Default Motorcyle trip / gun

I Would like to take my 44 mag with me to shoot stuff on a motorcycle camping trip. I have an old shovel head chopper. No saddle bags. If I locked my pistol in a hard case in my bag (strapped to my bike) is that legal?

If the amo is in the same bag but not in the locked case with the gun would that be legal? Or would need to be in a separate container or bag?

Basically I have a large duffle bag on the back of the bike and a handle bar bag (about big enough for a six pack for reference).. both could be locked with travel padlocks .That’s about the existent of the storage options.

Locked in a hard case would be legal. Ammo in the same bag, but not in the case with the gun would also be legal, but I would put it in the other bag and lock the bags just out of an abundance of caution.

Your GTG, I don't know why you couldn't legally keep the ammo in the same locked container as the gun. Not in the cylinder but in the same container.

FUD from eric ammo may be in same locked case as firearm just not loaded in firearm. To be safe put ammo outside locked case containing firearm.but not mandatory.

Pelican cases are nice but this will work.

MTM Single Handgun Case for up to 6-Inch Revolver (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000H8ZWYE..._XSqTCb624R7VQ

I like combo locks so you don’t have to worry about losing or finding a key.

In which state or states will this camping trip take place? Different states have different laws. California allows the gun and ammunition in the same lock box. You just cannot have any ammunition inside the gun.

That is your first problem..

Transporting in a old shovel head !

You need an original Knucklehead and everything will be forgiven !

If you read Eric's answer carefully you will see that it is correct.
Yes, you can have ammo in the same container as the gun, but that was something left out, what he wrote was "but not in the case with the gun would also be legal".

Now not every cop knows about Clark vs California, especially old timers who follow Federal law which says guns and ammo have to be in separate containers.
To avoid a possible hassle many do not keep ammo in the same case as the gun.
(The Clark case resulted in ammo in case with gun is not a "loaded weapon", it is legal to transport this way).

FUD is Fear, Uncertainty and Despair, I don't think that Erlc's reply rises to that level.

The question was if it would be legal to transport the ammo in the same bag but not in the locked case. The answer is yes, so I fail to see where any details are wrong. I guess one of us has to work on reading comprehension, the real question is which?

not meaning to get off the subject but what year shuv?
Now back on topic, I have no bags (except the RK), when on the shovel, I packed a .380, both in same bag and one lock, the tool bag had separate pockets. I used a lock with four numbers 1 through 9 on the dials, I had 3 numbers dialed in and only clicked one number for a fast open, but since I got a ccw permit no issues about locking up

Locked container could be a nylon or canvas pistol case with locked zipper.

I want a pan, bunch of my friends got them before the prices exploded. but I’d have to sell everything I own to buy one. Much less a knucklehead.

I wish I had a chase truck. Usually it’s just me headed out to where ever my friends are camping.

No need to call names. I’m not looking for a legal defense for court. I’m looking to avoid that part by not getting hassled by the cops in the first place.

Then you should drive the truck to the camping trip, not the old chopper

It seems like the shovel is what everyone is using these days to build choppers. It's just too much $$$ to do knuckles and panheads anymore. I prefer an evo, especially over the stupid hybrid engine I'm running now

Enjoy your trip........... if I was 20 years younger

Rio Hondo is teaching POST candidates that ammo must be transported outside the locked container.

The FUD will continue.

You donít need to separate ammo from the gun. If your hard case was locked, mags and ammo out of the gun in a box and for redundancy not loaded in the mag your good. The hard case on a bike would be considered the trunk it can be in the same case if locked.

Apparently even shovel heads are getting kinda rare. Now everyone is chopping evos. I was born in 80. All the old gnarly guys had shovels when I was a kid. My neighbor built choppers. Itís just the bike I identified with. Had newer fancier bikes but I love this thing.

I grew up in the hippy chopper era and always thought I'd build one. For now I'm enjoying my adventure bike which is a lot better for getting to remote camping spots!

Guns for moto camping need to be light weight and compact. The Glock 19 does just fine in this role.
