West Africa is a gigantic petri dish.
There are people there still rubbing sticks together to make fire. 3rd & 4th world tech. Volunteers to help them? Yes.
Bring them here for treatments? No.

Watched a couple interesting documentaries on Africa.
As many of us already know, Africa is resource rich in Gold/Diamonds/oil and so many other things.
The documentary showed foreigners (legally/illegally) overseeing the various operations to extract said resources, and of course these same folks amd others (missionaries, travelers) will return to home countries.
What is my point? They may already be bringing back Ebola and quarantine will have little impact or be too late.
I am fairly confident that our "frenemies" <--(as H.S. kids like to call them), are also looking at using Ebola as a weapon against us.

It's a very slight risk, and each day proves it is less of a risk -- ebola symptoms would have manifested between 2-21 days, and you're not infectious until those symptoms manifest.

As for weaponized ebola, um, no. Such an act would be treated as WMD, and the retaliation would be, well, look at 9/11. It's also a stupid choice to weaponize, because it's not airborne. The amount of genetic engineering to make it airborne greatly reduces the number of actors who can pull off such a feat and is a huge waste of resources -- there are already extant weaponized biological agents, so you'd just choose one of those.

Default Three Ebola Patients Have Fled Quarantine in Congo, Sparking Fears The Disease Will .

Quote:
Health officials in Congo are anxious to contain the country's deadly Ebola outbreak - which has already spread to an urban area - before the situation gets any worse. But controlling the virus may have just gotten tougher.

On Wednesday, the Doctors Without Borders mission in the Congolese city of Mbandaka announced that three Ebola patients there had left a hospital isolation ward and reentered the general population.

Patients leaving medical treatment in Africa has not been an uncommon occurrence in past ebola outbreaks.

New article from MedPage - https://www.medpagetoday.com/infecti...se/ebola/74562 (May require registration, but it's free; I registered so long ago I forgot my password and had to reset it today)

Quote:
The Ebola outbreak in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has now surpassed the country's outbreak earlier in the year, and officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) said they are are "even more worried" after visiting the affected communities.

At a press briefing at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, PhD, said that as of yesterday, there are now 57 cases, including 30 confirmed, and there have been 41 deaths -- surpassing the 53 cases and 29 deaths in the prior outbreak.

At the end of the article:
Quote:
Despite the use of the treatments as well as an experimental vaccine manufactured by Merck, authorities have struggled to contain the outbreak due to widespread militia violence in eastern Congo and community resistance to health workers.

At least 228 people are believed to have died, and the World Health Organization said last week that it expects the outbreak to last at least another six months.

I can't recall if I already mentioned this; I highly recommend the book "The Hot Zone" by Richard Preston, about the beginnings of the ebola virus; terrifying.
Another of Preston's books; "The Demon in the Freezer", about infectious diseases and smallpox in particular; also terrifying.

Default Butembo, Congo, reports ebola cases

https://nypost.com/2018/12/07/second...or-congo-city/

Quote:
Butembo, with more than 1 million residents, is now reporting cases of the deadly hemorrhagic fever. That complicates Ebola containment work already challenged by rebel attacks elsewhere that have made tracking the virus almost impossible in some isolated villages.
...
The outbreak declared on Aug. 1 is now second only to the devastating West Africa outbreak that killed more than 11,300 people a few years ago. There are currently 471 Ebola cases, of which 423 are confirmed, including 225 confirmed deaths, Congo’s health ministry said late Thursday.

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread to a city of nearly 1 million residents. There are now 30 confirmed cases and 15 deaths in the city of Butembo reported in the latest update provided by the World Health Organization (WHO). The number of cases in the city center is still low, according to Doctors Without Borders, but that number is rising quickly in more outlying districts and suburbs.

The outbreak, which has been going on since August, has so far resulted in 467 confirmed cases and a further 48 probable cases. More than half of the cases have resulted in death (including those of 17 health workers), while 177 patients have recovered, including a newborn baby.

Default Up to more than 1000 cases in this latest round

Quote:
The outbreak has been raging since August in the country’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces, which sit on the eastern side of the country, bordering South Sudan, Uganda, and Rwanda. The World Health Organization reported 1,009 cases (944 confirmed, 65 probable), including 629 deaths (564 confirmed, 65 probable) on Saturday, March 23.

The outbreak is the second largest of all time, surpassed only by the 2014 West African outbreak, which involved more than 28,000 cases and 11,000 deaths.

A World Health Organization director of health emergencies said aid workers may be missing up to a quarter of cases because people are refusing treatment.

This could mean the true number of patients is more than 2,700 – official records from Wednesday, 5 June, say 2,031 have been infected and 1,346 have died.

The outbreak has now been going on for around 10 months and is getting worse – week-by-week infection rates are far higher than at any time before March.

‘We believe… we’re probably detecting in excess of 75 per cent of cases,’ said the WHO’s Health Emergencies Programme executive director, Dr Mike Ryan.

‘We may be missing up to a quarter of cases.’

Don't seem to have learned much in the 30 years since the events in the show. (The at least partially-effective vaccine is nice, though.)

Health officials in Uganda have confirmed the country’s first case of Ebola stemming from a massive outbreak that has been raging across the border in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since August of 2018.

The World Health Organization reported Tuesday, June 11, that the case is in a 5-year-old boy from the DRC who traveled with his family into Uganda on June 9. The boy’s case was confirmed by the Uganda Virus Institute (UVRI), and he’s receiving care in the Ebola Treatment Unit in the western Ugandan town of Bwera, which sits at the border with DRC.

I've been watching this story for a while. There are a couple of youtube channels that have discussed this. One I like for a little different take on the story is Florida Maquis. Some might find it interesting and some will not.

That's pretty scary. Massively crowded conditions combined with a highly infectious disease with a very high mortality rate in a location with poor sanitation and health care.

To date, the WHO said its disease surveillance programs have picked up unofficial reports of at least four cases of suspected Ebola virus disease in Tanzania, including one death, as well as an unidentified number of contacts being quarantined in “various sites in the country.”

I wonder if the US descendants of slaves still wish it had never happened and they were still living there now. Slavery was a terrible thing but look at where they might be without it.

Default An ebola vaccine!

Quote:
The European Commission announced at the start of the week that it had granted a landmark marketing authorization of Merck's Ebola vaccine Ervebo. The vaccine has been in the works since the 2014 West African Ebola outbreak. It is now being used in the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo based on a "compassionate use" protocol.

Preliminary vaccine data from the current DRC outbreak suggested that Ervebo is 97.5% effective at preventing the devastating viral disease. It protected well over 90,000 people in the outbreak.

And now FDA has approved the vaccine -
Quote:
U.S. regulators have approved a vaccine to protect against the deadly Ebola virus, a crucial step in the battle against an infection that’s considered one of the world’s deadliest killers.

The vaccine, developed and made by Kenilworth, New Jersey-based Merck & Co., was found to be 100% effective when given at least 10 days in advance of potential exposure, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. The tests were conducted in Guinea, during a 2014 to 2016 outbreak.
