You bury a firearm - what do you include with it?
I can't seem to get to sleep tonight, so I got to thinking (which is a dangerous thing). A few days ago, there was a thread someone else made about how to best bury guns for long term storage, and now it's got me wondering.
Let's say the scenario is that there's a high probability of impending civil war, or mass riots (or zombies, if that's your thing) happening soon. You want to be sure that if all your firearms are taken from you or destroyed (by a looter, robber, gov't goons, house fire, etc), that you are able to dig up your firearm cache to re-arm yourself. But, if none of that comes to fruition, the cache might end up buried for decades, or forever, so you don't want to bury too much. You're not worried about basic survival items (food/water/shelter/etc) for this cache, this cache is purely for ensuring that you'll be able to sufficiently re-arm yourself fast and have everything you might need to make sure you stay armed. So, in preparation for this scenario, what would you include in your buried firearm cache? *Nevermind your preferred method of packing/preserving the contents, there's a different thread for that here. I'll start: -16" AR in 5.56, and Beretta M9. -Rifle BUIS and an optic (non electronic/non-tritium, probably just a plain ol' scope) -7 AR mags and 1000rds of 5.56, and 3 M9 mags and 200rds of 9mm. -6-magazine pouch for AR, and 2-magazine pouch for M9 -Rifle sling, M9 holster -Large and small screwdriver kits (including hex/torx) -punch tool (for retaining pins) -needlenose pliers -AR small parts kit + extra bolt -9mm and .22 boresnakes -Rags -Gun solvent, oil, and grease -Toothbrush and Q-tips -Rubber earplugs -Trauma kit, in case the fight will be immediate, or you got injured on your way to your cache, etc.

A whole bunch of scrap metal all around the surrounding area wherever I bury this gun vault.
.... just in case someone with a metal detector forgets where the beach is. But honestly I'm personally not so much for burying something I might need at a moment's notice, even if it's my extra spare. Maybe if it's my extra extra extra extra spare I might consider burying it though. |

Theorizing the "what ifs" has some value. I'll play a "Neo American rebellion" scenario for sheets n giggles. American minuteman load out if you will.
KISS principle would dominate my choices. LBV to carry rifle mags/ham ht radio/blow out kit/snivel+ first aid Pistol belt w/G19/mag pouches w/4 extra mags G26 w/4 extra mags Pre-loaded pack w/clothes/boots/poncho/hat/MRE's etc. SBR'd AR15 w/home made can + A2 stock. QD'd ACOG and fixed sights + light Spam cans of Wolf 223 and 9mm 1 lb bag Big League Chew

Anyone here ever have to replace an AR bolt?
I worked with some armorer's, but that was during Clinton's ban of bayonet lugs, so I never thought to ask, and I wasn't an AR owner yet. |

It's rare to have to replace a bolt, usually you can fix whatever problem it has after figuring it out. But when seconds matter, and you don't have time to tinker with your bolt to figure out why it's making your gun jam, it's a very quick and easy way to get back into the fight. An entire BCG is even better than a bolt, but it's also bigger, heavier and costlier.

I'm 53 and I doubt I'd be able to dig a ditch and survive. Let alone having to dig it back out again when I'm 63!!!

The gun/guns, mags, ammo and a few ounces of gold and silver. In a water proof case.
This may or may not have already been done. Best caveman

Spray up with lube and put in bags. Suck out as much oxygen as possible to reduce oxidation.

Impending civil war? Well, I'd want to get my family away first, so burying my stash would not be ideal, but since we are speaking of *ideal/imaginary* scenarios to help you count sheep, here my list:
-SCAR 17 with 6 total loaded mags, 500 rounds separately sealed per 100 -Glock 17 with total of five loaded mags and 500 rounds, also sealed. -IFAK/meds -MRE -fixed blade knife -vacuum sealed roll of TP (the good stuff) -one bottle of bourbon -spare socks/clothes

Question: Under what (hypothetical) conditions would the need to bury firearm(s) arise as opposed to simply keeping them on the down low?

Never understood the big ammunition stockpiles for this scenario. Of course you can never have too much, fair enough.
But if you shoot a few hundred rounds I’d hope you at least took out a couple and could swipe their ammo, weapons and supplies. If they’re govt goons they probably have NATO ammo. Think I’d have a combat load or two with each and diversify into separate caches far apart. |

I like your idea of caches very far apart. Like, hundreds of miles apart, in case you need to evacuate the area. Put the second cache somewhere in the direction you're likely to travel in if you do evacuate.

Stash a shovel nearby if you want to be able to dig it up. I would include a good fixed blade knife. Maybe include an MRE - once you dig you'll be hungry.
If you're going to do this it may be worth multiple stashes: A "Combat" stash (like has been described here), and a small game hunting stash - a .22LR rifle, .22LR pistol, 2k rounds of .22LR ammo, skinning knives, whatever hunting gear you use (antlers, calls, decoys, Etc.) |

To get rid of the oxygen just drop some dry ice on top let it sit for a while then seal it. No need to vacuum it out.

For a true prepper, burying firearms seems like the best way to keep and safeguard a weapon. There was one house another team located found during the search out in Butte County. It was easy to tell it was a prepper. Yet everything was destroyed. You could make out a small collection of AK-47's. Only the receiver was distinguishable. Ammo cans are interesting when they blow up. Almost like art work. Very interesting to see a blown out ammo can. Food cans and all of the supplies were turned into garbage, yet was interesting because you could tell it belonged to a prepper. At 2,000 degrees, seems like no safe will be fireproof. Also, underground septic tanks melt and turn into a nasty hazard. Tree roots keep burning underground. Now with firestorms as the new norm in rural areas, a decent deep underground bunker may be a good option to insulate those types of threats (basements won't work and can attest they are just another ash zone, even when fortified). Yet, make them deep and away from trees and structures that burn. The problem with these fires is that they burn very hot and for hours which give off a lot of heat until all the fuel is gone. Absolutely nothing is left. Don't ever use as a fire shelter though. You will die from the heat and loss of oxygen. Just get out as fast as you can and have a pre-planned go bag. People, animals and photos if you have time. These fires move very fast and are quite violent.

That interesting, thanks Mopar. I was actually thinking about what would happen to a buried cache in a fire, it sounds like unless it's in a field away from trees, it might too get destroyed. Good to know.

This why I've never thought burying a gun cache is a great idea. What if circumstances push you away from your cache site? Too many variables to suit me.

You need gun , ammo , food , water , first aid / trauma kit , bottle of booze , and smokes ( you would be surprised what you can trade for ).

Probably wouldnt bury too
Much valuable stuff in there, id bury stuff you are ok with losing if you cant get to it or its discovered by someone else. Maybe a low cost shotgun, some ammo or marlin 30-30 with some ammo and a revolver in 38/357. Good guns that dont require the mags to function. What if the mags were damaged while buried, now your guns dont work. A 3030 can be used defensively and for hunting all the same and is fairly light. I like Semi autos, but you will always run out of Mags before you do Ammo, and if all your guns rely on mags (accessories) then you are screwed. |
