Default The waiting game.

Just finished all the initial wipedown on the first ever bedding job. Now I wait to see how I did. I feel like it’s going to be solid, but may be a bit ugly. Nervous as hell right now. I’ll post back in about 8 when I see if she’ll pop.

Lessons learned. Don’t spare the release agent. ( little scared on this one)

It won’t take as much bedding as you think. (I got squish out all the way around. Plus some. )
So at least I know it’s fully bedded, just probably going to be quite a bit of cleanup.

I want to thank everyone for tips and info. Feel like I went after it with a good plan. Time will tell.

Depending on the product used for bedding, after about 1-2 hours it becomes somewhat stiff like taffy. At this point, I'll clean up the excess with a sharp popsicle stick or razor if necessary.

Yeah, the first time is always nerve-racking. After getting experience and moving on to Garands and M14's, bolt actions are pretty straight forward.

Thanks for the info, and vote of confidence smoothly. I used about a half a box of a-tips getting everything I could see cleaned up. I think my prep was pretty good. But yes, I’m ready to start drinking!!! Figure I’ll give it 5-6 and pop it, and do a little cleanup in stock, and the action real well. I’ve read 5-8 then pop and trim excess. I used brownells Acraglas Gel.

Was there a problem with the chassis? I'm sure MDT would have replaced it if there was a defect that prevented it from fitting to the action properly...

MDT told me not to bed, as was not needed. But if I snugged the front bolt, as I brought the back down, the barrel would walk about 3/16 away from the chassis. That told me that something wasn’t quite right. They said it was normal. I didn’t trust that it wouldn’t be warping the action, so I decided to bed it. This is to be my first foray into long range, so I just figured I’d give my self every chance at accuracy as possible. I’ve read stories of others with similar issues, that gained their accuracy back after bedding a MDT. Just hoping it all works out, as between chassis and stock, I dropped a grand.

Those pictures are a little small.

Hope it turns out well.

So the back is super thin, and the front gets thicker toward the lug. The lug was wrapped on sides, so I know I have proper clearance. Popped right out, with minimal cleanup. Not super pretty, but seems like a solid job. I’m happy. Now onto the scope, and getting it lined up proper.

did you do any kind of prep work to the surface of chassis before bedding? and what did you use to bed it?

Even a skim bed needs something to mechanically lock into unless the caliber is not much in recoil department.

Looking at one of the pics, it appears the tang was rubbing the chassis. Does it seem like the bedding relieved the issue?

Tang is clear of the chassis, about the thickness of a razor blade wrapper. Action is completely stabilized in the chassis. It’s not super pretty, but I’m happy and confident in the work.
