Anybody carry a blade when they were younger?
Went to High School in Southern California in the mid to late seventies. Demographics were basically white middle-class, white working-class and also Hispanic working-class. The Casa Blanca area of Riverside was just a few blocks from school and subsequently we had a number of gang bangers who attended. Those guys were bad news and used to walk around campus four or five abreast and dare anyone to cross them or break their formation. One day during lunch about ten of them beat the s*#t out of three of my white friends. There was a large Caucasian student reaction and the police were called.
After that I began carrying a Buck 112 concealed. Back then you wouldn't get expelled for carrying a knife like you would today. Thank god I never got myself in trouble with it. Funny looking back on it now because I am a bespectacled professional who is near retirement. I don't have rock star long hair anymore either. Last edited by Mojaveman; 07-26-2021 at 9:38 PM.. |

12 for me. I feel naked without a clipped folding pocket knife.

Grade school always had a Barlow folder.
Buck 110 for a very long time. Swiss Army Ranger was always in my pocket until I lost it. Been carrying a Benchmade I bought from a calgunner for the last 10 years (I think it's been that long). When the epeen needs buffing a Cold Steel Black Bear Classic. |

First knife I had was a a swiss army, got it in 3rd grade. I've carried it or another EDC knife every day since. I went to high school in the 2000s, so it was probably borderline expulsion material in my time, but I never needed it, so it never came out.

Is there a statute of limitations for things we may have done in our youth during the 1960s and 1970s?
I'm careful about admitting to things because my grandkids read this site and I don't want them doing a bunch of the stuff grandpa might have done at their age.

I had that same knife when I was around 8-9 years old, except my handles were blue, designating Cub Scout. I saw it at my parents' house about 20 years ago and decided to leave it there for safekeeping. My parents have passed on, and I have no idea where my knife ended.

Swiss Army Knife, Case, Gerber Mark 2, Buck Gent all bought by my Dad and given to me during my childhood.
I still remember them all.

I almost lost one that way. When they told me that I would not get it back (I hadn't given it to them yet) I got out of line, walked to one of the shops in the airport, bought an envelope and some stamps and mailed it to my house.

When I was in grade 6, my uncle gave me a shotgun for my birthday.
One string attacked- I had to always carry a pocketknife I recall in high school we needed a screwdriver for adjusting a lane line in the swimming pool. I produced a knife and used that and then put the knife away... as I was doing this in from of a coach and teach, I though I would be expelled. They said nothing and life went on.... I know fear for my nieces and nephews... Would they get into college if they had been expelled for having a knife on campus?

Not sure how old I was when my Grandfather gave me an Imperial folding knife. Carried that into my 20's when I loaned it to a friend who returned it with a broken blade. He did buy me a new one. I have carried a wide variety of all sizes since and have found a cheap Big Five Humvee assisted opening to meet my everyday needs. I have bags of knifes of all types, so when the current one bites the dust or gets lost I have plenty to choose from to replace it.

I can remember carrying mine on the plane. It just went in the tub with the lose change and they handed it back to you.

About the same for me, my grandparents gave me a little 2-blade Swiss Army knife. Still have it, still reminds me of them. Carried it for the next 20 years or so, until I got into larger folders.

My first knife, I found.
Three-blade Old Timer. That was Jr High. I have had a knife or 3 on me ever since. Currently EDC a Fox karambit and a little Gerber folder. My EDC pack has a few more fixed blades, up to a Cold Steel machette. Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |

I started to carry in middle school daily with a lockback bought at a swap meet. It died and I moved on to a buck 110 carried in my pocket. I WAS happy to see you btw.
Then on to Gerber Bolt Action folder, and since I pick from the 30ish pocket knives for the day. When I go on vacation now and have to take a plane I feel naked without a knife the whole time. Always at Orange awareness levels. |

I lost two that way. Lol. You forget you have one. The Sherriff (or whatever he was) felt so bad, I tried to give it to him.

Carried a three blade buck in high school.
Early eighties. We also played KAOS with dart guns.. Killing As Organized Sport We made sure to use the toy dart guns that were not black. Nobody cared about our stupid game.

I think I got my first pocket knife from my Grandfather when I was eight or nine, I can't recall for sure. I remember he had a well worn Scout knife he carried as long as I knew him. I've been carrying a pocket knife ever since.

I feel the same. The only time you'll find me with no knife in my pocket is when I'm in an airport, on an airplane or in certain government buildings. I don't know how folks go through life trying to open packages with their car keys? I will confess, my fascination with pocket knives has taken an expensive turn for the worse. I found internet knife forums many years ago and got introduced to hand made tactical folders and it's been all downhill ever since! |
