Straw bails for a backstop?
Would a straw bail be an effective projectile catch for a FA .177 steel BB firing up to 450FPS? I hear Santa is brining some BB machine guns down the chimney.

Yes, if you have access to some stretch wrap the straw bales will hold up better if it rains or being moved around. If you are worried about a BB/Pellet sneaking through put a 1/2''-3/4'' piece of plywood on the backside, sounds like a fun Xmas.
I should mention that Alfalfa bales are more condensed than straw bales, check them out at a local feed store.

Catch or backstop? If it is kids shooting, they might shoot over the bales, so what's behind the target could potentially be a concern for inexperienced kids or adults for that matter.
Maybe add a 3/4 inch plywood sheet right behind the bales and angled down at 45 degrees or less to direct any that get through the bale into the ground. Still, what's beyond should still be thought through.

The target location is backed by a 40' hill behind the target area.
I know from experience, bad experience, that plywood does not hold up, especially with well placed shots. (2 layers or plywood and a wooden fence) These BB guns are full auto with a published cyclic rate of 1400 RPM. My concern is the occasional rock or tree that may ricochet and reducing that hazard. I think the biggest problem will be me letting the kids shoot them

As a kid I built many backstops for bbs and pellets. Take a cardboard box the size you want and line the back with a couple inches of phonebooks or newspapers. Then fill the rest of the front with crumpled newspapers so the backstop is held in place. Done.

Day Camp was held on PRIVATE property. We MIGHT'VE had a non-standard item or two out there amongst the staff...

Take your straw bales and a couple of ratcheting tie down straps. Wrap the bale with the two straps longwise and compress the bale down. While it's fully compressed, untie the baling strings, and re-tie them to the size of the now compressed bale. Release the straps and voila! you have a bale tight enough for both high power archery and mid power bb/pellet guns. I would not use this method with any pre-charged pneumo guns, but for your average pump up, break-barrel, or lever spring bb or standard CO2 gun, it will hold up well.

No problems catching .22s out of an MRod. Tape up the holes at the end of your session and call it done. |

While an older thread I wanted to mention I saw a pretty cool homemade BB/Pellet catcher. It takes one bag of rubber mulch (6-7.00 at Home Depot), A five gallon bucket, and a circle cut cardboard the size of the bucket mouth.
Put the mulch in the bucket, cut the circle push the cardboard circle into the bucket to keep the mulch from moving too much and there you go. |

The most effective method is to redirect energy instead of trying to absorb or stop it. Even airsoft on full auto will degrade something like carpet used as a backstop to the point it becomes less or even ineffective. BB and pellets will easily go through concrete blocks in short time on full auto.
Use whatever you like as the target support but just put a sloping redirect behind it to send the projectiles to soft earth. A slanted backdrop that redirects the energy will far outlast anything else that tries to stop it and do it with less mess and hassle. I've used everything from plywood to cement board and as long as the angle is right it outlasts anything else that is vertical. A 3/8" thick inch piece of plywood at an angle will outlast a 3/4" piece of plywood sitting vertical. A 4x8 sheet fits into the bed of the truck. If I'm worried about higher power stuff like primer powered wax, foam or delrin I just throw some dirt on the reverse side, nothing is getting through even over a full weekend of fun. If I use PCP or anything with pellets then the same precautions as firearms are needed because it takes only one to end it all. |

Short answer - yes. A straw bale will stop most all bb guns and pellet guns.
Longer answer - be careful of how you dispose of them later if you ever use lead pellets or bbs in them. I usually let my chickens have their way with the straw bales after arrows start poking out the back. I use rolled carpet in front of the bales to stop pellets so that they don't eat them. Occasionally one makes it into the straw but it's pretty rare. |

I used straw bales before building a trap with mulch as a backstop. The bales I had were the smaller Michael's arts and craft-type. Even still, they worked great for catching bb's and pellets for softer shooting (up to 550 fps) air guns in .117. But not so much for larger calibers or harder hitting guns.

Great portable and silent trap is a electrical box, line the back with duct seal,, on the front use a clipboard with center rectangle cut out to clip targets on.
OR.... I have this, and custom stained and varnished it.. http://www.archerairguns.info/2012/0...g-to-mind.html They stopped selling them, but you get the idea, a box with a clipboard and electrical seal. Last edited by ERdept; 05-26-2021 at 10:13 PM.. |
