What are people planning to do for water?
What are people planning to do for water?
Both short term and long term. I figure clean water is going to be the hardest resource to obtain and probably the most labor involved because of quantity needed and weight. As for the people with wells how are you planning on powering the pumps long term? |

Honestly, being in the high desert north of LA, I think most people forget that we're in a desert and that water is generally non-existent outdoors. I'm working up to having enough water stock piled on my property for family and farm animals for 30 days. I have a few 275 gal water cubes I need to clean up before I fill them. I'm also trying to convince the Wife to let me put in a fish pond, aka more water storage. If water still isn't available after 30-days the roads should be cleared enough to pull out and leave for greener pastures. But my hope is, the water company and Gov't will be mobilized at that point and we'll have airlifts of supplies coming in if its truly that bad.

It is by far the least of my worries. 2 wells, 6 acre pond and a flooded mine shaft that I can run a siphon out of from the back of the property.

My FIL has an old school windmill on his property that actually pumps water out of the ground.
Lots of those still around, especially in areas with lots of cattle. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk |

Short term, I have barrels that caught the roof runoff from the rainy season. I’ll use it to water the fruit and vegetable garden. We have a lot of bottled water and I rotate out the old stuff with new. I’m good for a month. That includes making a pot of coffee each morning. After 30 days I might have to break out the life straws.
My area does have a natural spring that flows through the neighborhood. I have a 12VDC fresh water pump that will run off my car battery and a couple of garden hoses to hook it up with. I can pump water into a tank in my vehicle and drive it home.

Yeah - self reliance (at least for the short term) is a good thing.
Don't wait till last minute and expect to get a case of water from a store. Key emergency source of water- 1. toilet tank 2. hot water heater (sorry no help for the tank less heater) 3. coffee maker reservoir |

I guess I'll have to sacrifice and drink from the pool. 10,000 gallons should last my family of 6...for...a year
I wonder what the neighbors will have in trade

You need to drain and refill it often or look into what's needed to make it safe to drink over the long term. Now, it would be excellent to use for sanitary needs and stuff like that which would save you using the good water you have stored. Also, if the power is out then your pool pump and filter is off and the top is open to the air, so have a large tarp to keep out bug and animals.. one dead rat in your pool could change the "I will drink my pool" plan.

Because we live in the City near the ocean, we have the potential for an unlimited supply of pure water. Therefore, before my water supply runs out I will set up my Solar stills, using a Fresnel lens, and water from the Pacific ocean, my pond, and the neighbor's pools. Between these multiple water sources we (my neighbors and I) should be fine for a while. (120 to 180 days+). The benefit is that the solar still does not rely on the power grid and under worst case, we can use the propane power to heat the water instead of the solar arrangement.

In our situation, we have developed a well on our land which is solar powered. Well produces at over 20gpm. The well pumps into two 3,000 gallon above ground tanks. If that source fails, we have several year round and a creek so I think we've got the water issue solved.

Howdy Neighbor, Like you I have plenty of stored water. I have also done the research and legwork to find and locate the springs that were once common knowledge. So I can always refill a barrel or two if my water runs out. When I replace my rain gutters. They will drain into a catchment system.

I've got a creek running through my property which feeds my pond. The head of the creek starts at a natural spring about a dozen miles away.
Between the start of the spring and my place are several campgrounds. My biggest fear is idiots upstream bathing in and using the creek as a toilet. Although I figure the locals will take matters into their own hands and "clear" the campgrounds of said idiots if they start polluting our water source. |

Wells run dry as well, Ours just did, the ag fields in this area are sucking up so much water that the table has dropped below our pump and can not recover. Looks like we are going to have to have a company come out and drill deeper.

We are on a natural artesian spring here. Pure water that tastes like heaven.
Additional stream that has run 24/7 for the last 45 years. 3 well tanks for storage and distribution, 30,000 gallon total capacity. 5000 gallon dedicated separate tank for fire department. Each home here has put in 5000 gallon reserve tank, mine goes in next year. Gravity fed and refilled from storage tanks mentioned earlier. My Rock pool with 30 foot waterfall holds apx 1000 gallons and personal spa holds 480... I think we're covered! This mountain side averages 12" of rain and you hit water at 17 feet...

Well torpedo. We have one in the garage in case the power goes out and the generator fails. Ours has coated stainless steel wire rope because it's 250' to the aquifer and a hand winch. Dont want a rope breaking in a pinch, and dont want to haul 10 lbs of water up hill that much.

I have about 160 gallons on hand for my son, 2 dogs, and other animals. With careful use that should last through most, short term potential problems.
However, if the problems persist, and the supply gets low, then I'm off to my brother's place in the Sierra Nevada foothills. He's got a well. |

The water district I'm in taxes a flat fee based on the number of people living on the property. It doesn't really work though because clearly the properties that are packing migrant labor in are not paying that fee.

I'm not worried, with the new water usage regulations moonbeam recently signed, water won't be a problem...unless you want to use some of it.
I'm just gonna take it from my neighbors allotment.

The boat at the dock in my backyard has a water maker...As do many of the other larger boats in the harbor. Catalina island has a large desalinization plant.
