Default Slugging The Barrel

I have an old Webley 455 revolver Mark 1 (1887-1894). I have been shooting it for years with .453 wadcutters... In the search for accuracy I've decided after owning it since the 60's that I really should know what the bore actually is, they are reported to range from .452 to .455.

Rather than pounding a chunk of lead down the breech, can I just fire a shot into 4 ft of water in my swimming pool and mike the recovered bullet....

Interesting idea.

The water may deform the bullet. It can open up a hollow point, right?

Not deformed at all?
Photos of the bullet please.
No photo of the pool. Don't want to be jealous of your backyard range.

Won't know unless you try it. I do suggest somewhere deeper than 4' just so you won't deform the bullet or hit bottom.

The water will expand the bullet, giving you a false diameter.
You check bore dimensions with a dead soft slug.
The easiest source is a blackpowder round ball the next caliber larger than what you are wanting to slug.

The barrel should be cleaned and oiled before you push the slug through.
It's not difficult to push it through the barrel.
