broke that timeline out in my schedule noted in post 5000. It was from 20 NOV to 1 DEC, which was across the TGiving holiday.

Thanks again. Just trying to estimate if I will be issued my permit before Dec 18. I submitted the livescan on Dec 2 and finished my training certification and uploaded final docs on Dec 6. Seems like I may make it.

There is no process at present - modifications other than address changes are done at renewal only. Too much other work for them to handle these.

However, if you have SOLD one, you might email and ask what the process is to REMOVE from your CCW.

I got my final approval today, literally right after the last possible pickup time before the CCW office closes until next year. So I guess I've got to wait another month before I have an opportunity to pick it up. My timeframe has gone like this:
Applied: June 8
Interview: December 2
Live Scan: December 3
Live Scan approved: December 10
Classes: December 12-13
Final approval: December 17
First available pickup date at this point: January 12

The actual process has gone by very smoothly, it's mostly just been me waiting for an interview. I probably should've scheduled the classes right after the live scan instead of a week later honestly.

got approved yesterday. looks like they are closed but still working. i received an email that they needed additional documents. submitted about 1130pm and was approved at 730am the next day.
very smooth process compared to before. i've been in it since march but only reason it took this long is because i changed my initial appointment when i found a sooner one but then they shut down and rescheduled which put me in October.
how do i schedule a pick up day? they only sent me the hours available for pick up and said to wait at least 24hours before picking up.

Yes i just did, and had to even submit additional paperwork and was approved this monday during their office closure. Office reopens Jan 11 for license pickups.

On a side note, they used to accept utilities bills with both a PO box mailing address & street address with a DMV printout of both. Now they only want the street address. What a PIA.

So I've searched this thread but didn't find the answer I was looking for. My permit expires the first week of April and this will be my first renewal. I will submitting my renewal 45 days in advance as suggested by Sac Ccw website. My question is how early can I do the qualifications or when should do it? Also when should I upload the cert so I can minimize the loss of time in too early of renewal? I remember reading someone doing this so that he wouldn't lose out on some time on his permit. Should I upload the cert when I submit the renewal application and just call it the day or wait a few then upload it to minimize losing time on permit? Thanks in advance!

Qualifications are good for 6 months.

In Oct of last year, they were processing virtually overnight, so holding a final submission seemed reasonable. Here’s a post on it.

In Dec, TimtheTwin held his qualification submission to reduce lost time on the new license, but issuance dragged out for a few weeks.

The office has been closed since 12/18, and reopens today. No one can tell what the rhythm for issuance will be now, or if it will change in 3 months.

Do the training, and check here later to see how the process is running this year.

Was able to get in the first available day of the new year and pick mine up. I kind of wish it's was an actual card instead of a laminated folded up paper especially with how much the permit costs, but at least I have it now which is more than most Californians can say.

unless specifically approved by theAG, the cards are nothing more than a CCW ID card. The annoying, large, folded paper license is the bona fide, real license mandated under law. Carry it proudly.

(Actually, just stuff it in the back of the wallet. Unless you screw up, you’ll only need it when purchasing a handgun and wanting to avoid the second proof of residency and safe handling demonstrations.)

Well, I was trying to time out my renewal to lose less time on this round so I waited till today to submit (still had 15 days left). Wasn’t sure how they’d be doing after the holidays, but apparently they are on the ball. It took 20 MINUTES from the moment I submitted it online to the approval! I submitted an change of address, and it was approved. The email said to check my email for pickup instructions, but nothing has appeared in several days. Do I need to pick up a new CCW for change of address, or is the current CCW still good (expires in November this year)?

If I do need to pick a new one up, who do I contact?

Falls apart? They laminate it there- I fold mine in half and is sandwiched with 3 business cards/my DL and 2 credit card on outside wrapped with about 500 in cash- few 100s and rest 20s. Its about 1/3 of an inch thick.

I got pulled over for speeding 3 weeks ago on a bfe road in EL Do. CHP accepted my folded ltc card and told.me to be careful out there and let me go with warning.

I been folding a laminate card for ten years now- never "fell apart".

i used to do the same thing, had no issues. my current wallet has pockets just big enough that i was able to trim the excess plastic and slide it in.

Mine has lasted two years for a number of cycles. Put the thing in the back of your wallet and leave it there. The only time you should fish it out are when buying guns (second proof of residence and by-pass safety check) or interacting with LEO.

In Dec 2016, the Sheriff announced the transition of the program to the Permitium-supported program now in place.

At that time, the Press Release said, in part:

New ID Card
CCW permit holders will now be issued a hard plastic card that will be easily identifiable as a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department CCW permit. The new permit will also have the holder’s photograph prominently displayed, increasing both durability and security of the permit.

Since that time, the sheriff has blamed the delay in implementation on a state law modified effective 1/1/2017, which charges the AG with the responsibility to create the standards for a local-issued license. However, the statute also allowed local agencies to have their "card" licenses approved by the AG if the license met the standards of the statute.

26175. (a) (1) Applications for licenses and applications for amendments to licenses under this article shall be uniform throughout the state, upon forms to be prescribed by the Attorney General.
[...]
(3) (A) The Attorney General shall develop a uniform license that may be used as indicia of proof of licensure throughout the state.

(B) The Attorney General shall approve the use of licenses issued by local agencies that contain all the information required in subdivision (i), including a recent photograph of the applicant, and are deemed to be in substantial compliance with standards developed by the committee described in subparagraph (C), if developed, as they relate to the physical dimensions and general appearance of the licenses. The Attorney General shall retain exemplars of approved licenses and shall maintain a list of agencies issuing local licenses. Approved licenses may be used as indicia of proof of licensure under this chapter in lieu of the uniform license developed by the Attorney General.

(C) A committee composed of two representatives of the California State Sheriffs’ Association, two representatives of the California Police Chiefs Association, and one representative of the Department of Justice shall convene to review and revise, as the committee deems appropriate, the design standard for licenses issued by local agencies that may be used as indicia of proof of licensure throughout the state, provided that the design standard meets the requirements of subparagraph (B). The committee shall meet for this purpose if two of the committee’s members deem it necessary.

(i) Any license issued upon the application shall set forth the licensee’s name, occupation, residence and business address, the licensee’s age, height, weight, color of eyes and hair, and the reason for desiring a license to carry the weapon, and shall, in addition, contain a description of the weapon or weapons authorized to be carried, giving the name of the manufacturer, the serial number, and the caliber. The license issued to the licensee may be laminated.

It is far more likely that the Sheriff abandoned the local card license effort because his program had come under local scrutiny for costs, and the equipment/start up of the effort would have required additional resources. Additionally, any broader activity in the program (like a glossy, credit card license) would have received adverse publicity and put pressure on the program.

We can see this reluctance to step forward when the requirements for training were put into statute. Other agencies responded by publicizing training standards which amount to little more than firing less than two dozen rounds downrange. Sac Sheriff completely adopted the BISIS (State Standard for Security Guards) Course of Fire which mandates 50 rounds of practice and 50 rounds of scoring for each gun to be carried on the license. (This standard was established decades ago and devised around the qualification with a six-shot revolver. Yet, it is now applied to semi-autos and 5-round self defense weapons.) But, if anyone were to question the Sheriff on the standard, he can easily step behind the "state standard" shield, as he does on the hard card license issue.

I doubt we will see any further effort on hard card licenses during this Sheriff's administration.
