Default Big Berkey Water Filter - Not for California

I have been considering buying one for quite a while and decided to do so yesterday. Unfortunately, Berkey will not ship their systems to California (or Iowa?).

I did find an Amazon seller who will ship one to CA and was able to redeem a deal to get $50 off. I don't particularly care for Amazon, but I'll swallow my pride on this one.

The Amazon seller had a link 'for California residents' leading to an Amazon page with the standard prop 65 warning along with a long list of CA - specific warnings ranging from nuts to extension cords, power sanders, lead crystal glassware, etc., etc.

Waiting for my water filter to ship. This state has gone completely off the rails.

I'd love to have a Ballistol T-shirt, too. Might have to smuggle one in.

Great buy on the best table top filter maker IMO.

I was able to get a complete Berkey Lite some years ago under the 65 rule. No Big Berkey w/stainless tanks. Some were let through and some were verboten.

As long as you can get the filters you can improvise your own drip filter system too.

Clean fresh drinking water, using one of the best water filters in the market, is illegal in California.

Just drink diet soda.

You know , "for the childrenz".

( and if I'm not mistaken you can even get extra special Berkey filters to remove fluoride, if you're worried about your "precious bodily fluids". )

No fluoride in my well that I am aware of. More likely pesticides and fertilizer.

Just an added note about the Berkey black filters for my Berkey Light.

My first set of filters lasted well beyond the recommended swap time. https://www.berkeyfilters.com/berkey...er-filter-faq/
We went about 5 years on a 2 filter system and noticed the water tasted "off" after the last cleaning so we swapped in 2 new filters and got back normal taste.

I recommend buying spare filters. 2 to go and 2 backup units. If you need more volume you drill 2 more holes in your supply bucket and install the backup filters. 4 filter system gets more water quicker. Backup 5 gallon buckets will work too. DIY mods are simple. Get an extra spigot and food grade silicone sealant too.

Confused me as to why they won't ship to CA...I had to google it:

Quote:
This past November 2009, California signed into law AB 1953 / SB 1334 & 1395 / HSC Section 116875 and as a result directly affected the sales of all water filter and purification systems to the state. This revised “no lead law” as it’s commonly known, went into effect on January 1, 2010. Currently this law prevents any Berkey water filter from being sold to the state of California, and canvasses all Berkey products that comes in contact with water intended for drinking. This would include upper/lower chambers, all filters, and sport bottles.

The law stipulates that any “end-use device intended to convey or dispense water for human consumption through drinking or cooking,” as well as each of their individual components, materials and “pipe, pipe or plumbing fittings, or fixtures,” or flux, must be “lead free” as defined by California law. Under SB 1334, certification MUST be performed by an “independent ANSI-approved third party testing organization.” It appears that even if a product and each component of that product has no metal alloys and if a purification system actually reduces lead, under Section 116875, it must be be certified. An example of this would be the Berkey sport water purification bottle.... <snipped>...

Thank you, CA legislators, for taking our money from us to save us from filtration products used by Department of State facilities. We all could have died. Oh look, it's taxable revenue!

(OK, guys, they're distracted. Here are the same filters for DIY kits.)

Do these filters work well enough to make swimming pool water drinkable?

My thought as well. California now has a roster of not-unsafe water filers with all the hoops to jump through and expense that make statists wring their hands with glee.

This is mind blowing. I know Cali sucks from a regulatory standpoint, but ddin't realize it had gone this far. I so want to move to a rational state like Idaho, but am having a hard time with the finances. Once Newsome gets sworn in with a Super Majority, it may be more than I ca bear and I may have to leave, finances be damned!

Q. In the case of an emergency, can I take water from our pool and filter it with my Berkey system? Will all the chlorine be removed?

A. Yes. The Berkey water filter systems can make chlorinated pool water safe for consumption. However, keep in mind that such a use will cause the elements to wear faster. So, you should only do so in the case of an emergency

Did you buy directly from Berkey or a 3rd-party vendor?

My black friday order was canceled without a word from Berkey.

Berkey says... "Only sales of the following outdoor systems and products are now available to customers in the state of California: Sport Berkey Go Berkey Travel Berkey Berkey Light (With or without LED lights) Black Berkey Filter Elements Super Sterasyl Elements PF-2 PF-4 Filters All Replacement Parts. "
Pick one and hit the buy button.
I bought my Berkey Light from Amazon, so...

Sent using a long string and 2 used soup cans
