GMRS with Repeaters
School me on GMRS repeater capable radios. We've had numerous threads about Baofengs, but nothing really GMRS specific. If I don't want to be a Ham, but do want repeater capable comms, would something like the below radio fit the bill? A GMRS license is cheap, doesn't require a test and covers the entire family.
Thoughts? https://www.amazon.com/BTECH-GMRS-V1...ds=gmrs+radios . |

GMRS is just a frequency range. That baofeng you linked to can work with or as a repeater. So can the cheap UV5R's. There is a guy from Manteca that set up a UV5R in the Sierras with a solar panel, lead acid battery and antenna in a ammo can. It has been up there running for several years. He posted some videos on youtube.

A Baofeng UV-5R can do GMRS. If you get a UV-5R you can use GMRS (with or without repeater - if you can find one), 2 meter Ham (with or without repeater), & 70 cm Ham (with or without repeater); you can also listen to FM radio while waiting for someone to talk. It also has the ability to transmit at 5W (it's actually more like 3.7) which is pretty powerful for a GMRS radio. If you don't want Ham, just don't use it.

I agree with all of that. One asterisk on the final statement: You can listen to broadcast FM, GLRS, and the 70cm & 2m Ham bands - you cannot listen to HF, Shortwave, or anything AM.
