No pigs in SD County AFAIK. You're going to have to drive out to Riverside County for them.
Turkey, mule deer, bighorn sheep, quail, and dove are available to hunt in SD County for certain. If you go out to the farmlands in Imperial County, there's more quail and dove out there, maybe duck(?). Tons of lakes for fishing. El Capitan Reservoir and Otay Lake are my two favorite state license lakes. Santee Lake and Lake Poway for locally owned 'non state license requirement' lakes are cool to relax casually at with family, with Santee is more family park style and Lake Poway being more lake-y with available hike trails and a park to grill. Dixon Lake is also a spot, but I prefer the other local city owned lakes. Shore fishing, take it up anywhere in Mission bay, or the piers on Ocean Beach Pier and Pacific Beach Pier. Even Embarcadero Park Pier is good for fishing and Shelter Island Pier. I'm typing out full names for you to search I don't have a boat, but you can see the map of San Diego and go from there. Outdoor ranges include Pala, Camp Pendleton(never been here), and Southbay Rod and Gun Club. I believe BLM land is under fire restriction, so no open shooting. Indoor ranges, you can search them up. Probably not gonna hunt down there. Turkey, quail, deer I have covered. More curious about ocean fishing. Last edited by taperxz; 08-03-2021 at 8:39 PM.. |

Usually sand bass and spotted bay bass are the commoners. You have a chance at calico bass on the pier. Halibut is a possibility, but I've never caught one. I like fishing for mackerel on Shelter Island pier. They swarm. https://sdfish.com/fish/ Check that site out. |

Lobster is a great catch. If you got the cash to blow on a boat, then ocean fishing opens up for you. |

I already own a horse. Why the Fxxx would I buy a boat? I’ll look at charters I guess. Only going down there once every two months or so. A boat would be a bit much.

Fishing is great in San Diego. The SD charter fleet is hard to beat value wise. I'm headed there in a few weeks to chase tuna.

H&M Landing had some killer charter boats way back when I was there. Don't know about their current status, but they would be worth checking out...... and cheaper than buying a boat. A lot less headache, too.

Basically, grab my gear and walk down. Up here we are doing this for stripped bass. |

It's really a preference thing. Fishing from shore is generally light tackle for smaller fish (perch, corbina, maybe a halibut) and much cheaper to do. Getting on the boats you have a shot at bigger fish: tuna, yellowtail, dorado etc. but you will have to shell out cash on the trip, galley tab, fish cleaning, and tip.

San Diego is world renown for their live bait style sportfishing,
be a shame to not get some if it's handy like that. https://www.searchersportfishing.com/

I'd focus on fishing. Although, there is world-class dove hunting if you head inland for a couple of hours.

Stuff you wanna toss back into the sea foam. I’d never eat fish caught off of local and heavily populated surf coastlines, especially “mission DECAY.”

Hunting out here is probably one of the hardest to figure out since it's so vast and basically desert terrain. We hunt out of State but still give it a go locally when we can. You'll be traveling regardless and the nearest hunting is about an hour away. Closer if you can hunt private.
The fishing is the thing here.

They used to publish a map of the areas they suspected feral hogs were in up in the hills by Santa Ysabel and Julian but I can’t find it any more. I went up there once but got skunked. We hiked south from the Inaja Memorial Park parking but eventually got to a cliff and couldn’t find a route around. We saw some possible footprints and scat but no actual hogs. This was 8-10 years ago.
According to this article, they think professional hunters took a majority of them out in the county by 2016, at least to the point there isn’t a sustainable population any more https://www.latimes.com/local/califo...421-story.html |

Tape- Salton Sea for ducks. Less than 2 hours away. One of the most interesting and unique places you’ll ever shoot quackers.

I live 1 mile South of Windandsea Beach. When you get settled, send me a PM and we can meet for coffee. There are a couple of calgun members in this area.

Like Mike said, just focus on Saltwater, before you buy a boat and drive around and get skunked(remember 10 percent of the fisherman catch 90 percent of the fish) go out with a guide or take a cattle boat to get some tips and get put on fish. As for hunting, dove and quail. Deer hunting in Southern California is extremely unproductive due to habitat loss, mountain lion, poor habitat due to drought, mismanagement.

Water sports, hunting here on public land is hiking with a gun, unless you can get access to private land. Skip efforts on hinting in SD county and put that money towards a decent out of State hunt. The action is in the water sports here. I hear good spear fishing and boat fishing kelp beds right near wind and sea area.
