Within the month I will be getting my Kentucky driver's license and officially changing my state of residence. I've already started the paperwork to get my first suppressor and am looking forward to ordering ammunition by mail.

We bought a 70 acre farm near Cynthiana, KY with 30 acres of woods, a pond and pastures.

As I always mention the weight you feel being removed from living in the oppressive state of Claiforniastan is like a breath of fresh mountain air for the first time. Congratulations on making the move to freedom.

You're gonna need a tractor with a Brush Hog and a riding mover.

Congratulations, looks like a little slice of heaven!

That works for the lawn but if you want to hunt deer and maybe turkey, you need a Brush Hog to clear some lanes in the unimproved area so you can funnel the traffic.

I have tractor catalogs and am looking at a bush hog, loader, blade and hay spears because I have to maintain 1/4 mile of gravel driveway and have about 30 acres of woods that I want to develop with deer plots, while the pastures will be left for hay.

I've arranged with a young neighbor who's going to cut and bale the hay on a sharecrop arrangement. I plan on running stocker calves and selling grass fed and finished beef for the farm credit.

Keep a close eye on what you spend on equipment, parts, and fuel. The same with your young neighbor on what he gets and what you keep.

We've been doing the same with grass hay for horses. We and 2 neighbors hire a guy to cut the hay as a swather is not a good investment for how much we all cut. We then rake it ourselves, bale it, and sell what we don't need for our horses on Craigslist. As far as finances, the best money we spend is for a CPA who specializes in farms.

OP, don't forget to work on your hillbilly accent. You don't want to be pegged as a Hollywood boy.

I lived 7 years in South Carolina (all my kids were born there), I can slip into a southern accent at will.

Driving there Monday to set up my daughter and grandkids in the house while they are getting a house built on the field on the left side of the property.

I'm officially changing my address also since I'll be staying there as much or more than our California house while we sell it. I've got an appointment to get a Kentucky driver's license, registering to vote there and registering my truck there.

I wonder if they'll let me get a personalized license plate that says "IH8 CA"

Like that plate is still available.

You need IH8 CA2 or 20 or 50.

Congratulations. Rural living is the best in my opinion. The peace and tranquility of being surrounded by nature instead neighbors is worth every trade-off. You property seems to hold all the attributes of the perfect country home.

Beautiful, congrats! I love Kentucky. My family roots are from eastern Ky. I fly back and go camping in red river gorge every year still.

Default Yet, we are closer to our neighbors than when we lived in the city

We were on good terms with our neighbors in CA, and were friendly, but never did anything socially with them.
