Default "Student Group has Positive Take on Guns"

This seems like a very good idea. At San Jose State University students there have formed a "Students for Firearm Safety" club on campus. Over 100 members and growing. They teach about gun safety, go shooting together, have a table up at campus events, etc. It's a non-partisan, non political group they maintain but their existence and actions are a political statement. They teach and promote gun safety and shooting. in doing so they counter fear mongering, ignorance, and the opinion that everyone who has a gun is a threat to public safety.

This kind of club can grow and spread and should.

This article is from page 1 the local section San Jose Mercury News of 9/10/18

Pressreader is not user-friendly.

Anyway, I suppose that school club is better than nothing, but needs to grow a pair.

Quote:
He said the club is all about “spreading the positive gun culture message here in the Bay Area.”

That message is in no way political, insists Miller, who is now studying to be a police officer. “We are not promoting any policy one way or another,” he said, adding, “We are not affiliated with the NRA.”

Instead, “it’s a sports thing, it’s a hobby thing,” club president Reddy said.
Firearm ownership is more than a sport and a hobby. And yes, we should be promoting a policy and shouldn't fear being affiliated with the NRA, who advocates safety.

Quote:
A heated exchange over guns was exactly what motivated Miller to start the club in the first place. After getting into a debate with his criminal law professor over guns last spring, Miller noticed lots of students approaching him after class saying, “I didn’t even agree with everything you said,” but “you argue really well.”

They were interested in trying out his guns, so Miller started going “shooting with 15 students,” which from “word of mouth” turned into 60, and soon after hit more than 100.
Somebody starts something and a ball gets rolling. More doors are opened for discussion and debate. No chapter of the NRA exists at SJSU. These folks set up a club that encourages shooting and gun safety. It grows. I'm for both gun safety and shooting. Maybe we look at what it is...rather than what it's not. I can take it for what it is and see what happens.

Very cool! Nice to see anything firearm related expanding in our state. Seems like it is typically contracting, so this is great.

I really like this idea. Specifically because hostile political discussions alienate both sides. This has the potential to recreate a healthy culture of firearm savvy young people, whether they choose to own firearms or not. Increase knowledge, decrease fear.

Could probably set them up as a funded club at UC if you called them Karl Marx Schuetzen Verein.

Exactly. That’s one of the big reasons the club was founded.

We have an amazing amount of students that are eager to learn about firearms. Even have a solid amount of faculty support, especially where it counts.

A gun is a tool without a mind. It does what ever the person holding it tells it to with their hand. My father was a WWII First Sgt. and he drilled gun safety and muzzle control into me! You NEVER point the muzzle of a gun even one you believe is unloaded at anything you are not willing to shoot and destroy or kill.

It never ceases to amaze me how many times I see African hunting shows where the hunter crosses the back of the professional hunters back with their muzzle. If my father saw me do that he would have literally kicked my butt yelling at me to NEVER do that again. It makes me wonder how more professional hunters are not accidently shot by their IDIOT clients!

Excellent work. One of my biggest gripes about 2A orgs is the focus on politics and money.

They put the cart before the horse with this mentality. A right unutilized is a right that no one will care to protect.

To save the 2nd Amendment we need to save and promote the shooting sports.

Adeodatus, I have a question regarding the gif in your posts.

Did that girl really muzzle sweep those guys, or was this staged? It's hard to tell.

It's kinda funny, but at the same time, it shows how 'tarded some people can be.

Inquiring minds want to know.

Keep up the good work you and your group are doing.

Just keep diplomacy, tact, safety, etc in mind with every interaction. Don't dip into Matt Best / Dan Bilzarian / Black Rifle Coffee "**** em if they don't like it" mentality.

Think of it like cybersecurity - the enemy only has to get it right against you once. You have to get it right every single time.

I had to live and breathe that way while at SJSU just to make this club a possibility. After 1.5 years there I had my shot and I took it. At first it was impossible but things perfectly aligned and I am still surprised I was able to pull this off.

Nice job guys, I graduated SJSU college of engineering in 2013. Go Spartans!

