Yeah, I have been trying to figure out the logistics of all of this without just having one HUGE Back-packing bag. I'm thinking the smaller Falcon bags would make sense as a bare bones bag that I will keep with me (in my Jeep at least). Something I could grab and hike home without killing myself (or possibly use for the short term). Then having a larger bag at home. I may regret my current thinking once i have ALL the items on my list. I MAY wish I would have gone with a modular setup so that I could have the ability to carry EVERYTHING myself.

But, in all reality, I'm either going to be at home or work (or on my way to either) when/if an event happens. I live in the middle of the suburbs and work even deeper into the city and it would be at LEAST an hours drive to get to any kind of liveable wilderness. So, I look at the Falcon type bags function as something I can get to my House to get my other bags. At that time I/we will have to decide whether to stay home or leave. Either way, it will NOT be on foot at that point.

Obviously there COULD be an event that would require me to hike home from work (10 miles). In that case, I think the falcon size case would be perfect. If we were forced to hike somewhere from there, I can always carry the larger pack and have my wife carry the smaller one.

Sure.
My "big pack" only leaves home if I leave for 4+ days.

Default MRE's from MREdepot

I saw that a few folks have purchased MRE's from MREdepot.com and put them in their emergency kits. This store doesn't sell any military MRE's, they sell ones that merely look like military MRE's - called Menu C MRE's.

Originally, these MRE's were thought to be the best civilian MRE's on the markets - they were almost like government MRE's in terms of completeness, nutritional value and packaging.

However, there have been some substantial complaints about missing content from these MRE's.

Though MREdepot.com advertises that each meal is between "1350 and 1600 calories" some folks are claiming that missing items have reduced the caloric value of these meals below 1000. If this it true, then owners of Menu C's might not have as much reserve food in their kits as they think they do.

Apparently this problem has been exacerbated by the difficulty of reaching anyone at MREdepot.com. Complaints made in October an November of 2008 appear to have been addressed by the company, but cases from the same production lot (1/16/08 mfg date) are still being shipped out, and at least one person has recently posted complaints about missing items.

This situation has resulted in MREinfo.com (an independent information-only site) to post a warning to prospective consumers of Menu C MRE's.

I will be receiving several cases of Menu C's from Mredepot.com soon, and will inspect at the contents of one case completely to see what, if anything, is missing. Just wanted to chime in with this info - the nature and purpose of the MRE makes problems like this difficult to detect until its too late.

Great looking bag just ordered one as well, free shipping for CalGunners too!

Just read this entire thread, took me a few hours but was it good, got me thinking a lot and I've started to prepare something as well. Great ideas all around, I will try to contribute something as I'm putting mine together.

Yep, depending on what you already have, it can be a long (and expensive) process. I think it's worth it though.

I noticed, as I searched through posts on the first few pages, that nobody mentioned toilet paper or soap. Eeewww.

Now, I know the, "If you hold in your turds for a long while, it comes out clean." tactic, but what if you get diarrhea? The chances of that are higher due to drinking bad water or food.

And soap can help kill or get rid of bacteria that could make sick or infected. Camper's Soap is perfect for a BOB. You can wash dishes, your body, hands, hair and even brush your teeth with it. It's also non-fragrant so it wont attract insects or animals.

Toilet paper can easily bee stored in a BOB. Just take out the inner roll, and fold it up and place in a zip-lock bag.

Oh, and a Boy Scout Handbook and Pocket Ref Book are two of my "must haves" for any survival/BOB kit. Even if you know how to do must things in a BSH, it's still great to have one. Also, I keep steel wool, too. I might need to start a fire with it.

See posts 101, 102, 113, 114 and 115 on toilet paper and soap.
Baby wipes, besides their usefulness on one's behind, are also good for the paws. Hand sterilizer was mentioned, too, since hard soap only works with water, and that might not always be at hand

Nice settup, you should add a bunch of glowsticks. They really come in handy.

McNett Smart Suds Scent Free Camper's Soap is a good idea, too. I'll replace the soap bar in my big pack with it.

Just got my order from Valkyrie Tactical! That was fast shipping. I ordered on Wednesday and got it today Saturday. I like the bag. Looks almost identical to the Maxpedition version. Once I get all my stuff, I plan to get some input on here as to what should be in this bag that is ALWAYS with me.

I also ordered a Shamagh from VT. Now I've got to go out and let it soak a few times in a bucket to get the dye out of it.

Wow, you had a good day. I like your choice of firearms as well (I too have an AR and Tika T3).

As for handguns, be sure to look at the Springfield XD line as well. I'm not against the others, but the XD just FELT right to me.

Yea I definitely need to get to a range and see what feels right. Without having shot anything yet, I'm really liking the FNP-9 (or maybe 40 depending on ammo etc), but we'll see. Looking for something around $500.

It would be good if you put a "cargo net" up so the glass jars don't fall and break in an earthquake.

Something like this would work to hold everything on the shelf.

