Search for portable toilet on Walmart? Typically a 5 gallon bucket with plastic and toilet seat is the typical go to in disaster kits?

You don’t need running water to flush a toilet, assuming your drain/sewer lines are working and you have a toilet. I’ve used a 5 gal bucket of pool water to flush the toilet when our water was temporarily shut off. You can either fill the tank or poor it directly in the bowl.

A composting toilet might be your answer. Take a look at Wikipedia or other site for details. If going the composting toilet route, a five gallon bucket of sawdust set aside might be all you need to set up a temporary composting toilet out in the back yard until things return to normal or you need to find more sawdust!

Don't forget toilet paper. If sufficiently supplied, you can barter with that. Might even become a prosperous man amidst calamity?!

WAG bags are an alternative, but they'd only be a realistic alternative for a relatively short period of time.

A composting toilet would be a better long term solution.

Besides the obvious bucket and t.p., don't forget to stock up on antibacterial wet wipes, 90% alcohol , hydrogen peroxide, or some other type of disinfectants (both in liquid and wet wipes form) your hands that will keep you from wasting lots of drinking water / clean water.

If you're trying to break it down to the minimum of items needed...

I think it would be a 5 gallon plastic bucket from Home Depot, a foam pool tube noodle that's normally a kid's toy But you recut it in a way so it fits around the top of the plastic bucket, some strong black plastic bags (I'd recommend the new type that have Odor Control) toilet paper, wet wipes and some strong alcohol possibly even some of the highest proof drinkable stuff, so it has multiple uses. I'd suggest putting it in a spray bottle so that the waist is minimum.

You can put all the items above right inside the plastic Home Depot bucket and put a lid on it keep it all dry.

A shovel and some baby wipes....
For the lady, 5 gal buckets with toilet seat attached, and lids for when full.

$25 at Home Depot should take care of poop preps!

Kudos for thinking about this OP! Most people do not think about things like sanitation and such during a natural disaster scenario.

Kerosene
91% med grade alcohol
bags of cat sand
thick mil garbage bags to line a toilet or 5 gallon bucket
5 gallon buckets x3 minimum
1 pt spray bottles x2 minimum
1 gallon of Odo-Ban. This is important!
1 shovel
2 pr thick rubber gloves

Only used tp goes in a bucket with a lid.
P bucket gets a enough kerosene to cover the surface/top layer of P.
Line the bathroom *toilet with a bag and bombs away. Cover with cat sand as needed.
*or bucket as toilet substitute.

Clean P/tp buckets and gloves by spraying with alcohol. Odo-Ban spray refresh.
Dig a hole 25-50yds away from home and cover solids with dirt if possible to do so.
*Odo-Ban concentrate can be watered down to stretch the supply. Same with alcohol.

This sounds like a City Folks question...

I am on 80 acres with a well and a septic tank. If they were not usable, here in Humboldt I would take a shovel and duck behind a redwood tree to poo.. Otherwise I just water the redwoods...

I don't have a favorite tree, I just use one that is not too far from where I am at when the urge hits me.

That is the way that the local wildlife such as deer and bears relieve themselves, as seen from the piles of poo that I have encountered near my house.

Unless it snows here on occasion, then that would make for a "quick" trip to the trees! But I could write my name in the snow

One thing for sure........... you don't want to live on the bottom floor of a multi floor building when the sewer backs up.

When I built my septic system for the ranch I made it 4 times larger than it called for. As long as gravity still works, I'm good to go.

A composting toilet if you can afford it. About $1K and up.

If conditions involve worrying about sewage, they will likely be bad enough that food will be in short supply as well. Another word for waste or excrement is fertilizer. My suggestion would be to build a DIY septic tank (might be a good idea to build it now so it is ready) like described here https://www.wikihow.com/Construct-a-Small-Septic-System . You could even plumb it to the toilet in your house, but I would build a outhouse over the first barrel to save water. With some simple modifications and a slope you could build this with a much larger leach field and have it about 18" below the surface, then plant your garden in the leach field.

I built a system like this (I used 100 gallon barrels) to connect my RV to and it works great. I use the RV like a guest house (my parents once stayed in it for a month) and it has no problems dealing with the sewage.

I read about these people 40 years ago.

https://www.amazon.com/healthy-Hunza.../dp/B000HX3CBE

Their fertilizer is human waste. The book talked about their latrines that were rock lined, they use it and then shut it in for 12 months. The waste was benign after 12 months and free of pathogens, used to cultivate on the mountain slopes and the rock lined latrines also kept human waste from contaminating their water supply.

Interesting study and it has been done for 1,000's of years.

Late to this party but....
How big is your yard?

Rig up a bucket like a toilet. Cut the bottom off and make it so that it sits upright supported.

Dig a hole with a postholer as deep as you can get it. Put the toilet over the hole. Every time you poop, put a splash of dirt in the hole to keep down the smell. When the hole fills up, dig a hole a foot over from the last one and start all over.

You can do your #2s for quite a long time with this method. With enough of a yard, indefinitely.

I have a two compartment camping toilet like this: https://amzn.to/2S5e1w6

Don't fool yourself with the bucket idea, the only way to keep something like that sanitary is to dump it out every time you use it. These camp toilets have a separate tank that holds the waste, you it seals off the waste do you don't have fly's, bacteria and the smell.

Once a day dig a hole, dump it out and you're done.

I have a well and septic system. I suppose I could build a latrine over one of the hatches in the tank in order to conserve water from flushing toilets.

It would have to be secure enough to prevent pets or people from falling in, though. Many years ago, a toddler fell into an open tank just up the road and drowned. Horrible.

It requires a 20 amp circuit.

I'll bet that "flushing" this toilet is more efficient than flushing our regular water toilets.

By the time you factor what it takes to deliver the water to your house, then water to flush, and then energy to treat the waste.

Thinking about it, I doubt it for a second that this thing is more efficient!

If you're in an environment where you need a really low foot-print septic arrangement - it greatly helps if you keep any paper products separated from the system. Those are burned or otherwise stuffed into brush piles that are burned later.

See the book "Humanure" and you can get a composting toilet for $600 or less - or make one for even less.

Same situation. When the power went out, I had two five gallon containers of water on the porch, one for the toilets and one for drinking. If you want to conserve water, put the minimum amount in the tank to flush down waste. Maybe bag and burn toilet paper?

I had a "Honey Hole" for dog waste - it work out well. Basically just a pit that composted the waste.

There is a reason all British food was boiled.

Boil cabbage until it can’t kill you

Boil potato’s until they can’t kill you

You grow crops in night soil - up until 100 years ago here

Handling waste is where many will get sick
Tieing up bags from the 5 gallon bucket.

Better to have a seat over a hole. Cover with enough soil to keep fly’s away

Flys landed in open sewer pits in the gulf war and on dead bodies

Fly lands on you and you are down with the squirts.

In Mexico, they would flush the toilets once a day down in Labuffadora. This was 87-88

So the waste water you generate cleaning plates and utensils- pour that into the tank to flush the waste down.
