Box ammo recommendation for R700 SPS 20in. 308
Looking to stock up on some match grade precision ammo for my R700 SPS 20in 1:12 308. Aside from FGMM 168gr what else should I consider? I currently don't have any immediate plans to load my own yet. For now I just want to stay with factory box ammo. My budget is limited so nothing crazy above $30/bx would be appreciated thanks.

They should be.I was told if I wanted something from out of state, they would receive it for no charge.

You might consider testing one box at a time rather than commit to a full case.
It was so interesting for me to note how differently my rifle shot with different manufactured brands and projectile weights. Many of the major manufacturers offer premier grades of ammunitions such as Nosler, Hornady, PPU, Olympic, Federa, Black Hills among others |

Thanks, but yours is a 24in 5R barrel with 1:11.25 twist. Would it run the same in my barrel?

MOst likely ,yes! The only difference being a(approximate) 200ft fps less do to barrel length.

I thought about trying 175 SMK but shyed away from it thinking its too heavy for my 1:12 twist to stabilize. Thanks for that.

Believe it or not,a 1:12 will work with just about anything between,125gr-180gr.Alot of depends on the bearing surface.

I tried Hornady 155 ELD and it didn't work for me. Hornady has so many different flavors its difficult to choose. Any particular Hornady ammo I should consider? I'm just looking to shoot steel consistently out to 600yds. Not into punching paper but would like it to group well to assure consistency at long range.

Hornady 168 AMAX and Hornady 178 BTHP (not superperfomance) is what I'll look at though the 178 might be expensive I think? It's been a bit since I last checked prices on those.
Also try shooting the cheaper plinking rounds. Who knows, maybe your rifle might like them more |

FGMM goes on sale with great prices by the case. It's also really consistent from lot to lot. |

If you do about 5 mins of google searching you’ll find tons of info out there that the 175 SMK shoots just fine from a 1:12 twist. Your not doing thing any different than a thousand other people did before you, over the last 5-10 years. |

None of my 308's like FGMM at all.
They all shot cheap PMC 150 grain hunting ammo much better. If it was my gun I would buy a single box of as many different choices as you can and stock up on whatever your gun likes best. I have shot 190 gr Sierra MatchKing bullets out of 13.0 13.25 and 13.5 twist barrels so you are good to go on the twist.

Whenever I can't stand the reliability & accuracy of using FGMM in my 700 at distant paper targets I go straight to the bottom of the barrel
and use GI issue M118LR. Sometimes we just have to make sacrifices. Humor. Listen to smoothy8500 post #18. It is very true that some shooters have legitimate issues with FGMM. Every rifle is a bit different. I wouldn't want to compare standard US issue M80 ammo with ZQI. Last edited by hambam105; 03-10-2019 at 11:17 AM.. |

Heh, back when I used to shoot a lot of .308, FGMM didn't work well in either my Winchester Model 70 or my M1A. What shot much better was M118 (not LR). Which I don't want to shoot too much of because it's unfindable now and my stash is not huge.
I guess if I ever run across the LR I should load up on as much as I can. Luckily I live near two military bases so stuff like that ends up at local gun shows sometime. |

My M21 likes the 155 Palmas better than the 168 SMKs for sure. For subbys ammo question, I always had good luck with ordering from HSM. |

Shouldn't be a problem. My SPS Varmint 26" 1-12") shot the 175SMK quite well.

I have a Remington 700 AAC and stocked up on FGMM 168gr Match .308 ammo years ago.
But then decided didn't want to keep spending $1/round on thousands of rounds so started buying the Prvi Partizan PPU 168gr Match .308-- forget what I paid for it, but definitely much cheaper than the FGMM and shoots just as good out of my rifle. |

Picked up a case of 7.62x51 FGMM 175gr. The brass on this looks heat treated and rough like NATO brass is it supposed to be this way? I checked my other case of .308 168gr FGMM and its clean and shiny.

The heat treat is because the brass has been annealed. Could be better. Reloaders like it.

So Federal does this for all 7.62x51 brass even if its not going to be loaded with M80 ball? Edit: silly me found my answer from SG Ammo. I was wondering if I got ripped off. Now I know. All is well.

I used to stock up on that when it was $15 a box and the PRIVI Match 168 was a few bucks cheaper. Other than that M80 stuff that wasn't any cheaper than the PRIVI Match. S&B and Federal I think.

Bergers, especially in 185gr can be finicky in relation to jump or twist rates. I would say only buy one box to test before committing.

And a factory barrel will have a TON of jump so you need a specifically jump tolerant bullet like a 168 SMK to have the best chance of good accuracy.

If he's got a factory Rem chamber, he's going to have a bunch of jump no matter what ammo he buys. I think I ended up loading 175SMKs at 2.970 (way, way longer than mag length, and not much bearing surface in the case neck), and was still well short of the lands.
That said, the SMKs in any weight worked acceptably well, as did the 168 and 178 AMAX's. Fiocchi 150gn FMJ stuff also shot well before the range I go to nixed FMJ rifle ammo. I didn't have much luck with Bergers, but also didn't try too hard. I could not get Tipped Matchkings to shoot at all. All moot now, as the rifle has a new barrel. |

My 20" R700 AAC-SD shoots FGMM 175gr much better than 168gr. I also used to handload 168gr, 175gr and A-Max and 175gr SMK projectiles were still best. YMMV.

Called two local shops who may have it. (No, I didn't call Turners). Both didn't have nor heard of it. One says they can order it and the price is $34.99 It seems like a lot of trouble just to try something that may not have a chance to work out. What is the expected MOA out of a factory Rem 700 barrel given its long throat?