I used to rock the fvck out of gun shirts on campus maybe you saw me, 6’3” big teeth, white guy, kind of gangly...haha. I used to argue with my liberal professors ALL THE TIME. I had to take an ethics class for elective, I used to hammer that commie lib. He actually gave me and A, not that I didn’t earn it, but I was the only one who would challenge him and have a difference of opinion.

I remember one time in an HRTM elective I beat all the Asian kids moving stuff with chop sticks, while wearing an NRA shirt. I was all, ‘trigger finger discipline...’

I promote this but it is disheartening because I remember going to college and about 99% of the students already have the mindframe that guns are nothing but tools to kill. In fact, we had to write a 1000 essay and share it online about if "Teachers should own guns to protects classroom". I read every single essay and all of them already came to a cognitive conclusion that guns are evil and they are tools to kill. Another thing that is disheartening is I see a lot of new gun owners that buy guns based off a video game/movie. What happened to the 2nd amendment ,how about self preservation ,and the right to bear arms. It's a mix crowd and I can see this club causing problems because of th left not agreeing and not willing to bother to understand. Keep in mind CA has a law that if someone deems you incapable of owning a firearm they can report you and cause more problems for you. I'm happy for this club but if you do the math 100 students being pro gun vs 40,000 being either non pro-gun /pro-gun is a bigger issue. Of course I am thankful we have a club like this, perhaps it can be a new stepping stone to moving forward but now your mixing politics with your education and that can hold you back as people already judge you not based on your personality but your appearance from the outside world especially here in college. I rather keep the gun clubs separate from my academia lifestyle . I do remember in 9th grade we highjacked an empty booth and tried to make a "Strip Club" this was back in 1999, I'm sure now I would have been suspended or expel for my satire actions...

Thanks a ton for the support guys!

If anyone is interested in helping the club we would highly appreciate any donations of things for us to pass out or raffle off as prizes. Little things like ear pro, eye pro, cleaning mats, gun locks, etc. Little things like that can go a very long way. If that interests anyone just shoot me a PM!

Firearm ownership is more than a sport and a hobby. And yes, we should be promoting a policy and shouldn't fear being affiliated with the NRA, who advocates safety.
On a college campus this is a big step, maybe you keep your pair to yourself and do something like this in your sphere of influence.

I'm a huge proponent of apolitical gun activism. I just got done posting about how "Guns are fun" is way more impactful than "Guns kill fewer people than cars!" or "SHALL. NOT. BE. INFRINGED." so props.

I'm between jobs at the moment, but as soon as I get back to slinging code I'll buy you guys a whole box of earpro to pass out.

I know it's probably too late, but you might consider a pivot to something like "Students for shooting sports and firearms safety" or something like that. Bad example, but my point is to emphasize the fun aspect along with the safety aspect, because unless you're ROTC or something what's the point of all the safety? It's so you can do fun stuff without hurting yourself. I bet you have a rock climbing group, and I bet it's not called "Students for Correct Belaying Technique."

Right on with that. It's all about hearts and minds.

Thanks for being willing to donate!

We focus on everything related to firearms including a heavy focus on sports shooting, especially education on the different types of sports. The club name just helps a lot with having an extremely soft image on campus, which was necessary for me to pull this off. I'm currently working on trying to find some good guest speakers for sports shooting at the moment. Would love to have Chris Cheng come talk but I believe he lives in SoCal.

Happy to hear this!

I'm tied-in with the Cal Poly Marksmanship Club as an alum. The Cal Poly Marksmanship Club has been going since 2014 and it's still going strong.

Check out the club's FB page: https://www.facebook.com/CPMarksmanship/

Hopefully the existing clubs (SJSU, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Gaucho Tactical) can get together and do something fun. We have a great range right in our backyard and would be happy to host.

It's no secret Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are rivals on the sports field, but one club on Cal Poly's campus is proving the two schools can have some friendly competition.

The Cal Poly Marksmanship Club invited UC Santa Barbara students to a practical shooting match in San Luis Obispo on Saturday.
Never a dull moment with these kids! So if you're linked to a local College/University please get involved. You'll probably see a student at the range sporting something from their school. Ask them if they have a club on campus. There are grants that the school can get through the NRA and NSSF. We've arranged dedicated range time at our local range (along with a Club Safe and Club Guns) and I help get the students prepared for the weekend matches.
