Got my Technician Lic. about 14 years ago back in NY where I grew up. Right now just have an old HTX-202 2M handheld that has a dead battery. Actually looking for some repeaters in the area or some simplex freq. Also interested possibly in any emergency nets or programs I could possibly help with.

Is any one connected with a club in the area near Downey / Cerritos that would be interested in demonstrating amateur radio to a small group of Cub Scouts. This would help them learn about different ways of communication. PM me if you can help.

Class went well. I am now General command_liner.
Free Advanced class is coming in September.

Field day at Santa Ana promises to be nice. There will be a catered dinner
Friday night, plus food on Saturday. Setup at the fire training center will
have plenty of room and plenty of parking. RVs will be able to plug in, but
no drains.

Hi all,
KK6PE here in the 5 cities. Mostly use 2m and 70cm. I tend to lean towards commercial HT's and mobiles, though I do have a IC706.

Hope to hear y'all on Field Day

Is there a good handheld radio that would except an external antenna in a jam and take external rechargeables for shtf? Maybe one that can be chipped for extra features and is rugged and water resistant? Also it must not have a complicated menu system that requires a cheat sheet.

On last request it must be reliable and not have warranty issues. Rugged and not need repairs is the key.

Most of the handheld (HT) radios will accept an alternate antenna using the connector on top of the radio.

The tri-band Yaesu VX-7R is a waterproof (for 30 minutes) HT radio that should meet most of your needs. Most of these radios will run on a rechargeable battery pack. It's not hard to get a spare, plus a vehicle charger. The chargers aren't designed to allow you to transmit on a very low battery (wait until it charges). Also look at the Yaesu VX-3R as a cheaper dual-band alternative (and it can run on AA batteries with the optional battery case).

The Popular Yaesu FT-60R is a nice radio, but the main fault is the antenna uses a screw-on SMA connector. If you want to swap to, say a vehicle-mounted antenna's coax cable, you'd be better off with a radio that uses a BNC (push/twist) connector.

For SHTF, having an HT will be good for many uses. But it's output is only 5 Watts. Depending on your location, that might not be enough to trigger a distant repeater. Vehicle mounted radios usually put out ~50w which gives you lots more range (even in simplex radio-to-radio mode). I would get the HT and if it's something you use, work towards a mobile rig in your car or truck.

Thanks

Can you use a yagi antenna and do these radios use the full 5w on all freq's? Are these radios good at receiving the larger home based ham freq's if I was just monitoring their conversations during shtf for news?

Hams try to use the lowest power setting if possible.
1 it saves you power *especially when you are on a handheld and want to extend your battery life* and you arent wasting all that power when you can reach the repeater or person you are talking to already.

the handhelds usually only operate on 2 meter 440, my 8r has wide receive so it also acts like a scanner.

ill let someone else answer the yagi antenna questions as im not too familiar with them

The county where I reside has allocated emergency HF frequencies on 80 and 40, SSB. Yunno SHTF?

Are the repeaters solar panel operated or off the grid?

For those who do not wish to post your call sign, you can list what radio gear you have etc, and if you want people to talk to just say PM for call sign.

I am a Technician Ham Operator! passed my test tonight 7/17/09

Im in the process of studying for the last week or so and plan on taking the test this coming Friday.
I just placed an order for the new yaesu vx-8r and a diamond srh320a antenna since it has 22 reviews with a 4.9/5.0 score

Some repeaters are off grid. All traffic on repeaters yields to emergency traffic during a disaster. Consult RACES or ARES for emergency radio comms.

How do you like the FT7900's? I'm considering the step up to a mobile unit from my HT and that's on my list of units to go look at.

CB Radios and FRS radios are so much better than HAM radios!.... What junk.

LOL... just joking. I could see all the HAMs out there getting all pissed off.

I love HAM radio. VX-7R, and beat to hell, and working great.

I can't stand IRLP and Echolink is NOT ham radio. It's just like another AOL internet chat room.

HF is where all the fun is at. I do use some repeaters while commuting, but they are boring for me personally.

got my 857D, neat radio.. going to take my test maybe this weekend at pacific con but I dont think im ready yet, not enough studying.

TPT, you surely have alot of $ invested in radios. How do you like the 857D? im still new to it.

I like my vx8r, always liked the Kenwood F6 though since it has a bigger battery and seems to be just the same as the 8r.

Yes echolink is not true ham but it is a neat feature to have on my Sprint Evo cell phone running droid and its free.

Darklyte, You are going to LOVE THE 857d. I love mine so much, I bought a second one from a friend. The 857's are my primary "portable" radios I use when out in remote parts of the U.S. I try to use minimal power when out in remote areas by myself or with a fellow gun-nut/ham-buddy.

Good luck when you take your test. You'll find that ham radio is a really cool hobbie that also has many practical benefits. For one, you have a form of communications that can help you when cell phones don't work. One example is like in the valley floor of Death Valley. Up until about two weeks ago, there was NO radio repeaters or cell phones that would work out there. With an HF ham radio, you can get out and call for help if needed.

Two weeks ago, some friends of mine installed a 6 meter repeater east of Independence at 9000'. It's great because it's coverage now covers almost all of the eastern Sierras and the valley floor in Death Valley national park. Cell phones can't do that!!!!

Let me know when you pass your test and if you ever need some advice, shoot me a PM anytime. I may not know the answer, but I can direct you to it.

In case you haven't seen it, qrz.com is THE website for amateur radio folks. EVERYONE in ham radio hangs out there. ...Everyone.

Last but not least, don't ever be surprised by very rude ham radio folks on some websites. For some reason, there is a minority in ham radio that believe they are "better than everyone else." There is a certain "rude" factor with some licensed hams and best advice I can give you, is to ignore them and don't fall into their miserable lives. You'll see as you get deeper into the hobbie and explore certain ham website forums.

Take care.
