Yes.
The tang is less than 3/16" thick steel and about 3/4" wide in the stressed area while the aluminum is around 1.25" wide with an inch or more of cross section. The aluminum section is considerably stronger than the thin steel section.

If anything (chassis OR action) is deflecting during the tightening of the action into the chassis, that's proof that the chassis is under stress that it should not be under.

This puts the whole receiver into a slight banana shape. As the reciever is going from straight to banana, the barrel acts as a pointer and starts deflecting because the barrel is anchored to the front of the reciever.

Resale is effected because you need to grind out the bedding and re-do it if you want to swap receivers. That's extra work that you would not have to do had the chassis not been bedded. Damage COULD occur during the removal of the old bedding. Any damage that occurred would likely just be cosmetic and would disappear under the new bedding though.

I still do not understand the fascination with chassis-style stocks. They are heavier and more expensive than traditional stocks, and like another thread has covered, STILL REQUIRE BEDDING. OP, MDT is giving you the runaround, you need to, at the very least, skim bed your action to the chassis. As AR15 Barrels said, bedding will only help your rifle (if done correctly).

I do not like chassis’s but I own/run 3 of them...there is no comparing an MPA chassis to a stock when you start looking at the features and functions...If they are to heavy for you maybe it’s time to hit the gym...my comp rifle weighs in at just under 20lbs I have no problem running stages.

Maybe I don't understand because I just woke up and I'm still sleepy...
Aren't things suppose to move when you adjust the action screws? Is this just a solution to loose action screws? Or are you guys getting barrel deflection with proper screw torque? Saying, "I loosened my stuff, and now it moves, so I should bed my action." Is what I'm getting from this. Sorry, I'm slow...

When we talk about loosening/tightening the screws to check for movement, we are talking about testing for movement from about 1 inch-pound of torque up to max torque which would be around 35-60 inch-pounds depending on the screw head. We are NOT talking about movement that would occur when the screw is completely loose or removed and there is no torque present.

This is just a few of the things an MPA chassis will do outta the box that your traditional stock will not do...can you add stuff to make it close? Maybe....but then there’s the extra cost and weight. Last edited by longrange1; 05-02-2019 at 4:55 PM.. |

He comments about how heavy chassis stocks are. How much heavier are they compared to McMillan or Manners stocks? Those two manufacturers certainly aren't lightweight either, especially if you have adjustable buttstocks and cheek risers. Unless he's talking about plain-jane B&C or H-S stocks which can be lighter.

BTW of the 4 images I saw, the weight system, the Castle Cut and not shown, the vertical grip with grip interchangeability, are fairly hard to duplicate on a stock if that is what you are after. Some places like RO, dictate mag changes on the clock, I just wrote the COF for our match and we have stations were the mag must be inserted on the clock. Other places like a roof top also can take advantage of the castle cut. That said, I run both stocks and chasis.. Plenty of guys and ladies (Regina) winning with and without a castle cut. But at the end of the day it is about options at a price point. A typical high end bedded Manners or McMillian, with top notch bottom medal and Arca rail is going to 1/3 more 1K vrs about $1500

Randall, If a full bedding is to be applied how much bedding front of the recoil lug for a varmint barrel chambered in a 30 caliber magnum? Is it better to omit bedding supporting the barrel just in front of the lug for a full free float or have at least an inch to support long barrels 24-30”?

Yes, your comment about hitting the gym seemed to be directed towards me in a negative, and frankly, my feelings were hurt. I'll need to go home and see which bottom metal I have on my short action, but it has a similar cut out on my long action . Besides, even with my .223 trainer, the mags all stick out enough that I have never needed more to reload. Quote:

While cost is a different factor, I have seen chassis that cost significantly more than stocks, but what is adding the cost are add-ons and accessories, such as Arca rails. And while weight could potentially help recoil, there's gotta be a limitation to that. I mean, if that was the case, then why not flop around a F-Class rifle? Why stop at the 20 lb rifle? I've heard of matches that have stuck weight limits on rifles because of this, no? Jerry

Bedding a chassis gun
Quote:
Most positional matches do not have restricted weight classes; the time, move and in some cases, the hiking kinda takes care of that. Ironically, F-class does.. Either way some guys like one or the other, I don’t see why the hate on either one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

What's hard to understand about that? They make space for you to bed it if you want, but it's not needed to be plenty accurate as is.

first that is NOT a dope card its the powder head for the magneto speed...i use a wrist coach for dopes. second there are NO weight restrictions in the type of shooting i do and recoil management is key and a heavy gun equals an easier to manage gun especially when shooting off props...guys are running 25+ lb guns so my gun is actually not that heavy. also as i stated i do not really like chassis's but the MPA is so versatile that you just can not beat them as far as function goes. and my comment was not directed at YOU just a random comment. as far as a chassis NEEDING to be bedded to be accurate...thats wrong!! the first pic is my 6BR new barrel 10 different charge weights from 29.1g to 30.9. in .2g increments 2nd pic is my 6BRX 6 rounds off a bipod and rear bag the rest are off a bipod and my hand as rear support. heres a group at 750yds....all of these groups were shot from a BRX and or a BR and all from UNBEDDED MPA chassis's...also just a couple of weeks ago i shot a 1.5" 3 shot group on an 850yd coyote from a standing position leaning over a bench....and no im not bragging or trying to one up anyone im just saying that some chassis's do not need to be bedded to be accurate.

I still don't think it NEEDS to be done to be accurate, but it will HELP make the rifle more accurate. If done correctly, it wouldn't make accuracy worse, only improve. Do all rifles need it, or would all shooters notice a difference? No, most likely not. But if the OP's action is moving that much in the chassis without bedding, are you saying it would not benefit from bedding? Jerry

I will admit needing to "hit the gym" if I were to use my F-T/R rifle in Precision Rifle events. Trying to move, acquire, and hit targets under time constraints with a 17-1/2 lb rifle ain't gonna happen with my skinny arms...

Everyone needs to remember the chassis in question by OP and in other recent threads are at the bottom of the chassis price spectrum. Yeah, they won't shoot like a Manners or a McMillan out of the box but they're going to be better than a plastic stock that comes on a $400 rifle.

I’ve also seen the MDT chassis shoot great and not have the issue the OP is having...he got a Fd up chassis. I do agree with you 100% that you get what you pay for though...there’s a reason the XLR and MPAs cost what they do. |

Basically, nothing can be said about one specific chassis and expect it to be true of others. Same goes for stocks.
