Default Father's (In-Law) Day Handgun Ideas...

Suggestions for a Father's In-Law gift...

He's in his early 80s. For range mostly.

.22 revolver - see https://www.usa-gun-shop.com/best-22...sale-feb-2022/ for some suggestions.

And, have your wife purchase it, and use intrafamilial transfer - no FFL needed between 2 CA residents - to hand him the gun. Parent-child works; in-laws do not.

As noted above - a .22LR revolver, or perhaps a cushy-gripped .38Spl revolver (not too small - no J-frame size)

A couple of boxes of ammo for his favorite range guns and a trip to the range for a day of shooting.

Something that you want in the inheritance.
Sorry....

I would get him a case of ammo for his favorite gun, a trip to the range and a nice lunch afterwards.

An FFL isn't required for wheelguns between parents/child?

The above suggestion where wife purchases it and then uses the Intrafamial transfer nails it, because in-laws don't work.

Wife/husband, parent/son/daughter, grandparents/grandchildren are the ones that work. No brothers/sisters, nieces/nephews, great (anythings).

No FFL needed. Just fill out the form and send it in along with the required fee. Also, pay attention as there is a field for an FSC number.

https://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/a...orms/oplaw.pdf

The recommendations of a .22LR handgun are excellent. Question is whether he can rack the slide if its a semi-auto, or smash the ejector, (which gets really sticky if fired a lot) if its a double action. If not, a single action revolver, (like the Ruger Wrangler/Super Wrangler or Heritage) work well.

What about the Ruger MkIV that is on the Roster now?
Or a SW 686 or Ruger in 357, can shoot 38 all day long.

Personally I would recommend a rifle rather than a handgun. Maybe a nice lever in 357/38?

Presuming both are CA residents, no FFL required for any gun transfer between parent/child, grandparent/grandchild.

CFARS or paper registration required; receiver needs an FSC.

Cannot transfer 'assault weapons' or 'large-capacity magazines'.

Hey my dad is in his late 80s and still shoots on a regular basis. He?s bought maybe a dozen or so handguns over the last couple of years and I can give you his experience on what works for him.

He does better with semi-autos than revolvers. He also does better with full size handguns.

The main issue he has are racking the slide. He can rack most slides if they are wide enough. Some guns that work for him include the Sig P320, the Walther PDP, and a Glock 19. He also has a Taurus 22, a Sig P322, a S&W 22, and a Ruger P22. He also has a Sig p365 in 380.

He has issues with some guns racking the slide. He couldn?t rack the slide on a 1911 or a CZ. He also has issues with the Shield EZ since the grips safety hits the web of his hand.

He lives in Georgia obviously the roster doesn?t apply.

I?d suggest having him try out different guns and see what works for him. That?s what my dad did and he?s been okay so far.

I would just be careful on assuming what he can and can?t shoot.

If you plan on presenting a firearm to him on Father's Day, it's too late. The DROS won't clear by the 17th. So the idea of buying and transferring has a bit of a glitch to it, not to mention that the cost of the gun goes up another $19 to process the intrafamilial transfer paperwork with DOJ.

You could provide photos of .22LRs available (Sportsman's or RifleGear websites can be used to sort for this) and present that with a question of which he would like to have. Then, take him to the gun store and have him buy it. (One of my favorite memories as a young man was when my Dad took me to a gun store and bought me my first new gun -- Colt Woodsman. Years later, I took him out and bought him his first Glock).

Some will raise the issue of a potential charge of straw purchase because it's your money buying the gun, but this is a gift and gifts are ok. Regardless, that nonsense can be resolved by either talking to the shop about what you're going to do ahead of time or simply giving Dad a gift card for the price of gun, ammo, sales tax and DROS.

Good luck, enjoy.

Oh, From a Geezer not too far behind your FIL, you're a good Son-in-Law.

Ammo isn't cheap, but based on some of the suggested rationales presented in this thread, I wonder if a full size 380 wouldn't be a good consideration? I figure they are soft shooting, and slide manipulation is generally fairly easy for a semi. This, of course, is only relevant if he prefers semi.

S&W Model 41 for a great FIL. If not so great then Mark IV. If only average SR-22.

Sportsman?s Warehouse refused to sell my son a handgun that I was paying for as a gift with my credit card as they claimed it was a straw purchase. I ended up having to DROS in my name and inter-familial transfer to him. Bastages.

Unfortunately, the language of the ATF FM 4473, Page 4, Instructions for Question 21a, pretty much ties the FFLs hands. A conversation with the FFL may persuade them to process the purchase but the instructions pretty much speak against that.

Which is why a gift card for price, tax and DROS is the solution.

The new on-roster Ruger Mark IV.

If you have a bigger budget, you can even pimp it out.

Ruger SR22.
Easy to rack, lightweight, fun plinker.

Other choices listed above if he is still strong and healthy.

If the giftee can pass scrutiny and doc requirements and does not drool and spit uncontrolablty then no problem with 4473. Some cops cannot do this .(LOL).

At 80 years old, this birthday boy just might be stronger or have a stronger will than his grandkids. I wouldn't assume weakling so fast.
