However, if the guide has gone above and beyond my expectations, I give him an additional side tip.
I like this approach. I have no problem leaving a decent tip for those that basically earn their living by tips. This is a fully guided Antelope hunt for both my daughter & I. We are both looking to learn & have a good hunt experience!
I have only hunted with 1 other outfitter. A partially guided hunt (bears over bait). Myself and a couple others were assigned to a ‘newer’ guide, as we had hunting experience. There were plenty at the lodge that didn’t, or did not exhibit that they did. I had no hunt related interaction with the main/lead guide.

That's actually worse. Now you're asking someone else to decide where your tip money goes. If you want to tip someone, tip them directly.

What if sometime was really helpful, but the owners wife doesn't think they deserve a tip?

Let's say you give a tip to the owners wife, to be split among whomever she thinks deserves it. Bill, a junior guide was especially helpful.

But unbeknownst to you, the owners wife and Bill are having a torrid love affair. I'm talking teenagers in the back of a 62 Plymouth, torrid.

But lately Bill had been paying attention to Consuela, the new hot young Latina camp cook. Is it fair to Bill if the owner's wife stiffs him on a tip, because he wants to stiff Consuela?

I tip between 10-20% for guides and staff the actual amount is entirely dependent on effort and attitude. I rarely tip the owner as a guide unless I feel that we got something extra or the go above and beyond expectations for the situation or hunting conditions.

At least 10% for a basic tip. American guides always want more but it also costs more fuel/equipment wise. In other parts of the world 10% is alot of money to most guides. Other countries also like Americans because they do tip whereas alot of Europeans do not. I also ask my guides if they need gear like headlamps, knives ,batteries etc which i really dont need on my flight back home.
Last hunt i did we tipped the cook, guides , manager and the lady who organized the hunt/travel plans. She ended up giving us 10% of our hunt!
Next time we go back you can bet the guys are going to bust their asses off to get us on trophy animals

Yeah big joke on everyone! Like you are the only person that knows he's trolling. And when that great and terrible day comes that we all realize we are being trolled by YSR it's really going to upset some apple carts! We're really going to have to take a long hard look at our lives and how we could be so gullible all these years... Serious stuff this is!

Give me a break.

Whether someone realizes they’re being trolled or not, reacting to a trolling is still biting the bait. That’s part of his point. The Pavlovian response was a good descriptor.

I am pretty entertained by Ysr.

Somehow I imagine ysr-racer using this as his main fishing equipment, since the price is right...

I'm pretty sure he's asking a real question (what's a reasonable fishing guide tip) while trolling for entertainment at the same time, at least that's how I've always taken it. Dunno, maybe I'm in the dark.

You’re tracking like a Javelin. Except the part about him asking the question. This time it wasn’t him.

I was referring to this post in my previous comment. In fact, YSR doesn't even need to post the question. People are so conditioned, they even respond if someone else asks a legitimate, but similar question. Once the ball is rolling, others can't resist chiming in and the OP's thread gets hijacked. You would think folks would get tired of repeating themselves every time the guy's name comes up.

Haha yep, it appears that simply giving your guide a $100 bill or two is way too simple.

So if I'm going fishing in Alaska, and it costs 7 grand for the two of us, am I supposed to tip the pilot, the camp hand, the chef, and the guide?

All 10 percent each? That's like 50 percent !!

Now my 7 grand trip just turned into a 14 grand trip.

Of course, the same way you tip the hostess, the busboy, the cook, the waiter, the bartender, and the guy that sprays for bugs at your favorite restaurant. A $100 meal always ends up costing me closer to $250.

7k tip on a 7k base fare is 100% tip, not 50%. A 50% tip on $7k is $3500 for a total of $10,500.

Also, you listed 4 hired hands, not 5, so your total would be $9800 if you tipped each person 10% of 7000. (1+0.1+0.1+0.1+0.1)*7000=9800.

I math much.

“My 7 grand trip turned into 14 grand.”

... that’s not how it works.

33% more of a $1 bill is $1.33, but 33% of $1.33 is not $0.33... see how that works? Syntax is important. They teach that in 2nd grade with PEMDAS.

Keep this thread going. This place is boring.