Good Job

I'm looking for a good large size pack. I can't seem to find one at a decent price that is large and extremely durable. I'd like something like this (the rifle carrier isn't necessary)

http://www.eberlestock.com/G4%20Operator.htm

I haven't been successful so far and I'm about to breakdown and shell out the $400.

Checked there. I was looking at the 5.11 Rush 72 but it looked a bit small.

Cryptkeeper the one I got it called the 3 day diplomat pack. its not as big as the one you listed, but depending on what you pack, that thing could be HEAVY. Mine is just for SHTF, so it won't see TOO much action (let's hope)

I might have to dump some of the stuff I had wanted to put in there and make it the bare essential, food, water, first aid and protection. I can throw the rest into a supplemental large duffel bag and use that as my extended pack.

Don't forget insulation and firemaking stuff. Hypotermia can finish people between 15 minutes and 3 hours.

I have read every single post in this thread and I must say I am impressed with the information to say the least. Popndrop, Cryptkeeper, Dark&Good my hat off to you guys for all your ideas. I have now realized just how unprepared my wife and I are but as of yesterday we are fixing that.

I have two suggestions and one question: I may have missed it but seems to me tie wraps would come in pretty handy in a SHTF situation, they make great handcuffs. Again in an extended SHTF situation; I found this Suture Kit & Surgical Kit for $49.00 at http://www.nitro-pak.com/product_inf...products_id=32

Now for my question I have looked and there are literally thousands of sleeping bags available have any of you waded through enough of the data to make any recommendations?

Lastly did anything come of the idea of creating local likeminded groups to support each other?

I did a lot of research on sleeping bags for backpacking and I highly recommend the North Face Goliath 0degree X-Long. Here is why:

- $180 good price for a 0 degree
- Synthetic, about 4lbs, and rolls up fairly small for synthetic
- Fits perfect as a 6 foot 3 inch guy with big shoulders
- Worked great when I was at 8000ft elevation in the Lake Tahoe wilderness with ~25degrees outside, and I get really cold when sleeping
- solid zippers, some may complain about them but they are very big and tough

http://www.rei.com/product/746539?cm...:referralID=NA

I highly recommend going to REI and laying inside the various North Face, Marmot, and others to determine the right shoulder size. I think I recall Marmot having really nice bags but did not fit my shoulders at all.

You don't have to buy at REI, but they are friendly when it comes to letting you try out their gear in the store.

Edit: I'm assuming you want a good mummy bag that is compact for a B.O.B.. Otherwise I've always used various Coleman bags for general camping.

zip ties have better uses than that they're great for making some types of shelter (the ones that require branches), for attaching additional stuff to your backpack, etc... but if you have plenty of paracord, zip ties are not vital. For handcuffing, you'd need the longer ones, and packing space and weight is very valuable, if you're on the move... Well, I have some short ones in my "big pack", because of their versatility, but they're too short for handcuffing. I won't handcuff much in a SHTF

Mine is a Marmot Arroyo 30 Degree Down Sleeping Bag. I still burst in a laugh every time I put it back in its compression bag - it's about three times the size of my fist.
As for the warmth, I slept in 30 degrees by the San Luis Reservoir (protected from the wind, but not from the cold), and I got sweaty. Of course, I had pants and my Polartec jacket on

Gentlemen

Thank you for the input on the sleeping bags it will certainly narrow my research down.

As far as the Zip Ties Dark&Good I agree with everything you said. They still might come in handy handcuffs if I need to handcuff my mother-in-law to a tree. Maybe Duct tape will work just as well.

But thanks guys for the input.

I have found that this seems to be the test for a good bag. If you get sweaty in anything above 30 degree weather, its a good bag. From there its all about how small it can be packed. I have a bag that I've had for maybe 15 years now, I can pack it in to a small duffel bag about half the size of a tight rolled regular sleeping bag.

For years, in my teenager chapter, I always tried to fold the sleeping bag in the most efficient way... then I realized that "compression bag" is just that
I don't fold it any more, just push it in full force

In this form, I can play soccer with it much easier.

Anyone care to share where they would go? In a natural disaster (of biblical proportions) or a SHTF where would you go?

I have given this a lot of thought lately as I wanted to create an evac plan for my wife and our grown children, I.E. where would we meet. I came up with three stages. Stage 1: is a location near my home at a park with water and trees for shelter. Stage 2: Since I am in Southern California I picked the Kern River as our next location. There is always plenty of water, fish, and game. It is rugged and as remote as you like. Stage 3: This location assumes the worst social collapse. I picked a spot in eastern Texas to meet, and from there we would make our way to some rural property my brother owns in Tennessee.

Oh and no I don’t mind telling anyone on here my plan. If I should run into folks off CGN we obviously think alike and can support each other. As for the others, I don’t think they are watching CGN.

Do you currently live in california, or how do you plan on going to texas with your nearest and dearest to you with guns/supplies/ammo??

On a side note, it nobody has mentioned it, get some gorilla tape and slap it in that BOB of yours. Gorilla tape is amazing and way stronger than duct tape.

Yes I am in California, my plan would be to drive as much and as far east as I could, from there it is on foot.
