I have had a Helle Viking for a couple years. Good quality, and pretty nice craftsmanship. It's kinda more of a collector knife in my opinion, but I do keep it with me on hikes and when camping. I'll probably buy another at some point.

The blades on my Helle's are sharp, wicked sharp from the factory.
![]() I only have a picture of my Harding knife, I have other Helle knives. The factory picture looks better, my blade is so bright that it was hard not to have shadows of the thing. I also applied spar varnish on the handle, so it looks "wet". ![]() The laminated blade technology gives an extremely sharp blade, still have to be careful not to rust the edge. Norwegians have a reputation of being slow to change. The Scandi blade grind, and the blade shape, have been around in that region for thousands of years. And it works. I think it started because the blade shape was straight forward to forge and grind, but it stayed because it works. Helle knives are expensive, Norway is an expensive place, cost of living, etc. But the knives are well made and they will cut. Just find the handle you want. One advantage to wood is, if the handle is too big, you can reduce it with a file. The blades on the various models are all variations on the same theme. I think the four inch size is the most useful. I do not batton knives, I use a knife to cut. Knives are hard, cutting tools. I think using a knife to batton is stupid. If you want to batton, get the proper tool for it: ![]() ![]() |

I bought a Helle Eggen knife and it came out of the box (tube) as one of the sharpest knives I've ever purchased. I was impressed as I buy a lot of hand made custom blades which weren't as sharp.
I never used it, but still remember how impressed I was with the sharpness.
